āSnape was just a fuckboy who was bitter he got friendzoned,ā says the fan who romanticizes the Marauders and conveniently forgets that the only character to ever act entitled to Lilyās romantic attention was James Potter, who bullied Snape from the start simply because Snape was Lilyās friend and male. Like, if anyone was a fuckboyā¦
Except that Snape is the one who felt entitled to Lilyās attention. Did James pursue her a little too aggressively? Yes, but he behaved like a pretty typical teenage boy with a crush. When Lily rejects him James brushes it off and keeps trying to get him to liker her, Snapeās the one who gets upset and lashes out at her. Also, by literally everyone else Snape and James are described as having the same sort of relationship as Harry and Malfoy but we only ever see the relationship from Snapeās point of view because James is dead. Do you think Harry is a bully too?
So hereās the thing. Literally nothing you just said is supported in canon.
James was more than āa little too aggressiveā in his pursuit of Lily. He relentlessly bullied her best friend, and at one point even tried to use this as leverage to get Lily to date him (heād stop the torment, if Lily would agree to a date). Lily herself calls him out on how he is a bully, saying he walks down corridors, hexing anyone who annoys him just because he can. When they get together in 7th year, itās because he supposedly has stopped his bullying ways, but continues to bully Severus in secret behind her back. That is canon. That is said by Sirius and Remus, after Harry saw āSnapeās worst memoryā and was appalled at how fucking horrid his father was.
And, why is it that James constantly bullies Severus?
JK herself said: āJames always suspected Snape harboured deeper feelings for Lily, which was a factor in Jamesā behaviour towards Snape.āĀ
So. Because Severus Snape was Lily Evansā best friend, and a guy, James worried that he was a rival for her affections, and from day one targeted him for bullying. Because how dare Severus even think he has the right to talk to her, when obviously James is the one she should pay attention to.
The only character we see not respect Lilyās rejection is James Potter. This is canon. He doesnāt ever take ānoā for an answer. He refuses to. He resorts to lying to her in order to finally get her to date him.
Severus Snape, for one, never tried to be anything more to Lily than her friend. We are given no evidence to the contrary. And when she breaks off their friendship, he leaves her alone. We see him bargain for her life, we see him mourn her, but we see nothing to suggest he ever talked to her again after she ended their friendship. He respected her decision, and backed off.
You also seem to misunderstand the comparison between Harry and Draco. Harry is Severus and Draco is James. Itās another case of a rich, self-entitled jerk bullying someone from an abusive home, just because he feels slighted.
I almost scrolled past this, but I wonāt because itās exactly the kind of Snape apologia and vilification of James that really bothers me in the HP fandom.
1- There is absolutely no evidence in canon that James ārelentlesslyā pursued Lily. That is fanon. Sure fanon has that trope about James repetitively asking Lily out and almost stalking her. In canon we only see James ever ask Lily out ONCE. In Snapeās worst memory. The rest of the time we see Snape having to tell Lily that James fancies her and there is no evidence she even knew about it before that, then we have Lily actively defend the maradaurs to Snape asking him why he was so obessed with them :
(DH, The Princeās tale, p540 bloomsburry edition )
ā⦠thought we were supposed to be friends?ā Snape was saying. āBest friends?ā āWe are, Sev, but I donāt like some of the people youāre hanging around with! Iām sorry, but I detest Avery and Mulciber! Mulciber! What do you see in him Sev? Heās creepy! D'you know what he tried to do to Mary Macdonald the other day?ā Lily ha reached a pillar and leaned against it, looking up into the thin, sallow face. āThat was nothingā said Snape. āIt was a laugh, thatās all -ā āIt was Dark Magic, and if you think thatās funny -ā āWhat about the stuff Potter and his mates get up to?ā demanded Snape. His colour rose again as he said it, unable, it seemed to hold in his resentment. āWhatās Potter to do with anything?ā said Lily. āThey sneak out at night. Thereās something weird about that Lupin. Where does he keep going?ā āHeās ill,ā said Lily. āThey say heās ill -ā āEvery month at the full moon?ā said Snape. āI know your theory,ā said Lily, and she sounded cold āWhy are you so obsessed with them, anyway? Why do you care what theyāre doing at night?ā āIām just trying to show you theyāre not as wonderful as everyone seems to think they are.ā The intensity of his gaze made her blush; āThey donāt use Dark Magic, thoughā.
Now, what does this scene tells you. First for someone who supposedly didnāt give as good as he got and was only the helpless victim of James, we learn that : 1- Lily doesnāt understand why he is so obsessed with them and canāt see the resemblance between the marauders and the very real, blood supremacist, dark magic using bullies that Snape was hanging out with and found funny. 2- Snape was very clearly trying to out Remus and actively trying to prove his case; so please do tell me, if this isnāt reason enough for James to hate Snape then what is? Not only did Snape actively try back when he was 15, but he DID out Remus years later because he couldnāt let go of the past when Remus was being nothing but cordial with him.
2- Which brings me to my next point, the idea that Snape was an innocent victim and not a bully himself is utter bullshit.
Letās look at another excerpt from the books shall we:
(DH, The Princeās tale, p542, Blommsburry edition)
āI was. I would have done. I never meant to call you Mudblood, it just -ā āSlipped out?ā There was no pity in Lilyās voice. āItās too late. Iāve made excuses for you for years. None of my friends can understand why I even talk to you. You and your precious little Death Eater friends ā you see, you donāt even deny it! You donāt even deny thatās what youāre all aiming to be! You canāt wait to join You-Know-Who, can you?ā He opened his mouth, but closed it without speaking. āI canāt pretend any more. Youāve chosen your way, Iāve chosen mine.ā āNo ā listen, I didnāt mean -ā ā- to call me a Mudblood? But you call everyone of my birth Mudblood, Severus. Why should I be any different?ā
Now what does this tells us? This tells us that unlike what the Snape apologists often love to pretend, Snape wasnāt an inactive by stander in the wannabe-death eaters sessions of muggleborns bullying. He actively took part in it, he actively threw slurs at them. Lily herself mention that and Snape doesnāt deny any of it.
Not only that but we also know that Snape invented Levicorpus, which we later see James use, how do you think James learned it if not because he had it used against him? We even see Snape use Sectusempra on James; Sectusempra, aka the spell capable of cutting someone open and leave them to bleed to death. This is the kind of experimentation Snape did with Dark Magic, so spare me if I donāt buy the āpoor innocent Snapeā narrative. He was a bully at school, going after muggleborn with his band of magical equivalent to the Hitler youth. But aside from that, please do tell me more about how Snape was innocent and never gave as much as he got when even LILY calls him out on his bullying of Muggleborns and admitted herself that she couldnāt excuse him anymore.
āSeverus Snape, for one, never tried to be anything more to Lily than her friend. We are given no evidence to the contrary. And when she breaks off their friendship, he leaves her alone. We see him bargain for her life, we see him mourn her, but we see nothing to suggest he ever talked to her again after she ended their friendship. He respected her decision, and backed off.ā
Excuse me? We should admire him because he backed off after HE threw a slur at her and still tried to talk to her when she didnāt want to, even saying he would sleep in front of the common room if she refused to have that talk?
And above all, we should think Snape is such a great guy because he bargained for her life? WHAT? Snape - may I remind you - was the reason why her life was even in danger to start with! Snape is the one who sold a BABYāS LIFE to Voldemort without second thoughts and only backed off when he realized that the baby in question was Lilyās. And not only that but he only partly backed off because he didnāt give a shit about what would happen to Harry and James, AKA the man she loved and HER SON. Dumbledore himself called him out on it:
āYou disgust me,ā said Dumbledore, and Harry had never heard so much contempt in his voice. Snape seemed to shrink a little. āYou do not care, then about the deaths of her husband and child? They can die, as long as you have what you want?ā
I genuinely cannot believe my eyes that some people are trying to paint this as a selfless act on Snapeās part. If it had been Neville he would have let him die without blinking, just like he was ready to let Harry die, a ONE YEAR OLD BOY and the son of the woman he claimed to love. I do not doubt that he loved her, but his love was entirely and completely selfish and none of what he did was for her. He did what he did for himself and to feel better about what he had caused. Snape was not a good person. Snape was bad guy who did the right thing for the wrong reasons. All his life he remained the same bitter bullying douchebag, he bullied kids as a gorwn ass man, he never got over it unlike James.
The point of Snape isnāt āgood is not niceā, the point of Snape is āyou donāt have to be a good person to do the right thingā. āGood is not niceā is in fact the point of James. Was James an immature ātoeragā (as Lily colourfully put it) when he was 15? Sure he was, but his heart was always at the right place which is something we cannot say of Snape. And he grew out of it, which is another thing we cannot say of Snape.
The fact that James bullied Snape isnāt the only thing we know of him. We also know that James welcomed Sirius in his home when the later had nowhere to go, we know that James accepted Remus for who he was and became an Animagus to help him, we know that James befriended three outcasts without caring about how uncool they were, from what family they came from or what disease they had to deal with, we know that James was ALWAYS disgusted with pure blood supremacy as evidenced by his reaction when Snape calls Lily the m-blood in front of him. We know that when Snape was busy joining the Death Eaters fresh out of school, James was joining the Order and fighting against Voldemort from the start (a war that as a pure blood he could have stayed entirely out of). We know he defied Voldemort three times and lived to tell the tale, we know that he died throwing himself between Voldemort and his wife and child without even a wand to try to give them time to escape. James was a good person who wasnāt always nice and grew out of his bullying way.
Every characters aside from Snape always describe the Marauders as this generation Fred and George (who by the way also did a number of questionable things, such as shoving Montague in the vanishing cabinet, feeding Dudley their toffees or turning Neville into a bird). Were they always nice? No. Did they bully Snape? Ā Yes. Where they still good people? Yes. James included.
Snape wasnāt a good person, he never was, he never grew out of his petty high school quarrels, James did. Both were assholes when they were teenagers. One grew out of it, the other didnāt. Itās as simple as that.

Rest stops on highways are liminal spaces where the veil is thin and nobody can tell me differently
Explain
The explanation is that liminal spaces are in between places that bridge Here with There, so in fairy tales we often have the Fairy Ring, the Forest Clearing, the Sudden Misty Foggy Forest, the Bridge, the River, graveyards, in some cases
We also have a ton of american urban mythology around famous roadways and sites off the sides of roads
Archetypes like these occur to mark the places in the world where the veil goes thin and humans can have extra-worldly experiences, out of the ordinary way of living
So why wouldnāt transient spaces like rest stops where everyone is just passing through from one place to the next, never stopping for too long, not be a liminal space where spirits frequent, too
Especially since nobody would know if they were real or not
Ok but this speaks to me
I always feel like something isnāt quite right at rest stops
I once slept though three gas stations on a road trip, and the second the car started to slow to turn into a rest stop, I was basically wide awake.
My mom and I were on I-90 in a blizzard once and pulled off at the first exit we could find. Turns out that if weād gone even a mile further, we would have happened on a 49-and-counting car pileup, and that 90 was closed for MILES. How we found an unblocked ramp was a matter of great debate, but where this gets weirder still is that at the bottom of the ramp was a closed truck stop and an open church full of teenagersāthey went for youth group, the blizzard started, and they were stuck until the snow stopped. They fed us leftovers from their potluck dinner, prayed with us for safe travel, and when the snow let up they saw us on our way.
Three days laterāSundayāwe were traveling back and decided to stop at that church to thank them. We found it thanks to the truck stop, but this time it was the truck stop that was open and the church that was closed. Neither of us remembered it looking so decrepit on the trip down, and granted we saw it first at night in a snowstorm, but youād think weād have noticed the boarded-up windows. So we asked in at the truck stop.
The church had been abandoned for ten years. And yet I still had one of their youth group programs under my sun visor, very clearly labeled for the previous week.
To this day Iām sure we crossed dimensions somewhere on I-90, and thatās how we stayed safe. You could tell me itās because the truck stop was a liminal space and Iād 100% believe you.
I donāt mind when this post goes around again because sometimes I get stories like this
this husky is mad because he wants to take a bath but isnāt allowed to
let my poor baby take his bath
If y'all really knew. If y'all really knew what utter drama queens huskies are this wouldnāt surprise you at all.
This is my life.
Literally my husky is the same way. Heās only a few months and heāll cry to go back outside after being in the house two seconds.
I once ran out of my house in my pajamas at 2 in the fucking morning because I heard a dog screaming like it had been hit by a car. As Iām pelting towards the road barefoot I see an open garage with two people standing there and a husky in the back of a truck. I slowed down and asked them if that noise had been their dog.
Heavily embarrassed they admitted that it was. The reason for the godawful tortured sound the dog had made?
āWe took his running harness off.ā
And that was the moment I vowed to never own a husky.
I frequently pet sit for a friendās husky, who is completely normal and unremarkable for her kind with one crucial exception.
She is dumb as soup.
(You didnāt hear that from me: her owner thinks sheās a genius, bless him.)
Anyway, my dog Tribble thinks Arya the husky is one of her very own adopted babies, so she stays with us fairly often. Reasons I have heard this dog dissolve into a screaming, wailing meltdown include:
I followed my buddy up a mildly steep hill and now sheās gone and I canāt figure out how to get down
That one cat wonāt be friends with me even though all the others will
I hopped up on the sofa and the hardwood floor next to it is much more confusing than the laminate I have lived on since I was two months old and I donāt know how to get down
Iām mildly bored and my buddy yelled at me when I tried to bite her neck for the zillionth time
I want to play with that potted plant but you said I couldnāt
Iām overcome with joy because you took me on a walk to the hardware store
I want that biscuit but I forgot what sit means and now Iām frustrated
I havenāt seen you in two weeks and I forgot you werenāt dead and Iām overjoyed
You are not petting me enough
You are not petting me at all
I got lost four times in five minutes on the off leash trail and now you wonāt let me off again for a while
Thereās a brush and I need it
You made eye contact with me and didnāt immediately drop everything to pet me
Sheās a very good dog, and sheās a sweet dog who is never offended by anything, but the screaming has singlehandedly ensued I will never, ever, ever own a husky. I like having functioning ears too much.
To be fair, you and your friend may both be right: huskies, like border-collies, are just intelligent enough to develop Exciting Cognitive Neuroses, much like a toddler, which frankly dumber dogs will skip because they donāt actually have quite enough extra cognitive space to think up ways to be utterly fucking ridiculous.Ā
I kind of suspect this is going on here in part because of the dog being so very specifically upset that the one cat wonāt be friends, despite all the other cats being friends, and also the overcome-with-joy bits: youāll notice theyāre very similar to what makes toddlers randomly cry for no reason.Ā
Where a bulldog doesnāt care about the difference between laminate and hardwood, a husky is just smart enough to get VERY CONCERNED ABOUT HOW THESE ARE SUBTLY DIFFERENT AND POSSIBLY IT MEANS THAT GETTING DOWN WILL BE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE AAAAAUGH! and get hysterically anxious about it.Ā
āSmarterā, in animals as in humans, does not actually always meanĀ āmore sensible.ā XDĀ
I was feeling very lonely this evening and now Iām laughing down to my belly so thank you for this post
How much must Luke Skywalker be freaking out right now?
Can you imagine?
You are moping on your island of self-imposed exile, and then this girl shows up.
Sheās flying your best friendās ship. The ship that Han thought he lost for ever. The ship that was stolen and passed through so many hands that he was sure heād never see it again. The same ship that took you away from home for the first time.
Sheās accompanied by your personal droid. The droid you left behind and abandoned. The droid that C-3PO was sure would never be the same again.
She holds out her hand and sheās holding your fatherās light saber. The sword you were sure was lost forever. The light saber that you dropped down a bottomless air shaft on a gas giant thirty years ago. The light saber you knew you would never see again.
You look up and you see her eyes. Maz Kanata says that if you live long enough, you see the same eyes looking out of different faces. The girlās face is different, but those eyes are the same. You know those eyes. Theyāre the eyes you thought youād never see again.
And thatās when you know it.
Youāre screwed.
They say sometimes the Force works in mysterious ways. Sometimes, the Force will send you little signs. Subtle clues.
Other times, the Force will just beat you repeatedly over the head with a gigantic neon sign that says:Ā āYou canāt run away from your past anymore, Luke. I wonāt let you. Look, here is your past come back to haunt you. Now deal with it.ā
You have no idea how much I adore this post with my whole being
I like the idea of the Force sending Luke little signs over the years that itās time to return to his loved ones, gently increasing in intensity as he ignores them, until it finally gets fed up and shoves the events of Episode 7 into motion, finishing with a flourish of HEREāS YOUR NEW APPRENTICE, SPACE HOBO.

thereās an educational trivia game at the citadel on the exhibits on different planets called āDog or Not?ā that shows pictures of various four legged mammals and asks if theyāre a breed of dog.
it was mainly for kids to learn about the diversity of earthās flora and fauna but it became popular with adult aliens too and had to be shut down after almost causing no less than three diplomatic incidents.
they brought it to the nexus and itās caused two more so far

Shepard lovesĀ āDog or Not?ā. The human crew never misses a tournament airing. They get it on a vid screen in the mess hall and all crowd around. Some people bring blankets and pillows. Some make snacks to share. Eventually it becomes like a Superbowl party.
Dog or Not becomes a sort of inside joke on the Normandy, one that the non-human crew members still kind of get - theyāre always invited to the viewing parties and sometimes sit in - but donāt really understand. Tali especially doesnāt understand when a snickering Shepard elbows her and, pointing to a varren being taken for a walk, asks,Ā āHey, Tali - dog or not?ā
āThatāsā¦thatās a varren, Shepard,ā Tali responds, bemused.Ā āYou know what a varren is.ā
Shepard is still giggling, and Kaidan, who heard the exchange, joins in.

Shepardās head whips up and they stare at him for a full five seconds before breaking down. Garrus has to half-carry a wheezing, crying Shepard back to the shuttle. Jackās eyelashes are wet from her own mirth.

Theyāre driving full speed over the scorching desert of Tuchanka. Theyāve just called Kalros, the mother of all thresher maws, to deal with the Reaper destroyer in their way. All faces are pressed to the windows to see the fight.
Kalros bursts from the sands with an unearthly screech and tackles the Reaper. The two grapple in the sands, both representing the might of organic and synthetic, respectively.
āGarrus,ā Shepard says in a low, awed voice.
Garrus has been around Shepard for too long notĀ to know when theyāre about to make a joke.Ā āShepard, I swear on all the spirits of Palaven -Ā ā
āThatās the biggest dog Iāve ever seen.ā
Garrus quietly regrets all his choices that led him to this moment, then sighs.Ā āWhich one?ā he returns.
Headcanon that Sera is increasingly frustrated that, despite all her attempts to prank Vivienne, Madame de Fer remains completely unruffled because sheās from the Circle of Magi where it is a rite of passage for the apprentices to prank the senior enchanters. It puzzles me when people cite LOTR as the standard ofĀ āsimpleā orĀ āpredictableā orĀ āblack and whiteā fantasy. Because in my copy, the hero fails. Frodo chooses the Ring, and itās only Gollumās own desperation for it that inadvertently saves the day. The fate of the world, this whole blood-soaked war, all the millennia-old machinations of elves and gods, comes down to two addicts squabbling over their Precious, and that is precisely and powerfully Tolkienās point.Ā
And then the hero goes home, and finds home a smoking desolation, his neighbors turned on one another, that secondary villain no one finished off having destroyed Frodoās last oasis not even out of evil so much as spite, and then that villain dies pointlessly, and then his killer dies pointlessly. The hero is left not with a cathartic homecoming, the story come full circle in another party; he is left to pick up the pieces of what was and what shall never be again.Ā
And itās not enough. The hero cannot heal, and so departs for the fabled western shores in what remains a blunt and bracing metaphor for death (especially given his aged companions). When Sam tells his family,Ā āWell, Iām backā at the very end, it is an earned triumph, but the very fact that someoneĀ making it back qualifies as a triumph tells you what kind of story this is: one that is too honest to allow its characters to claim a clean victory over entropy, let alone evil.Ā
āI canāt recall the taste of food, nor the sound of water, nor the touch of grass. Iām naked in the dark. Thereās nothingāno veil between me and the wheel of fire. I can see him with my waking eyes.ā
So whereās this silly shallow hippie fever-dream Iāve heard so much about? It sounds like a much lesser story than the one that actually exists.
+1 You know how Frodo leaves Sam with the legacy of the quest - the job of bearing witness to what happened - and the duty to finish and protect his writings? Tolkien lost all but one of his friends in WW1. He was founder member of a literary club at school - the TCBS. There was a larger group and a core of four. They all stayed friends, they kept writing and sharing their work with each other. And they were almost all killed. One of them, Geoffrey Smith, wrote this to Tolkien in 1916. My chief consolation is that if I am scuppered tonight ā I am off on duty in a few minutes ā there will still be left a member of the great T.C.B.S. to voice what I dreamed and what we all agreed upon. Ā [ā¦]Ā May God bless you my dear John Ronald and may you say things I have tried to say long after I am not there to say them if such be my lot. And that was his last letter. Thereās something eerie about the way he seems to have pegged Tolkien as an eventual survivor.Ā Samās survival (and his emergence as the true hero of the book) are beautiful because theyāre suffused with loss, because theyāre not the grand conquering heroic narrative that on some level wasĀ āsupposedā to happen.
Has to be one of the best passages of a book Iāve read in a long time
