Something that I think should be an important part of solarpunk aesthetics is screws.

Look at your smartphone. No screws. You've got to have specialized tools to get inside your phone to repair something. There are certain pieces of tech that are glued in place and glue can't be undone without permanently breaking the bond.

But screws!

You can take apart a broken old radio, repair what's broken, and, if you were careful in taking it apart, you can put it back together and have a fully functioning radio and all you need is a common screwdriver!

It's hard to build screws and other mechanical fasteners because it requires more planning than clamps and glues, but isn't that what solarpunk is all about‽ It's about care and sustainability and and a radio or a computer built carefully with repair in mind is a sustainable computer that stays out of landfills and in use.

I was watching a video that had people using whistles in the background and I realized that one of the things I do is teach lifeguards how to use their whistles very effectively. So I would love to share some tips on how to make your whistle as loud as possible, in case anyone wants that.

If you have ever played a wood wind instrument, you may know that you have to block the reed with your tongue; whistles are the same concept. You block the mouthpiece with your tongue to let the air pressure build. So that when you release its REALLY loud. Like, can silence 300 people at a swimming pool loud. For that reason we also tend to use short bursts instead of long blasts, but it works with long blasts too.

Also make sure you aren't wrapping your fist around the whole whistle, the air channels on the top need to be free to get a good sound.

Finally, pealess whistles (industry standard is fox40's) give the best sound, but use what you have

We can take control back! Community mapping projects using free open source software let you add where surveillance cameras are. I often take walks through new areas and observe the buildings to spot the bastards. When you do it, you find out there are more blind spots that you think. If you have a good map of public cameras you can avoid them or tell people about them. Or other things :)

kind of a tangent but i recently went to a bowling alley with my friend i'm 19 he's 18 and the woman at the door didn't want to let us in because there was a sign saying under-18s needed adult supervision. everything got cleared up and we were able to go bowl, but i'm still so mad about the fact that kids need adult supervision to go to a bowling alley and arcade. like okay maybe young kids should have supervision but what do you mean middle and high schoolers need to hold mommy's hand while they play video games. kids aren't just addicted to their phones because phones are addicting, we're addicted to our phones because there's nothing else to fucking do
