especially now with all the bullshit going on in Kansas, in Texas, in Iran, with Israel and Palestine, this ICE shit, this Epstein shit, it is essential to remember that evil and violence is not the natural state of humanity. this is not what humanity is like. if it was, there would be no reason to be disgusted or fight against it. most people are good and decent, and are victims of this, and by reducing it to a "carte blanche humanity is fucked anyway" you are casting aside the good, decent, loving people with rich inner lives who these cowardly fucks think are disposable

Refusing to stop caring is an act of rebellion. I'm sorry the world is so fucked. Things are awful and I'm scared too, but I absolutely refuse to let them convince me that there's no hope.

There are multiple chapters that are set in hospitals where the characters are attempting to recover from injuries that never fully heal. I must once again stress that my experience in WWI was perfectly normal.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence lies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

Vinyl records are circular because it's an efficient use of space: the grooves that encode the music are laid out in a spiral on the disc, so that the needle only has to move as far as the disc's radius to read the entire thing. Before this clever idea was thought of, the grooves were instead laid out in a straight line, and every LP was a narrow rectangle more than a thousand feet long. I actually learned a fun therapy trick for this!

The statute of limitations on arson is 6 years.

So whenever I remember an embarrassing or shameful thing I’ve done, I ask myself if it was worse than arson. If it wasn’t, and it was 6 or more years ago, I forgive myself.

Also just the comedic shock of going “well, that was a stupid and mean thing I said, but 6 years is the statute of limitations on arson” helps.

As a teacher, it profoundly annoys me when people take on this educational philosophy of exclusive practicality. Everything we learn must be justified by "when will we use this in real life." What a dull, incurious view of life these people have.

You only need to know the science necessary for cooking, or maybe the chemicals in cleaning supplies. You will never be in amazement at the building blocks of the world. You don't need to know how stars are formed; you can't even see them where you live. You just need to know the geography of the land you live on. You will never see anything beyond your lot in life. Why learn complex mathematical equations to test your mental skills? You only need to know how to add and subtract when your boss gives you a paycheck. Why learn history - those people have nothing to do with you - you need to learn how to fill out a tax form.

And English class? Everyone knows that books aren't real life. Your boss at your job will never ask you to identify the theme, so you don't need to know how. Humans have composed literature for as long as we've been able to speak, but that's all going to end with you. You only need to know how to do your job. That's "real life."

Just learn something for the sake of knowledge and stop complaining that I'm trying to educate you.

So many people seem to think my anger in this post is directed at students who make these complaints. No, for two reasons:

1) They're teenagers. They just say shit to me all day long. Also they're my students so I love them very much.

2) I don't get this complaint from students. They tend to ask for more poetry and fun activities.

I GET THIS COMPLAINT FROM ADULTS. American culture wildly undervalues public education, and EVERYBODY is a critic with their hot take about how to fix the education system. And they all seem to think the children yearn to learn tax paperwork and not Shakespeare. A lot of them think it was oppression they had to take a class they didn't like.
