I don't know who needs to hear this, but the magic ratio for ganache (a firm one, such as you would use to make truffles or enrobe a cake) is 1 tablespoon of heavy cream per one ounce of chocolate. Chop the chocolate (or use chips), then boil the cream, immediately pour it over the chocolate, and whisk until smooth. People get so impressed whenever I make ganache but it is literally so easy. When it's freshly made you can dip fruit or cookies in it or use it to fill doughnuts, and if you let it cool and harden somewhat you can roll spoonfuls into balls to make truffles or use it as a filling for sandwich cookies. Also if you're feeling gremlinous you can just eat it with a spoon.
Important addendum I discovered last year: the above is the magic ratio specifically if you are using dark chocolate (which I always was because it's my favorite). The process is the same, but for milk chocolate the ratio is 1 tablespoon of heavy cream per 1.5oz of chocolate and for white chocolate it's 1 tablespoon of heavy cream per 2oz of chocolate. This is because milk and white chocolate have less chocolate per chocolate so they behave differently. Now you know. Go forth and make delicious ganaches.

Dude, I almost cried yesterday because of AI. I can’t grade anymore without getting upset because of how much kids are using generative AI. How can I assess their ability to think critically when they aren't thinking critically? One kid admitted he used ChatGPT on an assignment, and he was like, "So? Is my answer right?" And I was like, first of all, whether or not it's "correct" is not the problem, and ALSO, it was INCORRECT. Like...majorly so!
They can’t fucking think for themselves (or rather, they’re losing the ability). This is not “ooooh technology scary” -- this is a fundamental, they can't fucking answer questions when I ask them to their faces. I fucking HATE when my colleagues roll their eyes and say, "Well, this is how we felt about phones! Just accept it!" First of all, it's different. And TWO! We're FUCKING FIGHTING PHONES every day! We've literally banned all cell phone use during class in my district because letting kids use their phones and not fighting their use in class FUCKED US OVER, and now we have to FIX IT.
Okay, but also, kudos to Tumblr, the weirdo website, and our anti-AI stance here because my weirdo queer kids are the ONLY ONES who are STAUNCHLY against gen AI; they're the only ones reliably not using AI. Dear children of Tumblr, thank you for being little weirdos who give a shit.
It was a slightly different situation, but it's translatable. This became a stable for me.
I asked my students if it's nice/helpful/good/acceptable/normal to help someone else lift something really heavy they were struggling with. Of course they agree! Then I asked them if it would still be (or explain to them that it isn't) nice/helpful/good/acceptable/normal to help someone lift heavy weights if they are working out at the gym. The answer is no! Because the POINT is that it's hard to do alone! That's why it makes you stronger! (Plus it gives the kids a very funny and therefore memorable visual for the concept. You can play into it and have a laugh with the kids at how weird someone would be if they did that!)
I often used "Don't lift their weights!" as a shorthand when a student was trying to give another kid the right answer.
Anyways, AI is lifting your weights for you. If you go to gym everyday and have a robot lift the weights for you, are you going to get any stronger? Even if you are going to the gym and "lifting weights" everyday? Even if the robot was really good at it? School is the gym for your mind. It's hard for the same reason gym weights are heavy.

I'm also in the, admittedly small, camp that we shouldn't be banning AI in classrooms. Or phones.
Bans don't work. These things are both part of our society, and kids need to (and deserve to!) be taught how to interact with and use them. They're not going away. The AI bubble will burst, but it's not going away. Phones definitely aren't going away.
It's like that grocery store post going around. If you ban kids from the grocery store, all you're doing is creating teens and adults who don't know how to function in the grocery store. Same with phones and AI. If you don't teach kids how to use them, you're just creating adults who also don't know.
Kids/teens/adults don't just have some innate knowledge of how to understand and use AI. It has been sold to them as the magic tool that can do everything, so why are we expecting them to just somehow know different? The weird queer tumblr kids aren't against it because they have some special in-built knowledge, they're against it because they're part of a community that has actually educated them on the matter.
So educate them! Use metaphors like this! Start the year with a class survey where you ask everyone what their special interest is and then YOU generate an essay on it and have THEM grade it and go over the areas where it gets things wrong. Explain how the backend works, how it's not trying to actually give you answers, just trying to sound like an answer would. Show them the news articles and studies coming out about how janky it really is. Teach it, just like anything else.
Honestly, I love the idea of "Suggest kids generate an essay by AI on a subject they KNOW they know, and let them get mad about it." That'll probably stick with them MUCH better than anything else.
Exactly! And, yeah, you're using AI in the process. But if you convince even ONE student not to use AI with an assignment like that, that's a TON less queries/data/water usage in the long term.
A person isn't going to care that you told them AI hallucinated a citation. That means nothing. It's abstract.
But if they LOVE, say, a specific book series and they KNOW it started coming out in 2015, but then the AI writes an essay INSISTING it started coming out in 2017, they're going to notice. They're going to pick up on it. That MEANS SOMETHING to them. It's solid.
Will this method work for everyone? Of course not. But that's true of teaching anything. As long as you're impacting at least some people, that's what matters. You can try to hit the others some other way.
