I do like the idea of Shane and Ilya emailing. Email was still kind of a big thing in the early 2010s. It wasn’t unusual to ask someone for their email before their phone number back in 2010. Phone numbers felt very personal and email was more casual. I can imagine them emailing.

Crucially the emails and the text conversations are two very different beasts. The texts are very pragmatic and mostly about hookup logistics. Also, there’s a decent amount of sexting. Shane leaves Ilya on read just as often as he responds but he will occasionally initiate. He’ll text Hi and Ilya will roll back and forth on his bed or couch for a minute before responding Hi. And Shane will respond Are you up and Ilya will say Obviously do you need something and Shane will say Yeah. Please and Ilya will send a dick and ab pic (The Shane Hollander Special) and Shane will say thank you.

The emails, meanwhile, are never really raunchy. Shane’s mostly consist of subjects such as Re: Your interview last night and Re: Re: Re: Re: All Stars Schedule/Plans. Ilya primarily uses them to send memes. A sad kitten with the caption this is u lol. Or a picture of a tree outside his condo with one flower bloomed. No context. Shane actually does reply to these, usually with some random image of his own. They end up on Ilya’s Instagram pretty often in later years.

It results in a very strange microcosm of their relationship when the text messages are juxtaposed to the emails because it ends up looking sort of like

Texts: [dick pic] [dick pic] are u up [Hole] Room 418 [arm flexing] [dick pic] Where are you.

Emails: [Picture of a golden retriever] His name is Bugsy and he can fetch :) Also saw bird that reminded me of you today. Very secretive. No picture because it flew away. Was rude. Also like you. Text me pics.

Fun fact: Team Russia's coach in Episode 1 is absolutely brilliant, and his speech is hilarious. 😄 The actor said he improvised the whole thing, so now I kind of wish he'd had more screen time.

A Group Which Almost Became Historic

It's been over a decade since I first read Les Mis, and first drew this, (which still floats around in reblogs, the original post now being deleted with my old blog) and I thought I ought to finish this for Barricade Day. At the time, that illustration was the most ambitious I had ever drawn.

In the last ten years, Les Mis has perhaps felt more pertinent than ever. In Australia, where I live, bigoted, far-right political parties that were previously considered fringe are leading polls on the back of racist, anti-immigration rhetoric. I donate regularly to a charity that supports refugees that is local to me, the Asylum Seeker Resource Center, and am going to do so again today. I encourage you to do the same, either to the ASRC, or to an equivalent charity in your area.

They move in together full time and Ilya notices that Anya acts differently with Shane than she does with him, more quiet and less playful, and he worries that means she doesn’t like Shane or is jealous, so he hires a dog trainer to come over and see if there’s anything they need to do to help

After a while of talking about how Anya acts the trainer says there’s nothing to worry about, Anya likes Shane just fine, it’s just that she sees him as the boss and is acting accordingly

And Ilya is like. But. I’m the one who adopted her? And raised her before Shane got here?? And the trainer is just like yeah well she sees you more like an equal. And Ilya is like WAIT she thinks Shane is in charge of both of us?? And the trainer is just like well do you interact in a way that would make her think that?

Ilya’s life flashes before his eyes as he thinks of all the times Shane has come over with a snack for Ilya and a treat for Anya, or all the times Shane has announced they’re all going for an after dinner walk, or pets Ilya’s hair and tells him he did a good job at practice, or the fact that he uses the same warning tone with Anya when she misbehaves as he does with Ilya when he’s causing problems on purpose

Shane comes home to Ilya with his face in his hands going oh god I’m not Anya’s dad I’m her brother and she thinks we’re both your pets. And Shane just goes. What.

The Metros absolutely crush Buffalo, and Shane's phone get's broken in the post-game locker room celebration chaos.

He is Freaking Out bc he doesn't actually know what Ilya's phone number is. His SIM card got crushed underneath a pair skates, so there's no recovering "Lily's" contact card.

On top of that, his old Ottowa number won't transfer to his Montreal provider. So "Lily's" texts will now be delivered into the ether. Or to some random person's phone if his old Ottowa number gets given out again.

Ilya of course has literally no idea this has happened and is sending his usual flirtatious messages to...silence. No response. He's not even getting left on read. Because the messages aren't even getting read. He goes through the five stages of grief. Fuck Shane Hollander, he doesn't need this shit. They're supposed to play against each other Tomorrow for fucks sake. His resolve lasts for about....two hours? And then he's on social media. What's this fucking asshole up to that he can't even read Ilya's texts?

He pulls up the first interview, the one right after Buffalo. Shane looks....really stressed out. Which is confusing given that they've just won.

"Yes of course I am super happy to win. Unfortunately the locker room celebration did get a little out of hand though."

He holds up his mangled phone.

"So if you're trying to contact me, sorry about that!"

He's blushing and smiling and seems so flustered and embarrassed. He's looking at a camera, millions of people can hear him, but he's speaking directly to Ilya. Ilya's face breaks out into his "you have a stylist?" smile. He feels....a little embarrassed about his crashout, but also super fucking relieved. Ilya swipes through a couple more videos and watches the most recent interview.

"We are absolutely looking forward to facing off against the Raiders. Also I brought this up last time but, turns out I can't keep my old phone number. So if you're texting me and I'm not responding, it's because I can't!"

He laughs, but it seemd a bit forced. Like he might tear up if he gets pushed the wrong way. Ilya goes back and watches through all the interviews since the Buffalo game. Shane has found a way to bring up his broken phone in every single interview for the past two weeks. It's so sweet...and also a little heartbreaking. He knew exactly what was gonna happen, and was terrified of Ilya thinking that he didn't want to talk to him. He didn't want Ilya to feel alone and confused and upset. He's so fucking ernest and endearing.

Ilya cannot Wait to give him shit about it on the ice tomorrow.

I get annoyed when people are making posts that are shocked that Shane pulled Ilya. And like maybe, /maybe/, Shane locked down Ilya (there's an argument that Ilya 'domesticity kink' Rosanov locked himself down as soon as he could get Shane to agree to it) but Shane did not pull Ilya, Ilya pulled Shane.

Canonically Shane is one of the hottest men in the world, he's rich, he is at the top of his high intensity career, and he has the biggest saddest wettest most beautiful brown eyes out of anyone on the planet. The moment Ilya saw a scrap of interest he was arranging for them to be in a commercial and jerking off in the shower at him. Ilya watched this man fold his pants one (1) time and thought "well i gotta fuck him forever now". Shane tried to say there wouldn't be a next time and Ilya was like it's too late, I've got your number, you're never getting rid of me, if I annoy you enough you will come organize my socks as like a sex thing.

Its true his little laugh from the bed in 1410 was both "Oh my god this guy is ridiculous" and "Oh my god im going to need this like oxygen now" and then shane kissed him on the forehead after to say the 2 year wait (for him, for ilya specifically) was worth it, and Ilya realizes yep, he's done for.

While homophobia in male sports is the true villain of Heated Rivalry can we all take a minute to appreciate how the boys helped build their own torment nexus? Ilya used the nascent rivalry narrative to get the pre-rookie season shoot to fly the boy he liked over so he could hook up with him, thus building the rivalry up in the media. Shane lets everyone around him think Ilya is an asshole they should all hate as a screen for their situationship.

The ultimate pack it in boys, we were young and made a blunder. Needed a 12 step plan that involved moving country and setting up a whole foundation to undo the Saw trap they helped make for themselves.

it's important to me that ilya remains captain of the centaurs after shane joins, but i have a specific picture in my mind of shane being assistant captain and being generally harmless and super chill , so the centaurs see him as like the chill parent (something to be said about shane being content in letting someone else, specifically His Someone, have the reins and enjoying not being in charge) but then ilya has to be out for a few weeks for like health or smth so shane goes into Captain Mode and the centaurs are scared shitless by how intense he gets all of a sudden. the most intense drills of all time. the hardest plays they've ever heard of. the strictest practices on earth. and they suddenly understand why shane led the metros/voyagers to victory so many times and why ilya treats him like the boss in their relationship. and then as soon as ilya comes back he turns it off and the centaurs are like Oh Thank Fuck Because What The Hell Was That
