had to share this
In every way this is set up to be a joke like any other short video, it even uses the trope of main character in a wig to represent their mom, but it isn't funny at all. It's just sweet and nice
I NEED A SICKO… im holding out for a sicko till the end of the night ..and hes gotta haha and hes gotta say yess at the window with a look of delight
Just so we’re clear, if I point out that you did something racist, that’s not the same as me thinking you’re irremediably terrible. You did a racist thing.
You think you don’t do racist things, homophobic things, etc? You do. I caught myself in fat phobic and homophobic lines of thinking/speech just this morning. I’m fucking gay married. Nothing disqualifies you from acting in a way that reflects the society you exist in. We are obliged to fight it. Why not fight it in honesty and with camaraderie?
To my international friends: If you ever wonder why Americans are the way they are, just remember that 1/3rd of all US citizens are in a cult that teaches them to suppress the activity of their prefrontal cortex, particularly when it comes to doubt, critical thinking, and differentiating emotional responses from personal values.
1/3rd of Americans are Evangelical, and Evangelical Protestantism is a cult. We just don’t think of it as one because it’s so normalized. However, it follows the B.I.T.E. model of cult dynamics.
Evangelism teaches its followers to always maintain states of bliss and ecstasy for Jesus. What this does is condition the brain to always operate out of less-evolved parts; areas that are responsible for more primal emotions like euphoria, anger, and fear. Because of how we’ve evolved to survive, the brain will actually shut down our higher functioning—including critical thinking skills—in favor of these primal emotions, when they’re active.
Always feeling bliss = never questioning or feeling doubt. Evangelicals may actually fear the thoughts that do originate from their higher brain-parts because they think it’s the devil tempting them away from their religion. They’ll engage in self-indoctrination techniques to make this stop.
This creates a cognitive dissonance so great that many Americans have no separation between how they feel and what they believe. This is really bad because their minds have literally no defense against undue influence. They’ll vote for the dude who hyped them up enough. They’ll buy into the conspiracy theory that excites them the most. They’ll side with whatever gets the best reaction out of them, and getting a rise out of people is super easy to do.
Things like financial insecurity and low employment make this worse, too.
And just to be clear, this kind of conditioning can happen to anyone, regardless of their intellectual capacity.
Cult conditioning has nothing to do with how smart or dumb people are. You can condition literally any brain with the right time and environment.
Counteracting undue influence is a skill, and like any skill, it needs to be taught.
Cult experts frequently point out that the smarter people are, the more susceptible they are to this once the initial hooks are in, and the harder they are to deprogram. This is because while this kind of conditioning does not rely on intelligence, the ability to rationalise does -- the smarter someone is, the better they can rationalise what they already believe, so if they’re committed to following their feelings, a smart person is much better at making it seem (to themselves as well as others) that they’re actually using logic and reason rather than making ad-hoc justifications after the fact.
Also, people who know (or believe) that they’re smarter than average tend to assume that this makes them harder to fool, conditon, or lie to. Which makes somebody much easier to fool, condition, or lie to.
So I am from the US but now live in Argentina, and as The American(tm) I often get reasonably asked the question, "Why are Americans, you know, like that?"
The best and most immediate answer I could come up with, and the one I've stuck to, is telling people that America is a country defined by being a haven for cults and religious extremists since its inception. And people are always like "god that makes so much sense."
But you know, the wildest thing is if I tried to tell any given American this (which I have) chances are they'd be like, "No way, that's absurd." And I think the thing is, if you're an American and have lived most or all of your life in America, this is just your normal. But when you live somewhere that is less saturated with religious dogma, cults and anti-intellectualism, it's readily apparent.
Adding to this: Nationalism to the point where it becomes cult-like (or just straight up a cult you decide! :))
Example: All schools elementary to High school are required to do the pledge of allegiance and stand for the flag.
Builds a culture around constantly being loyal to "your" country, not matter what, every day.
At the end of chapter 7, if you ask Sans if you can hang out wuth his brother now, he'll just tell you to go back and play Undertale and then the game crashes. Trust me im topy foxes
Chat, is it considered “abusive roommate behavior” to release a raccoon into the living space after you have asked your roommate for months to please clean up their messes (they do not pay any of the mortgage)
For context, when I used to live alone I would do something called “Princess Time” where I would do an initial sweep (to remove any significant hazards) and then I would release a raccoon into the living area and clean. This helped because I would 1) feel like a princess and 2) the raccoon would bring attention to things my ADHD brain had decided to ignore and I’d quickly clean that stuff up.
So like, if I’m expected to clean the house now, I will be doing it in the way that is most effective for me. And anything that has not been cleaned up after months of having sit-down talks and sending reminders and being promised things will change, might be deemed “trash” by the trash panda and thrown away.
We haven’t done since we moved into the house, because I didn’t want to cause my roommate or their cats destress or have their things destroyed by a raccoon
I am a raccoon biologist and one of the few people in the state allowed to take in captive bred raccoons that had been possessed illegally. The raccoon in the photos is Moonshine, but she is currently at the animal sanctuary where I work as I had been quarantining multiple new intakes from an abuse case. I still have two males (Rum Tum Tugger and Electra) left in my home enclosure as we are getting them neutered and then hopefully sending them to an AZA accredited zoo.
I wanna make things very clear that underneath all the whimsy, I am a trained professional.
Those vibes are likely because I’m the original creator of Dashcon and my personality has not changed since 2012 lmao
Not shaving and not wearing make up are literally nonbehaviors. They’re a complete lack of action. But doing nothing is considered masculine because women are not allowed to just be. this goes double for trans women.
who remember vine 😂 that shit was funny or not, depending
I'm starting to feel like some of you guys don't actually have that good a grasp of what a data center is or what it does
"We need to get rid of data centers" says the tumblr user who has a career doing gig work via cloud apps
Well, I know pretty well what a data center is, and you are wrong.
You don't need data centers to serve Tumblr. Or your gps maps. And for sure not to use a gig jobs app.
You need a server, indeed. That server is basically a computer that needs to be somewhere with a good internet connection. If the site or app has a lot of usage, you may need several of them, rarely more than the lower two figures. That's it.
"the internet we know" doesn't rely on data centers. Data centers, as we know nowadays, basically were invented by Amazon, who started selling them "as a service" maybe 15 years ago. Before that, companies used to, well, have their own servers. Often in their own office buildings. Sometimes in MUCH smaller facilities dedicated to host servers.
But the modern concept of data server? That is needed mostly for data mining and selling processing power as a service, so shitty startups can try to invent the next torment Nexus without needing to hire people who actually know how to work with physical servers nor spending big money on hardware.
But most of the apps and websites you use everyday? Any shitty laptop could very well be used as their server and support a couple of hundred concurrent users without breaking a sweat.
Honestly, they are just needed for the worst parts of the internet.

You can just decide to buy a cane and start using one whenever btw. And it's awesome
If nothing else you're gonna be massively pissing TERF Kathleen stock off so that's a huge win right there. Do it out of spite 🥰
It would be so awesome if her shit article makes several people get their first mobility aid. Direct opposite of the effect she wishes she had yknow
Look into rollators too, they're amazing
I know that sometimes the hesitation to use mobility devices is about how it looks, both aesthetically and in terms of 'am I a strong person, worthy of existing'.
Canes come in a HUGE variety of colors, styles, materials, and ways to decorate it. As long as it's the right length, sturdy enough for your weight, and has a non-slip tip there's a good chance it'll do for you*.
Additionally: there are a lot of assholes that don't want you to take care of yourself this way. People who use accessibility aids despite the social pressure not to and their own internalized ableism are powerful people.
Additionally additionally: You are not taking anything away from anyone else when using your own personal cane or rollator. You're just making it easier for other people to exist while using them.
Most importantly: Anyone who thinks accessibility aids are bad for you is a person who is not good for you. Fuck'em. *For tumblr contrarians: if you need something more specialized than the kind you see in the drug stores, you'll know it. Plus, those can also look cool.
Also, I'd add: Having a cane doesn't mean using it all the time, if you don't want it to. True of any mobility aid; you get to set the bounds of how and when to use it. My cane comes out any time I'm traveling, or will predictably be on my feet for long stretches for multiple days at a time. Most days, my bad knee isn't so bad that going cane-less will cause anything more than mild discomfort at worst, but stretches of multiple days, the wear adds up to pain, so using my cane helps prolong and push off that threshold.
Some days, even when I am traveling, etc, I'll know that the cane will be a bigger inconvenience, and I budget additional wear for those days so that I can go without it; I'm lucky enough that it can be optional. But I'm going without it because of factors like "I need my hands free," etc. You kind of end up learning the "tradeoff math" over time.
Without a cane, three days of a convention would lay me out for a week or two; pain would start a day and a half in, and I'd push through it or miss out on stuff I wanted to do. With a cane, I can get to the end of a four-day con and definitely be feeling the discomfort, but know that appropriate nursing of it will get me back to a comfortable state in only a few days.
You know that thing would eat you if you died, right? *pointing to the false image of you that others perceive*
Reblog if you are a human rights extremist who believes that all humans are equal and has no sense of loyalty to nation states.
I do think the Hank Green AI thing makes it abundantly clear that if you have ADHD or any other mental illness and/or you are prone to addiction you need to avoid AI at all costs. This shit will rope you in, and if you have a mental illness that say, starves your brain of dopamine, you're gonna be extra susceptible to that. I won't use AI for a lot of reasons but one of the big ones is knowing how it would fuck with my ADHD and bipolar. Like yes, it's bad for the environment and giving money to rich scumbags and runs on plagarism, but even more than all that, it's straight up not safe at all and you really shouldn't use it if for no other reason than to protect yourself from whatever the fuck it might do to you.
