Dave Brandt was so much more than a meme. He partnered with universities to experiment with and expand soil conservation and cover crop techniques, worked to educate other farmers through worldwide conventions and direct mentorship, founded the Soil Health Academy, and was called the "Obi-Wan Kenobi of soil health" by the chief of the USDA's conservation department.
There is no healthy planet without healthy ag practices, and this guy was a legend.
The A-horizon on his farm was 4 feet deep
You do not understand
Most modern Ag operations don’t even have a proper A-Horizon. They’re too busy turning the earth every time they replant. The A-horizon is the Black Gold that makes Soil Soil. It’s a structurally complex soil horizon that must be built in place by the interactions of Plants and Fungi and Insects. It is The Thing that soaks up rain and holds onto it for plants. The A-Horizon is The Thing that builds up when you let a field sit fallow. The act of tilling creates fecundity by breaking up the A-horizon. On a really good Organic no-till farm you might find an A-horizon between 3-6 inches.
His A-horizon was 4 feet deep. 50 inches.
I-
I have no context. His farm was covered in a living skin thick enough for a child to stand in.
Gives me hope for what we could accomplish if we got our collective heads on straight, you know? Like. This was one guy. A brilliant man, who knew what he was up to, but. The thing about brilliant ideas is they can be shared.
50 inches. The mind reels.
This is so much more impressive than I can understand and comprehend and I would love to know more about A horizon
Do you love the color of the Soil?
Humus, or Humic Compounds, are a cryptic and poorly understood set of organic substances. As the final metabolic result of once-living things being digested first by macroscopic organisms, and then by microorganisms, they resist most forms of analysis, and have cryptic structures. A few that we have managed to isolate and study are the Humic & Fulvic Acids.
Humus has a number of remarkable tendencies. It is capable of retaining water far better than any raw mineral clay; it also retains electrically charged clay granules, which themselves retain mineral ions, all of which is essential to make a soil a high-quality resource for Plants to grow in.
A composter is a box that contains an environment that is conducive to the production of Humus, but the best way to produce it is in-place, by laying layers of organic material down over an unbroken earth and growing things out of that. The interaction of the plants rooting, the fungus weaving itself through everything, the bacteria and archaea metabolizing as they do, and inorganic weathering forces all combine to gradually build up the microscopic equivalent of a complex megastructure capable of retaining far more water, and containing far more nutrients, than any inorganic substrate.
This stuff is black gold. This is the stuff that determines whether or not a plot of land is going to be “productive.” The knowledge of how to make it, how to care for it, is an essential piece of wisdom that our civilization needs to remember.
Fortunately, folks seem to have the right response:
Farmers are more important to the continuity of civilization than administrators, no matter what the elitists say. This knowledge is important.
Exactly
On twitter I’m seeing dozens of threads from Black activists warning people against burnout, giving all sorts of useful tips about preventing and managing it for the sake of a long-term, sustainable effort.
On tumblr I’m seeing a hell of a lot of young white kids yelling at anyone who actually follows those steps, and acting like burnout is a moral falling rather than a well-proven psychological phenomenon.
Be careful who you get your information from. Don’t let guilt lead you to make choices that will harm both you and the movement.
I’m going to reblog this again since I see more individuals are inquiring about burnout prevention tips in the notes and it’s why I sought out this resource. I hope it helps you!

This is important!!

Preventing burnout. Keeping the movement alive.
What is burnout? Burnout is the experience of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion often caused by longterm involvement in emotionally demanding situations.
Effects of burnout on a movement. In a 2015 study it was observed that roughly half of activists who experienced burnout did not take a break or hiatus. Instead, they ended up leaving the movement for good.
Why is burnout common among activists? Research has highlighted burnout among activists is usually caused by the setting of unrealistically high standards for oneself. Activists commonly feel the weight of the world upon their shoulders, with a heightened sense of accountability, empathy, and guilt.
Tips to fight burnout. 1. Identify your feelings. Symptoms of burnout can include:
Anxiety
Guilt
Isolation
Irritability
Anger
Sadness
Pessimism
Disappointment
Numbness
Fatigue
Insomnia
Lack of motivation
Physical pain/sickness
2. Talk to a trusted confidant. Whether a therapist or a friend, sometimes taking the opportunity to let out your thoughts and feelings with someone who understands us can alleviate stress, or point us in a direction we may not have yet considered.
3. Find healthy outlets. Work on a coping bank, a go-to list of activities and behaviors that give you a sense of fulfillment, relief, and replenishment when you’re feeling burnout.
4. Learn when to step back. While your voice is valuable, know that many others are willing to carry on the work you have done, until you’re ready to step back in.

it's a moral failing to still be a harry potter fan
if you ever worry to yourself that still liking harry potter makes you a bad person it's because it does
don't engage with Harry Potter media such as streaming, buying merch, or listening to soundtracks.
instead, pirate, bootleg, and diy. watch the movies via thrifted DVDs. if you must get merch, thrift that too! you can always find Harry Potter stuff at 2nd hand stores.
moral of the story, keep your morals and ideals in mind when spending you money.
do you really want to give a racist terf your money?
jesus fucking christ just let it go. shut the fuck up and just let it go. you are still supporting the IP you are still keeping it relevant you are still signaling to people that its a cool thing to be into. you are splitting hairs about how to still have your blorbos while we are talking about the public & explicit funding of a hate movement. it couldn't be more obvious that your motivation is not to be criticized and not to help anybody who is more vulnerable than you. fuck you. shut the fuck up.
If I see you in public wearing a Harry Potter shirt I'm not asking you if you bought it ethically I'm just going to avoid you because you're walking around signaling that you aren't a safe person.

“What if poor people abuse the system?”
The system intrinsically abuses poor people.
Hope this helps.
"What if poor people abuse the system?"
Rich people abuse the system far more and out of pure greed, not necessity or desperation so idrc about that

never ceases to amaze me that you can make $200k a year doing a fake email job but people who take care of animals and old people make maybe $2 above minimum wage. sick society
please please please remember that no matter what your manager says, it is never that serious. unless you are literally performing surgery or defusing a bomb, it simply is not that serious
last november i stopped working at an office job that was so deeply Corporate™️ it seemed like the setup to a bit. like, every joke you’ve ever heard about a miserable, soul-sucking, completely pointless pencil-pushing job was modeled after this place. management was so afraid of people having personalities that male employees were not allowed to have pierced ears per company policy.
as is somehow Mandatory for jobs like these, anyone in a position of power made it their job to make everyone else’s lives as miserable as possible with constant micromanaging. like, i got told in a strongly worded email to reorder the $2 plastic shelves in my cubicle that i used to store spare paper. it was fucking dire.
but anyways. the reason i quit has to do with what im talking about in the original post. despite the fact that i was consistently at the top of our department leaderboards (yes, we had those, they were emailed out daily) my manager decided that because i couldn’t stay late one day because of a doctors appointment, i needed a Talking To.
he spent an entire day hounding me about this single event, saying that it was a “growing pattern of careless behavior” and that i “forced [my coworkers] to stay until 6 pm”
obviously i felt awful. i was friends with everybody on my team! i didnt want to inconvenience them!! even thought i knew that he was being too harsh, the guilt trip still got to me. but every time i tried to defend myself and explain what was actually going on, he would double down and make it an even bigger issue. this kept going and going until the situation got spun into me being a terrible employee who needed an Action Plan, and i was Ruining The Department, and Everyone Was Going To Stay Overtime Because Of Me.
while i was dealing with this instead of, yknow, actually doing the work that is apparently so dire, i realized… it wasn’t that serious. like, not even fuckin close. the things my coworkers had to do overtime to complete? folding papers. and while yes, it was shitty that they had to stay so late to finish up, i wasn’t the one who made them do it. my manager did! and there were literally dozens of other options to pick from instead, including just leaving the work for me to do the next day! the work we did was nowhere near time sensitive, and certainly not worth the overtime the company paid.
but because i wouldn’t just roll over and accept a chewing out that i didn’t deserve, my manager decided to keep laying on the pressure until i caved. man was assigning legitimately apocalyptic levels of intensity over folding papers. i went from being an asset to the team to getting yelled at by both him and his manager for my “poor performance.”
so i quit. because it’s not that serious.
this whole shitshow is a standard tactic that employers use to trick you into signing away more of your life to the job. make you feel stupid, make you feel like the menial tasks you perform have these dire consequences that simply do not exist. ramp up your anxiety over nothing. they will punish other people because you aren’t slaving away hard enough, and then say that it’s your fault in the first place. you’re not being a team player! you’re not pulling your weight! don’t you see that everyone else is doing their part? don’t you understand what will happen if you don’t contribute?
it is absolutely fucking vital that you don’t listen to any of it. it is even more so that you don’t fall for it when they try to pull this tactic to get you to turn against someone else. the most effective tactic to get someone to fall in line in a workplace is social ostracization. don’t be a tool for your boss to use to manipulate someone else.
it is never that serious.
there’s this thing that happens on this website that’s like the opposite of pissing on the poor and is far better but also still somewhat annoying when you post something where the point is implied and then someone else adds the point you were making in a reblog as though they are like, adding something new and insightful to the post. eg you can post something about a female scientist from the 1800s having her intellect undervalued in her time and someone else is going to add like “that’s so crazy… i think they were treating her this way due to misogyny” and like well yes. i mean… yeah. you got it
I consider them the reading comprehension translators. Good guiderails for the people that need them. Much like the gutter walls at the bowling alley.
