Neil breathed harshly as he pressed himself up against the rough bark of the oak tree to avoid the arrow penetrating his shoulder.
“Fuck!” he gasped, hitting his head into the tree as he took a second to think.
His heart was about to hammer out of his chest, hands shaking from where they were pressed against his sides to successfully take shelter.
The voice of his mother screamed at him to keep going, you stop, you’re dead.
One more second to breathe and Neil set off running once more, swerving in between trees desperately trying to lose the faerie. At least it wasn’t Unseelie, Neil thought hysterically, if it was he may as well just lie down and let them take him.
The only thing he could hear were his desperate pants for air as he ran for his life. Sweat was dripping down his forehead, but he couldn’t stop to wipe it away, instead it dripped down into his shirt causing the fabric to stick to his body.
Neil becomes hopeful, starts thinking he could actually make it out of this alive, when his ankle rolls, caught in a tree root and throwing him immediately onto the forest floor.
Nails digging into the dirt, he scrambles up and his leg immediately buckles when he tries to run again. He limps along as fast as he can but the pain shooting from his ankle made it incredibly difficult.
Another misplaced step led to him falling face-first once more into the dirt, clawing his way along before he felt an overwhelming sense of dread.
‘This is it’, he thought to himself.
