Keep on running up that hill, ladies.
ohhhhh shit. that sucks. superior sex who?
Males over 40 could be putting themselves at greater risk of heart attacks and strokes by taking part in the gruelling events, say experts
i’m a female ultradistance runner and i always assumed that i was hurting my heart, just like what happens to men: i know many middle aged male runners who have had some kind of cardiac event, despite being very fit. this explains why my mother is still racing, while my father had to stop. this is such gorgeous news.
If it’s so bad for them, are we sure they did all the running after prey animals?
Our was it Mother Nature’s idea to kill them off quicker?
Society: Men are the superior sex!
Science: Well actually, you have inferior immune systems, you are more likely to die in childhood, you have less ability to fight off cancer, you're less likely to survive a famine, you're more likely to have a genetic disease with only 1 X, you're more likely to have mental deficiencies with only 1 X, you don't live as long, and we just found out that running can kill you.... So men are actually rather frail, evolutionarily speaking....
Women: (Having dealt with the drama of a man with a simple cold.) No shit Sherlock. 🙄
This is fucking crazy. I remember SO MANY articles about male runners that dropped dead of sudden cardiac events where the family and media were totally blindsided because “he’s a runner, he was so healthy!” and it being all very traumatizing to my cardiophobia because supposedly it proved anyone can get a surprise cardiac event. Like are you kidding me
Oh yeah, this is also a factor in why women perform better in ultra-distance running. I read about it in an article about that woman who beat the fastest known time for the Appalachian trail. Her strategy was, "I can't run faster than a man, but I can run more than a man." So she rested less and ran more, and despite keeping a slower running pace, she blew the previous guy's record out of the water. Beat him by more than a day.
The article points out that at the end of a race, male ultra-distance runners are in bad shape health-wise. They link to a study showing that male ultra-distance runners, but not female ultra-distance runners, display pulmonary edema at the end of a race. Female runners show some signs of cardiac stress, but men show a lot more, a lot more significantly. Interestingly, that study compared time-matched subjects - so it isn't just because the men are running faster. It was a small study, so take it with a grain of salt. But it suggests that long-distance running is harder on a man's heart than a woman's heart.
Running is also the most egalitarian sport with retirees regularly outperforming teenagers. And if a female long distance runner in her 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's has better cardio health than her male peers, (and live longer than them) just HOW sure are we that it was men who were the persistence hunters. Mix this in with the average prehistoric woman being stronger than modern female athletes. Throw this in with colourblindness being more common in men by an order of magnitude: Yeah. Women were better hunter gatherers.
This fact blew me off.
Maybe I, even with physical challenges (scoliosis, myopia) and mental, am stronger than a male with same problems.
