It's not just to have a "do over" that doesn't involve the original cast, it's to cut them out of the royalties. Literally the entire point is to make sure all the money made by Harry Potter goes to transphobes or people willing to work with transphobes.

I hate the push that you can quit addictions by pure willpower because it perpetuates the idea that people who can't have committed a moral failing of some kind. We all may know some people who did quit an addiction cold turkey, and with no aid, you may be one of them. And that's fantastic, but it is not the norm. It is more than okay to need help to quit an addiction. Relapse is also part of the process. Many people relapse several times before they are able to quit for good. Let's have compassion.

If you care about Animal Cruelty in Factory Farms, you need to get legislation passed. It must become a crime to mistreat animals in those ways, and when malfeasances occurs, the onus of responsibility for those crimes must fall upon wealthy shoulders. That, also, requires legislation. It requires regulations, and regulators.

The largest source of Microplastics is wear and tear on automobile tires. It doesn’t matter what brand of shampoo you buy. It doesn’t matter which company you support with your dollar. The issue of Public Transit is too large-scale to be handled at anything less than the municipal level.

It’s not enough to just not participate in society

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

I remember walking down the street and seeing a sign protesting George W. Bush’s war on Iraq, so I think that.

My family was living in LA, we were actually just preparing to move so it's this weird mess of boxes and burning and my parents being outraged (not surprised) at the outcome of the trial. The 1977 New York City blackout during the Summer of Sam. Down in Virginia, I remember the local affiliates of the Big Three going to static as they lost their signal feeds from New York. Our local ABC affiliate scrambled and threw on an old syndie copy of a Diana Rigg episode of "The Avengers" from their library. I woke up on my eleventh birthday some weeks later to headlines that the Son of Sam had been apprehended.

Three Mile Island and Mount Saint Helens were also big news events during my junior high school years, but the seminal news event for me between 1979-81 is a tossup between the 444 day Iranian Hostage Crisis and the failed assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan.

By the time of the Challenger disaster, I'm a college student and a much more engaged adult.

When OP noted that they were in second grade when the OJ verdict came down... I can quite clearly remember where I was when the verdict was announced: in a science class at Tidewater Community College, listening to the verdict being read on headphones. My dropping my pen was enough to prompt the professor to ask what the verdict was... but in my head, I was certain that was a class took over the summer in 1995, so that I could make sure I got my Associates in 2 years, and not during the Fall semester in October.

For me, the first major news story that I can remember being consciously aware of was the coverage of the unsuccessful attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan.
