Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasn’t it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic “alt side of Tiktok” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, you’re wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”

Do you mind if I leave a headcanon here just to share it -

Personally, I’ve always believed that it wasn’t straight up using the Eye that killed Desmond, because I like to believe he has just enough Isu gene fuckery going on that the tech recognizes him as a user, ergo why it works for him at all. (Scripted Admin, the Eye created strictly for his DNA, and all that.) But I do believe that he died burning, specifically because the heat of the flare transferred through the shield that the Eye set up, into his hand.

So like, I think using Isu tech wasn’t what killed him, I think that what he had to use it for is what killed him. If that makes sense?

I think Desmond burned in place of the Earth. Taking the full brunt of the solar flare so that nothing else would be touched by it.

Bonus points if, after whichever resurrection/time travel thing we feel like doing, Desmond can still remember exactly what it was that killed him - not the tech, but the flare. Not the Eye, but the Sun.

How would he even begin to articulate that to anyone without coming across as an angel or a god or something else divine? “The Precursors of humanity foresaw the Sun lashing out with devastating flames, and set me up to burn in place of all the Earth. Also, the warning had to reach me across centuries which is why they devised an Architect to lay down my path for me in advance, a Prophet for me to receive a message from, and a Guide for me to follow to the place of my death.” Hello??

And yeah, I can totally see that. Kinda like the device absorbed the flare and everything connected to it and all that 'power' had to go elsewhere.

Desmond ends up being that 'somewhere' and he dies with the knowledge that, had things been different, had humanity been able to prepare for the Solar Flare in any meaningful way...

He could have survived.

Duh. We all know this. We love it. Well-trod ground.

But walk with me here…

Scott gets cute aggression over Kip. Majorly.

He’s still very gentle and sweet in practice… but my dude is about to start taking bites out of his boyfriend whom he adores and cannot humanly get enough of.

The restraint of this man cannot be overstated. Kip goes around without a dozen perfect imprints of Scott’s teeth around his body by dint of Scott Hunter’s sheer strength of will and the mushy gooeyness of his heart, because he doesn’t want to hurt Kip. He wants to devour him. He wants to cradle him so softly and make sure he never lands on anything uncomfortable a day in his life. He wants to give him everything he has and the very marrow in his bones. He wants to hug him and imprint the shape of Kip into his very skeleton so it can never be removed until he is long dead and his bones have turned to dust.

Scott Hunter has had nobody to pour out the contents of his heart on since he was twelve years old (or fourteen, depending on how sad you wanna’ make yourself about this). He’s like a reservoir that’s been collecting and collecting and collecting for too many years, his heart is like a dam about to burst all of its seals, but he’s trying so hard to hold it together and not unleash decades of love all at once and devastate everything and leave nothing unruined in the wake of his horrible destruction.

He doesn’t bite, he doesn’t grip too hard and bruise that beautiful skin. He keeps his hands soft, holds Kip reverently, controls himself, because he’s so, so afraid, and he has so, so much love beating against the bars on his heart to getoutgetoutgetout! Because Kip has to know… before Scott loses him, Kip has to know how important he is. How much he is beloved by Scott.

Because Scott loses people he loves. This is the constant in his life. Scott does not get family. Scott does not get a person for himself. Scott is alone and afraid of so many things.

Except… Scott connected with Kip.

And like a high-pressure leak, it’s going to get wider and wider and more intense, and Scott doesn’t want to scare Kip. He wants to be normal and sane and everything Kip deserves.

But Scott’s heart has been starved and dying for so many years now.

His heart cannot help but drive him a little insane when Kip is just sitting there in Scott’s life, content and present in the area he’s collecting in Scott’s home and his heart and his mind.

Kip is sitting on Scott’s couch reading a book, where he has spent so many quiet evenings alone… he just goes, pounce!

Kip is making himself at home in his kitchen, where nobody else has had a reason to nose around in his extremely neat cabinets… time to pick that man up and ravish him.

Kip is doing anything, anything normal at all, anything Normal Human Behavior in Scott’s house? Scott is .02 seconds away from jumping on him like an overexcited puppy whose tail is wagging the rest of him so hard his feet are skidding and he’s about to fall over.

It is aggressive.

However, Scott does have the self-control of well, himself, so he does not do these things nearly half as often as he wants to.

Oh, but he wants to.

The fun thing is he would understand why people were getting him outfits with storks on them. That’s a word, it’s his name, straightforward. All the humans get him the same gag gift, but like, they’re putting effort in at least. This is a genuinely nice outfit. Stork will be a walking zero-effort pun sometimes, rather than waste a perfectly fine robe.

It’s fine. This is a readily comprehensible human illogic. Exactly the kind of thing he expected from moving to Earth.

Six years in he finds out about the stork bringing babies.

Stork has a good long meditation session about this myth, his name, his job, the outfits, the whole shebang (or whatever Vulcan concept is the equivalent).

And he decides he’s honored by it, in a humanly illogical way.

The humans are asking him to do what is after all his job, and specifically requesting him for the joy his name brings them on top of an already agreeable and satisfying task. He has no objection to engendering positive emotions in others. Harm hastens the heat-death of the universe, Surak teaches, so happiness must logically slow it down. 

Plus, Vulcans of his generation love puns. There were two decades of punning competitions in colleges across the planet. So when he realizes that he is a walking zero-effort pun, and that the humans also love the pun, he is all for it. He is the Joe Cool of the entire Vulcan population in his city. 

And via this pun, the humans are including him in a cherished and traditional myth, by casting him as the literal bringer of life and the expander of families. 

There’s no downside. Stork wears his robes, pins, keychains, and other bird-related tchotchkes with genuine pride.

YES IT’S BACK ON MY DASH AT LAST

For real though working together with some human social workers, a Vulcan would be an excellent caretaker for children in an adoption center.

Child has a meltdown? Imagine Stork, perfectly calm and unbothered, approaching the kid and saying “You appear quite upset, Eliza. If you would please allow me to relocate you to the ‘bean-bag-chair,’ we can discuss the source of your distress.”

A Vulcan educated in medicine and child psychology would be endlessly patient with a kid with behavioral issues. Stork wouldn’t get or upset or frustrated. After all, these are children with medical and psychological conditions. It would be illogical to blame the child or to not treat them with the appropriate care.

Even if the a little one was having a bad day or was just overtired, Stork wouldn’t get angry. He might even be a calming presence. Any new kids acting out would learn real quick that they’d have better luck trying to arm-wrestle a Klingon than get a rise out of Stork.

Not only that, Vulcans live much longer than humans. Imagine Stork looking virtually unchanged as decades pass. Kids he’d helped years ago would turn up fully grown, maybe there to adopt their own kids, and run into Stork, looking almost exactly as they remember him.

And he’d probably remember them too. “Welcome back, Eliza.”
