I guess I should actually start writing short articles about radical feminist / terf history on tumblr. I don't know where else I could properly summarize the history, so tumblr it is. a rant about radfem vs. trans ideologue history and how it's been forcibly rewritten by men galavanting as the "most oppressed" type of person you can be, a misogynistic man appropriating womanhood.

This is a neglected subject in the community because the history is sparse, inaccurately represented in a cursory google search; the true details only found while digging through old lesbian feminist periodicals and forum posts by elderly radical lesbian feminists, but I'd trust all that over TIM bloggers and their minions any day.

What happened early on in the second wave (mid 70s-80s) echoes today heavily. The issues they had early on with TIMs claiming to be lesbians and feminists, it sickens me how as soon as it was relatively acceptable to, men started to claim womanhood and lesbianism. The history of mister "Beth Elliott" makes me sick and is reminiscent of today's EIi ErI*ck.

The 1973 West Coast Lesbian conference in San Francisco California is said to be the first lesbian conference of its kind (in the world, perhaps). Many lesbians and feminists in general flocked to the Bay Area to meet likeminded women. There had been a gurgling debate transpiring in the months preceding the conference surrounding a transsexual male identifying as a lesbian in San Francisco. Beth Elliot, or whose real name is Elliott Basil Mattiuzzi, was notorious in the Bay Area lesbian community for creating a dramatic schism in the San Francisco Daughters of Billitis and having worked on a few copies of the Lesbian Tide. He was accused of rape by at least one lesbian attending the conference.

Many lesbians begged the conference organizers, including Jeanne Cordova not to invite him and let him perform, but their pleads were ignored. He has been accused of sexual assault and years-long stalking of notable lesbian-feminists in the Bay Area, these accusations span decades. Bev Jo, a young lesbian feminist, was one of the women known as the Gutter Dykes. Bev knew Beth before he identified as a lesbian, and claims he sexually harassed her and begged her to date him when she was 19. She also claims he elected the similar name of "beth" because he was obsessed with her and wanted to "become her" (something very reminiscent of autogynephilia, cough cough).

Here's what Gutter-Dyke separatist Bev Jo, who knew Elliott personally pre-transition, had to say on what happened in the comments on Dr. Em's articles on the subject.

SyIvia Rivera is revered as a trans, LGB and women's right's activist all while being a misogynistic, lesbiphobic hateful man masquerading as a woman. He actively disparaged and tried to silence lesbian feminists early on in the gay liberation movement.

It makes me sick every time a young person calls me a colonizer and tell me that I need to be grateful for "trans people fighting for and winning your civil rights, you owe it all to trans people." And that fucking drives me mad, because I ask them every time--

"can you please tell me what rights, where were they fought for, when were they, how were they, and who the fuck got them for me that was trans?"

And they can never tell me a single incident besides "Marsha P Johnson, SyIvia Rivera, and stonewall! They won your rights!" Which, first, is false. Marsha (a self-described GAY MAN) is quoted as saying he missed the riots entirely that night, he most definitely didn't throw the first stone or brick or whatever.

It's noted that the culprit of the riots was likely Stormé DeLarverie, butch lesbian and drag king performer who started throwing things (bricks I think) at the cops. Yet the trans rights activists rarely acknowledge her? And when they do it's to assign her a trans identity post mortem, it's stomach churning.

This truly feels like living in an insane world and you're the only person who is capable of a single rational thought. We keep repeating history but it's only getting worse. Lesbian-only, female-only spaces are nonexistent. We're threatened with violence and loss of employment if we speak out. Goddess, it's so exhausting. Take me away from here. Rant over. Well, fairly certain OP meant nonbinaryism is built on that, not hippie culture.

But, also, I would do a little feminist reading about the "free love" movement if you think that was not a male-supremacy movement at its core. Much like liberal feminism promotes now, "free love" made women believe that having random sex all over was empowering. The only true beneficiaries of the movement were men. They espoused many, many of the same basic ideas as liberal feminism does now, especially in terms of "polyamory", sex slavery, etc.

The fact too that the hippie movement was incredibly intertwined with the significant rise in "communes" and cults isn't easily dismissed either, and look at gender roles in a lot of those cults. It was to abuse women (sexually) and exploit their labor.

Here is something chilling if you think the hippies free love movement was a feminist dream:

Now...

Did hippies have other good things? Of course. Much more than genderism has. They were actively and directly anti-war. They cared about the environment much more. They were not as strict on judging people by capitalist value rubrics. Their near-constant psychedelic drug use made them more gentle, in theory, but also much more experiment and daring artists than the dumbass genderbending cartoon garbage people do now. They genuinely did seem to want better community for all humanity.

But they were, ultimately, like most white western liberals, middle to upper class kids, disillusioned by "the man" (capitalism and war), who did a lot of sitting around obsessively navel-gazing, smoking drugs, and writing bad songs. (There were many good songs, too. But lbr, chances are all those dudes strumming a guitar in their crash pads weren't that music we think of when 60s and 70s hippie music is brought up.)

Contrary to genderism, their protests usually made a difference to society as a whole. They fought for issues that the regular Joe could care about too: conscription, war/imperialism, nuclear power, drugs, corruption in politics, animal rights, etc. But like genderism, they were far more a cultural movement than a political one. Also like gendies, hippies "constructed a sense of marginality". It was not authentic or inherent to them, but they designed themselves to be a marginalized group. There was no actual oppression of white, middle-class 20-somethings. But they needed to feel like there was. (There's more to be said about what drove this, and arguably all youth in that time period had a lot of identity and societal trauma shit happening.)

A little further reading because I am actually shocked that (radical) feminists have no background about the "free love" movement. I mean, I thought every feminist would see through that immediately. So, if you have never thought about it, here's a quick primer.

There is far more written about this from a feminist perspective, but I just googled it quickly. If you're curious, there's plenty to find. It's actually one of the first hypocrises and lies about female liberation that I was taught about in my first feminist philosophy course.

I have no doubt that nonbinaryism/kweer culture will be looked at exactly how people (rightly) view the hippies: As primarily a white, middle-class subculture of spoiled kids who delusionally thought they were changing the world for the better, but were really just appropriating others' oppression and culture, changing their clothes and hair, and gleefully allowing men to exploit women under the superficial guise of "progress".

Or, again, a majority white, middle-class group of young people with the undeniable luxury of being able to ‘drop out’.

When you read Andrea Dworkin say she’s never been more afraid then when she was speaking to a group of lesbians that were pissed that she called herself one despite not being one that’s her literally admitting she’s lesbophobic. I’m reading Mary Daly’s Gyn/Ecology right now and less than 30 pages in she says she doesn’t believe in homosexuality, that when she uses Lesbian with a capital L it’s about women identified women (the ‘correct’ usage) and when she uses it with a lower case l she’s talking about the “male-distorted version… women who relate genitally to women”. That’s worse than Dworkin comparing us nazis.

Why should I ‘separate the art from the artist’ when it comes to “older” or “published” or “brilliant” radical feminist women? Why should I consider the fact that the foundation of the second wave was the silencing of lesbians and the theft of our culture a ‘disagreement’ and not a deal breaker?

Why should I not recognize that for all the great writing they’ve made they were the foremothers of the anti-lesbian identity politics bullshit we’re currently drowning in?

And when you hear about how there were REAL lesbians who had major issues with these women why is it that you can’t find any names? Any writings? Why were the most lesbophobic and appropriative radical feminists the most successful radical feminists? Why are successful radical feminist lesbians almost nonexistent? Doesn’t it seem odd to you when you consider that the movement was built and maintained by genuine lesbians?

Any lesbian that decides not to read works by women that hate, fear, silence, and deny her very existence isn’t ageist, she’s sparing herself the suffering that comes as a side effect of being part of a distinct oppressed class of women.

And here’s a thought. Why can’t older women learn from us? Maybe even admit they were wrong? They can give up Lesbian and take fucking wlw.

Is THAT good enough for you? Now do you understand why it is radical feminists want nothing to do with you monsters? Trans activism is nothing but the newest manifestation of the patriarchy. It’s men’s rights activism in a wig. And at this point, anyone who sees all the shit they’ve done and all the shit they’re doing, and still supports them, is just as fucking bad as they are. And remember, this barely touched on the lesbophobia (and homophobia in general) that runs rampant under the guise of trans “activism.” This doesn’t even go into the fact that trans”women” starting to take the very few places in businesses and governments reserved strictly for women, or them rolling back hard earned rights the suffragettes fought tooth and nail for. This doesn’t even touch on the fact that young girls and women are now losing out on desperately needed sports scholarships to universities, losing hard earned and long standing titles, all because trans”women” are taking over real women’s sports. If I were to go into all that, this post would be 10x as long as it is now, and the 35 minutes I’ve spent on this is too much as it is. So please. Tell me again how this sort of stuff “never happens” and how radfems are “just as violent”.
