Cover Reveal: WILD AND FULL OF MARVELS!

We are beyond thrilled to share the cover art that artist Jinx Inks has done for our next anthology, Wild and Full of Marvels: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Folklore and Fairy Tales.

This all-new collection, fourth in our Queer Fanworks Inspired By… series, features 23 stories, 23 art pieces, and a 10-page comic, all inspired by folklore, fairy tales, myths, and legends with personal significance to the creator. Teasers, excerpts, and trims of the art pieces will be shared throughout our Kickstarter campaign. Check out the contributor list and read their biographies!

hello i'm a historical fashion researcher and i have a lot of experience looking up things! this is a very widely experienced irritation and you're definitely not alone in this, but i am here to share everything i know!

so, ways to get around this:

turn off AI results. they're literally nonsense to us

don't use pinterest because the sources/provenance is often hard to trace

a standard internet search can be okay, but museum collections are the top tier (list of collections below this list)

instead of broad terms like victorian, regency, tudor, renaissance etc. try using the decade you're looking for. if you're not sure of what decade it is but have a vague image in your head, look on the fashion history timeline and just jump around until you find it. but even changing to e.g. 19th century will give better results than victorian

including terms like womenswear/menswear, daywear, formal wear, evening wear, court dress should increase the value of your search too

including "fashion plates" in your search can give you a nice impression of the intended silhouettes of the era. some of these might be a little stylised but will show you what was considered in vogue

for pre-fashion plate eras or things like makeup and styling, you'll have to look at portraiture or manuscripts. these are harder to actually find what you're looking for, but searching museum collections and limiting results to specific date ranges will be your friend

when looking at art, do bear in mind sometimes artists would paint fabric extra flow-y to show off their skills. it might not have been exactly like that in terms of fabric weight or drape. so, a pinch of salt required!

if you find something on image search where the provenance is dubious, reverse image search and you might find a source! i've been able to trace random pinterest images to real sources, but this does take a lot of time and effort and is often not worth the headache

some online resources and museum collections:

fashion history timeline is an invaluable resource if you're trying to get a feel for everything and should be your first port of call. it'll also link to good examples

the met has a vast number of extant examples of clothing, as well as fashion plates

costume institute fashion plates is a subcollection of the met for fashion plates (1800s-1922)

v&a also has many extant garments, fashion plates, and incredible articles on clothing and aesthetics. read the details of the objects because they'll often reveal a lot about the piece

lacma is good for C19th-20th pieces

nypl digital collection for photographs

national portrait gallery or similar for portraiture, or literally any museum in your country that has historical art

national museums scotland can be useful situationally but might be oddly specific

stout style history is a great collection for finding image references for fat people wearing historical clothes. survival bias of a lot of museum pieces tends towards smaller clothing that couldn't be repurposed, but this aims to counter that. it's not sortable, but is still a really nice resource

wikimedia commons is surprisingly handy! and the images, if you should need to link/repost them, are public domain

auction websites sound like a funny one to recommend. some won't have mannequins and some will. just look up historical garment auctions and you'll find some!

anyway, i hope this has been a good place to start for anyone interested! there are probably some i've missed because there are so many museums across the world and i don't know about all of them or can't remember them. but these are the ones i've used the most! (my specialisation/jobs i've had to research for have only really been in western fashion, so my resources reflect that)

If you click on a museum's article, the website is usually linked in the overview table.

HERE’S THE THING THOUGH

I used to work for a call center and I was doing a political survey and I called this number that was randomly generated for me and the way our system worked was voice-activated so when the other person said hello you’d get connected to them, so I just launch right into my “Harvard University and NPR blah blah blah” thing and then there’s this long pause and I think the person’s hung up even though I didn’t hear a click

And then I hear “you shouldn’t be able to call this number.”

So I apologize and go into the preset spiel about because we aren’t selling anything, etc. etc. and the answer I get is

“No, I know that. What I mean is that it should be impossible for you to call this number, and I need to know how you got it.”

I explain that it’s randomly generated and I’m very sorry for bothering him, and go to hang up. And before I can click terminate, I hear:

“Ma’am, this is a matter of national security.”

I accidentally called the director of the FBI.

My job got investigated because a computer randomly spit out a number to the Pentagon.

When I was in college I got a job working for a company that manages major air-travel data. It was a temp gig working their out of date system while they moved over to a new one, since my knowing MS Dos apparently made me qualified.

There was no MS Dos involved. Instead, there was a proprietary type-based OS and an actually-uses-transistors refrigerator-sized computer with switches I had to trip at certain times during the night as I watched the data flow from six pm to six AM on Fridays and weekends. If things got stuck, I reset the server. 

The company handled everything from low-end data (hotel and car reservations) to flight plans and tower information. I was weighed every time I came in to make sure it was me. Areas of the building had retina scanners on doors. 

During training. they took us through all the procedures. Including the procedures for the red phone. There was, literally, a red phone on the shelf above my desk. “This is a holdover from the cold war.” They said. “It isn’t going to come up, but here’s the deal. In case of nuclear war or other nation-wide disaster, the phone will ring. Pick up the phone, state your name and station, and await instructions. Do whatever you are told.”

So my third night there, it’s around 2am and there’s a ringing sound. 

I look up, slowly. The Red phone is ringing.

So I reach out, I pick up the phone. I give my name and station number. And I hear every station head in the building do the exact same. One after another, voices giving names and numbers. Then silence for the space of two breaths. Silence broken by…

“Uh… Is Shantavia there?”

It turns out that every toll free, 1-900 or priority number has a corresponding local number that it routs to at its actual destination. Some poor teenage girl was trying to dial a friend of hers, mixed up the numbers, and got the atomic attack alert line for a major air-travel corporation’s command center in the mid-west United States.

There’s another pause, and the guys over in the main data room are cracking up. The overnight site head is saying “I think you have the wrong number, ma’am.” and I’m standing there having faced the specter of nuclear annihilation before I was old enough to legally drink.

The red phone never rang again while I was there, so the people doing my training were only slightly wrong in their estimation of how often the doomsday phone would ring.

Every time I try to find this story, I end up having to search google with a variety of terms that I’m sure have gotten me flagged by some watchlist, so I’m reblogging it again where I swear I’ve reblogged it before.

But none of these stories even come close to the best one of them all; a wrong number is how the NORAD Santa Tracker got started.

Seriously, this is legit.

In December 1955, Sears decided to run a Santa hotline.  Here’s the ad they posted.

Only problem is, they misprinted the number.  And the number they printed?  It went straight through to fucking NORAD.  This was in the middle of the Cold War, when early warning radar was the only thing keeping nuclear annihilation at bay.  NORAD was the front line.

And it wasn’t just any number at NORAD.  Oh no no no.

Terri remembers her dad had two phones on his desk, including a red one. “Only a four-star general at the Pentagon and my dad had the number,” she says.

“This was the ‘50s, this was the Cold War, and he would have been the first one to know if there was an attack on the United States,” Rick says.

The red phone rang one day in December 1955, and Shoup answered it, Pam says. “And then there was a small voice that just asked, ‘Is this Santa Claus?’ ”

His children remember Shoup as straight-laced and disciplined, and he was annoyed and upset by the call and thought it was a joke — but then, Terri says, the little voice started crying.

“And Dad realized that it wasn’t a joke,” her sister says. “So he talked to him, ho-ho-ho’d and asked if he had been a good boy and, ‘May I talk to your mother?’ And the mother got on and said, ‘You haven’t seen the paper yet? There’s a phone number to call Santa. It’s in the Sears ad.’ Dad looked it up, and there it was, his red phone number. And they had children calling one after another, so he put a couple of airmen on the phones to act like Santa Claus.”

“It got to be a big joke at the command center. You know, ‘The old man’s really flipped his lid this time. We’re answering Santa calls,’ ” Terri says.

And then, it got better.

“The airmen had this big glass board with the United States on it and Canada, and when airplanes would come in they would track them,” Pam says.

“And Christmas Eve of 1955, when Dad walked in, there was a drawing of a sleigh with eight reindeer coming over the North Pole,” Rick says.

“Dad said, ‘What is that?’ They say, ‘Colonel, we’re sorry. We were just making a joke. Do you want us to take that down?’ Dad looked at it for a while, and next thing you know, Dad had called the radio station and had said, ‘This is the commander at the Combat Alert Center, and we have an unidentified flying object. Why, it looks like a sleigh.’ Well, the radio stations would call him like every hour and say, ‘Where’s Santa now?’ ” Terri says.

For real.

“And later in life he got letters from all over the world, people saying, ‘Thank you, Colonel,’ for having, you know, this sense of humor. And in his 90s, he would carry those letters around with him in a briefcase that had a lock on it like it was top-secret information,” she says. “You know, he was an important guy, but this is the thing he’s known for.”

“Yeah,” Rick [his son] says, “it’s probably the thing he was proudest of, too.”

So yeah.  I think that might be the best wrong number of all time.

Love that while online fandom in general is having a weird meltdown about the morality of enjoying anything darker than sanitized fluff in fiction, the Danny Phantom fandom is still sitting in the corner 16 years after the show ended with a blankie and cocoa and their 10,000th deep-fanon supertorture cannibalism vivisection psychological horror fic

Actually, I think it's important to know the Danny Phantom fandom did have a problem with what we would now call 'Antis', in 2007-2009. They were led by the owner and admin of a major fan forum, and her most frequent targets were anyone who shipped queer pairings. (This was primarily m/m fics, the trans!headcanons had yet to be a major thing and f/f and polyship fics were almost nonexistant.) She was at least casually supported in this cause by Butch Hartman, as she was also the admin for his official forums, and actively thought she was doing this to his wishes. (Likelyhood: 90%, BH is an ass. But I never saw proof he knew the extent she took it to.

The Phandom has survived in spite of all this, and Butch Hartman, and it's actively a part of why it still embraces all the 'darker' sides, because we learned.

Everyone who supported her left, after one too many arguments over it all.

Every time I see an anti-shipper, I raise my eyebrows. Because it didn't, with this woman, start with queer pairings - for her it started with adult/child pairings, and others. But it very quickly became -No, we can't let the kids ship Dash/Danny! We can't let them even *contemplate* Paulina/Sam! No, Danielle isn't trans, why would you think that?? We have to protect the kids, or else they'll think being queer is okay!

Modern Phandom will embrace your right to write anything you throw at them, because they've already seen where it ends - and they're here in spite of that.

For the record, my commentary above is the reason why that if you are a person who starts talking about 'problematic ships' and you're in my fandom spaces, I'm blocking you.

Especially if you find the 'ships' problematic but are A-okay with all levels of gore and violence towards the very same characters. Sure, Jan.

This started off as tags but, you know what? It's important to the Phandom as a whole because this is a problem with Phandom that we should look at critically.

First off, the above poster is absolutely right. From what I have seen in my deep dives of Phandom history, this is how the tru phan/anti phan war started.

This is why I am so sus of anyone who says "Oh I love my dissection but people who ship X are real freaks. News flash, we are all freaks! our favorite tag is dissection! I recently saw someone call Danielle x Valerie "pedophile adjacent" and my brother in christ, I was horrified. A two year age gap was being called that when five years previous, our biggest issue with the ship was what the hell to call it.

Don't do butch hartman's job for him. Full stop. As a phandom we are insulated against a lot of the newer waves of nonsense because we are so damn old. BUT as a phandom we should also stay alert for the nonsense coming in and practice good fandom practices such as identifying squicks and avoiding them. As well as YKINMKATO (kinktomato) also known as your kink is not my kink and that's okay

You don't like a ship? Awesome, blacklist it, don't make it a moral crusade. Yes this applies to all ships. (And I'm going to go there) EVEN ships like pomp pep. Because that's the one area I see consistently people allowing for just the most lukewarm takes. Not to mention I've seen SEVERAL people chased out of the phandom not even for drawing pomp pep but people drawing badger cereal (platonic) and people interpret as pomp pep and then send hate mail to the creators over.

This attitude sucks, and it has chased some amazing people out of our phandom.

And revolutionary thought, even if someone is engaging in a ship like pomp pep, it's okay. You don't have to like it, or even see it! Just move on and don't bully people over it.

Because consistently. Every year while doing the truce, I always get a few people who like ships that the Phandom has decided are problematic, and every year, I have had to do extensive deep dives into the blogs they get paired with to make sure they won't get attacked for their requests.

As a Phandom, we need to do better.

I know this about Danny Phantom and Phandom but I want to say, as someone who has been in fandom overall for a very long time…this is an ideological issues a lot of older fandoms need to be aware of. You’ve been through it in older fandoms. You’ve had the fights and the shipping wars. You’ve lived through Strike-Thru and archive purges. You’ve seen creators chased out of fandom and the loss of so much fic. And art, but fic is always hit harder, lets be honest.

And you come out the other side. The antis mostly move on or get run off or grow bored or, hell, grow up and realize they shouldn’t be supporting censorship. Or, in some instances, especially with smaller fandoms, they chase everyone else off before moving on, and the fandom dies down to 5 people paddling their canoes, lamenting what used to be.

But either way, you come out the other side. And you look at the wreckage. And you see how it started, and where it ends, and what it costs. And, if you’re lucky, the fandom rebuilds. If you’re lucky, those who remain stand strong against any further attempts at censorship and Anti-rhetoric. If you’re lucky.

It shouldn’t be about luck. It should be a conscious choice. Carry those lessons as Fandom Elders forward. Bring them into new fandoms and stand strong against the Antis. And if you’re young and/or new to fandom? Take it from an Elder. Take it from someone with nearly a quarter of a century’s worth of fandom experience.

Censorship is the death of fandoms because it is the death of creativity. It is a cage; a sinkhole; the yawning maw of an open grave ready to swallow the thing you love. Ready to swallow you. It is Death, dark and hungry, ready to consume any fandom that lets it in the door.

So stop letting it in the door.

Story Title: Courted: The Witch and the Rasera

Excerpt:

Cass woke in the middle of the night to the strangest noise. A long ululation, punctuated by chirps, clicks, and growls. Some stray cats getting into it, maybe. Rubbing her eyes, she stumbled to the bedroom window and peered out.

In the light of the stars, Nazliha shrieked as she lumbered to and fro on the lawn, doing what could only be described as a weird, monstrous song-and-dance.

“Fuck,” Cass mumbled. She stumbled down the staircase, and then she opened the front door with a yawn before grumbling, “Nazliha, what the hell?”

“Cass.” The rasera flapped her wings and wiggled. “Dance with me.”

Cass hugged herself, trying not to shiver in her oversized tee, boxers, and bare feet. “It’s two in the morning. Go home.”

Nazliha picked right back up where she’d left off: wailing at the moon while shimmying from side to side, her tail whipping with way too much energy.

“Nazliha!”

The rasera deflated then, wings and ears drooping. “You will not share my dance?”

“I was sleeping, and now I’m not, so no.”

Nazliha sank onto all fours. “You may return to your sleep. I will go.” And she slunk back into the woods, tail tucked, tufted ears low.

SNAP

Max startled awake, instantly on high alert, his heart thundering in his ears. He wasn’t sure what had made the loud sound that woke him, but there weren’t a lot of options. He was too far from the trail—well over the required 200 feet—for it to be night hikers, unless they were very lost. It was most likely an animal, though what type was the question. Forcing himself to breathe slowly and quietly, Max strained his ears.

He tensed further when he heard shuffling and rustling nearby. Whatever was making the sounds was right outside his hammock. It didn’t sound small, either. There was weight behind the sounds that made Max think maybe it was a bear, and Max silently cursed himself for not sleeping in one of the designated shelter areas. His preference for being alone was going to get him killed one of these days; plenty of guides had told him so over the last five years.

Hell, it might get him killed now if it really was a bear moving around in his camp.
