Its so bad, sometimes the abuse carries over into adulthood when kids GET rights. Because yeah ^ children are considered property of the parent here in the US. Everything the child does falls onto the parent's heads but also the child can't do anything or make important life decisions to their own person without their parent's explicit permission and often times, they need to be there anyway to oversee the procedure

Catholic morality is mostly about the value of justice in distribution and not consumerism (see Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum novarum, the foundation of modern Catholic social teaching). Criticizing consumerism is pretty consistent for any political, cultural, and religious movement that has aspirations for society other than the infinite accumulation of capital.

Commodity production is not separate from private control over the commanding heights of the economy—after all, what is capital but command over society’s labor through ownership of exchangeable wealth (whether in the form of cash or assets)? Capitalist society is a totality formed by the intimate link of production and consumption alike in the circulation process. Even the production of surplus-value is founded in the productive consumption of workers who use up raw materials in their transformation, with the use of tools and machines, into finished consumer products to be sold. And the workers are compensated with wages which are to be spent on whatever produced commodities are made available to consumers of their means.

Objecting to the aesthetics of consumer society just as easily carries over into political resistance to the power of capitalists to organize public space. For example, the earliest participants in art nouveau (mostly coming out of the socialist Arts and Crafts movement) were trying to provide an alternative and dignified form of mass, public art to the manipulative slop of the rising advertising industry. Communists like Giancarlo De Carlo historically considered architecture, as an art of public space, to be an extremely important site for class struggle and collaborated with working class militants to create designs that would encourage the participation of residents in organizing the shared spaces of their own everyday lives. Even aesthetically-motivated resistance against the destruction of ecosystems for the construction of Walmarts or suburbias is also already a political campaign to limit the power of capital to command society’s appropriation of space.

If we critique the most obnoxious and wasteful trappings of consumer culture, like the cheap plastic crap that is destined to sit in landfills for millennia and almost never degrade, that can just as easily be an entry point into communist politics. Obviously it isn’t everything, but there’s no reason to pretend as if there’s an incompatibility between critiquing the ideology promoted in the sale and advertising of quantity over quality consumer objects and the capitalist status system tied to acquiring them. Cultural revolution is important for communists, because we can only get anywhere on the basis of regular poor people actually fighting for control over the conditions of their own lives and demanding a life lived with dignity. And that means attacking all everyday degradations that we are subjected to, from exploitation to advertising to abandonment

A frustrating part of the mainstream vegan “love all animals and protect the environment” mindset is the fact that things need to die in real-life ecology all the time but deer hunting season makes icky feelings and carp culls aren’t cottagecore

The vegan “any animal death ever is morally wrong” mindset doesn’t hold up when:

We don’t have any of the large predators we used to (black bears, mountain lions, or gray wolves) but still retain large deer populations. If nothing is removing animals, they’ll quickly overload the carrying capacity of the environment and have massive losses to starvation and disease that can also pass on to livestock. Human hunters replace the large predators that our landscape can no longer support.

It’s kinder to euthanize an un-releasable hawk rather than try to find it a permanent home with humans. Wildlife rehabs have extremely limited space and resources and are usually run entirely on donated money and volunteer time. Only a few are large and stable enough to care for permanent residents long-term, and those spots are few and far between.

An invasive species poses a danger to threatened native wildlife. I will admit- Australian possums are adorable. But not in New Zealand, where they’re an invasive species that eats the eggs of ground-dwelling birds that previously had no such predators. The landowners I worked with replanting native bush, all native Maori, had no qualms about setting the dogs on them.

I don’t know how to end this except. Sometimes things just gotta die and acting otherwise just isn’t a realistic expectation.

Israelis constantly squeal at the notion of being called colonisers but so much of how Israel acts today and even in its rhetoric really just mimics colonial powers of the past. Colonial and imperial powers also used to unleash methods of collective punishment as a way to squash rebellions, if one civilian (or even soldier) from the colonial entity got hurt, colonisers had no problem murdering hundreds of the colonised peoples just to avenge that one civilian. Colonial powers would frequently seize land for whatever purpose they saw fit, they’d destroy local economies and pillage resources for their own benefit all to the detriment of the natives. But I think the rhetoric is where it really shows from the painting of Jews as exclusive victims to the dismissal and denial of Palestinian suffering, to even just the arrogant hubris of Zionists and even bragging at times when Israel would assassinate certain figures whilst chucking a tantrum at the mere mention of arresting Netanyahu for war crimes. There’s so much more I could mention but as I said, Israel’s behaviour really just speaks for itself!

Funnily enough I made this post yesterday before I had even known about what took place in Nablus. A Palestinian killed a settler with the settler's own weapon after the settlers invaded the Palestinian village and the Palestinian is being touted as a terrorist by Israeli politicians and media alike. After the settler was killed, 4 Palestinians were killed all from the same family. Palestinians are demonised for defending their land even while land-stealing armed settlers invade their land and then when they're killed by those armed settlers, it's painted as the settlers "defending themselves." Israelis don't stop to ask what the settlers were doing there in the first place, to Israel those settlers have a right to be there because in their eyes, it is "Jewish land." Then the likes of Ben Gvir have threatened to seize land and demolish homes of those responsible for the settler killings and even called to bomb them, and this is something Smotrich has echoed before too.
