We need to stop attacking woman and men that come forward with sexual assault and rape allegations. It’s not an easy thing to admit, that you were in such a helpless state with nothing but your fear and pain, while someone violates your body and mind. Then to feel the shame and hopelessness after. The anxiety and panic when your mind takes you back there over and over and over. You question all your decisions that day that led to your attack. You wonder how could I have prevented it. You begin to feel guilty and confused. It’s easy to say go to police, report it. Not all people have that courage. It’s something they have to be able to come to terms with on their own. This was a trauma, this was a violation of the worst kind. Please give them a chance to be heard, to help them heal. We cannot start accusing victims of lying or making things up. It does a disservice to true victims. Only about 2% of all rape and related sex charges are determined to be false, the same percentage as for other felonies(FBI).

Or else more and more women and men will continue to hide their shame and their truth. When that happens, their assaulter will harm someone else.

It’s time to support the victim and hope truth will out.

Today a woman made me cry. I went to the movies with my sister, my niece and my nephew. Emma, my niece was getting a little upset from being tired, so I took her out of the theater and tried rocking her to sleep. This woman, she walks by and smiles, then says to me “happy Mother’s Day”. This stranger, who knows nothing of my struggles to conceive, my battle with endometriosis, and the current ongoing treatment for IVF, took the time to wish me a happy Mother’s Day while holding my niece. I was so overcome with sadness, but at the same time appreciation. She gave me hope. She makes me want to fight even harder to have a baby of my own. Thank you mam, you made me feel special on a day not meant for me.
