i need authors or publishing companies to figure out how to write good summaries for fantasy. you do not need to introduce all the vocab terms of this world, you need to give the audience an interesting hook. Like, random names and scenarios pulled out of a hat, "Asmand is on the run for a murder he did not commit. Or, at least he's pretty sure he didn't" is a lot stronger a hook than "Asmand is on the run from The Council of Nine Elders for killing the Svelah, the eldest of them all, while under a Trayenas, a mythical trance emparted on him by Blyth"

I am here today to pass on the good news of warm compresses.

Like many of you, I have read teen magazines, r/skincareaddiction, and even been given a warm compress in a spa casually, as if it were an unusual and inexplicable feature of luxury.

But at no point, did the true meaning of the warm compress become apparent to me, until I hit rock bottom with my skin, at which point I was given the advice to try warm compresses every night for 10-15 minutes on every part of my skin that was red and irritated or actively cooking up some cystic acne.

But I am a changed person. All the shit underneath my skin started to heal or come to the surface, changing my life and freeing me from the tyranny of applying three different layers of makeup just to finally throw up my hands and say, “I guess this is as good as it’s going to get today, whatever.”

I have repented of my nightly tendency to pick at my skin and under moisturize when depressed. I know that my savior, warm compresses, will always be there for me and never asks for money, because they can be created by heating a damp cloth in a bowl for 30 seconds in the microwave.

No skincare treatment is greater than the power of the heated compress, and I have sworn to follow this nightly routine all the days of my life. Amen.

The Germans really cooked making "Hobbyless behaviour" an insult. It is both devastating, applicable to a wide range of people and behaviours, and doesn't resort to swearing.

Man ranting on the internet about the Superbowl halftime show or complaining that something is "woke"? Hobbyless Behaviour. Girls mocking another girl for not looking right? Hobbyless Behaviour. Mindless vandalism? Hobbyless Behaviour.

Is Wuthering Heights good? Is it bad? I cannot tell you.

I think it will be nominated for awards, and that it’s the most psychotic chemistry that has ever existed between two actors.

I no longer wonder why Emerald Fennell decided to make Wuthering Heights, considering she butchered the book (if you have heard this, she did). But she did it to unleash the Cathy-Heathcliff dysfunctional relationship in the most true to book way you could *never* imagine.

The art direction is not subtle (or period accurate) but it is creepy in an entirely unique way, and lush, and metaphorical in a way that is oddly reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland at times.

It is strange, it is fascinating, it is the only movie in which, despite knowing what happens in the book, I have no idea what’s about to happen next. At one point, I asked myself - is there about to be necrophilia? It’s Emerald Fennell, you cannot be sure.

I've made this exact post like 3 different times atp but. It's endlessly funny when people (especially tech company people) treat Asimov's three laws as a legit proposed framework for Artificial Intelligence safety when like. Nearly every single Asimov story they're featured in involves something going wrong as a result of a robot trying to follow three three laws in a situation that makes execution of the laws ambiguous or contradictory. They're not a guideline for legit AI programming they're a plot device designed to cause problems due to interacting in weird ways with complicated hypothetical situations!

In 1978, when she received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, Lindgren spoke against corporal punishment of children in a speech entitled Never Violence! After that, she teamed up with scientists, journalists and politicians to promote non-violent upbringing. In 1979, a law was introduced in Sweden prohibiting violence against children in response to her demands. Until then there was no such law anywhere in the world.

What a legacy. We’re so lucky to have had her.

What I love about this - beyond the anti-violence against children aspect - is that it is a very short story that spurred real change in the world. It’s 11 sentences. 11 sentences helped make it clear how wrong parents harming children is - enough to get a law passed. That’s a tremendous achievement for a story.

For people who have ever wondered “why in the world would anybody imagine a house on legs” or thought “they must have been drunk when they came up with the idea” let me introduce you to a very typical storehouse used across Scandinavia and into Slavic areas:

This type was used mostly by the Sámi, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula. They’re mostly nomadic, and would build these storehouses (Áittit) up off the ground so that bears and wolves couldn’t get into them while they were elsewhere.

Other groups in Scandinavia and Russia also used elevated storerooms; the Norwegian word for them is “stabbur.” Norwegian ones are still elevated off the ground but are often not as high (because they lived right next to it year round) and often had walls around the legs so you could store non-food items that animals wouldn’t care about in a weather-proof room.
