My doctor recommended not checking my phone before 10 (I wake up at 7), because of how cortisol production works and affects your body. I rarely manage it, but it's nice to know there's a medical possibility that doesn't involve ignoring things or being in denial.

I'd made peace with the idea that the illusion that kids can't read anymore is just me getting old and becoming the grandma who pettily complains about the young generation the way every older generation does about the younger generation. It's probably not as bad as it looks, the same way the things our parents complained about us wasn't nearly as bad as it looked then.

But looking at those links you share, it feels like it might be a little more than just the older generation grumpily tearing into the younger generation. Is it really that disproportionate compared to what generational traits our parents chewed us out for?

If it's phrased more as "Attention spans are shrinking!!!!", that's a Kids These Days rant.

If it's about stupid educational fads leading to underprivileged kids disproportionately struggling with reading as adults in a way that keeps them powerless and less likely to oppose oligarch scum, that's a real pattern.

It's "TikTok automatically rots your brain for sure!!!" vs. "TikTok is programmed to be more addictive and more destructive to critical thinking than the things we put up with in my generation".

People aren't stupider now, but there are some challenges that lead to worse mental health and potentially worse critical thinking and reading skills. Insert rant about old-school internet vs. algorithms and the panopticon here.

So... like 70% Kids These Days, 30% shit is actually worse now.

I'd frame it as "What are young people the victims of that's leading to this symptom?" if you want to see how much is crotchetiness.

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
