Every single year without fail, I get very confused when I see Americans start posting about Mother’s Day. Not because mothers shouldn’t be celebrated or I don’t get why they are (a lot of them should and I absolutely understand why, I certainly celebrate mine), but because I always forget that the US celebrates Mother’s Day on a different day to the UK.

So I’m sat here wondering why I’m seeing Mother’s Day posts a couple months after I’ve celebrated Mother’s Day. Without fucking fail. Every single year.

Okay, so two unrelated consumptions of media have collided in my head.

Today, I spent most of my day rewatching the original Jurassic Park trilogy + the first Jurassic World film with my mother.

Unrelated, I had a bit of fun afterwards singing The Hand by Annabelle Dinda.

But now all I can think about is an edit of Ellie Sattler to The Hand. But alas, I am not an editor nor do I currently have the time to learn how to. So how, I turn to the internet to at least have my vision be heard. But, if anyone does an edit like that or knows of one like it that’s already been made, please let me know!

unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.

Well, not all free, but pretty dang close - for example, my library does charge to use the 3D printers... but we charge very little, pennies per print if you use our filament and nothing at all if you use your own.

You ever see something innocuous, minding its own business on the clearance shelf at Michael’s and before you know it, it takes over your life for a few weeks?

So it was with this desktop greenhouse.

I took it home and after taking an appropriate time to “season” my idea in my mind (read: a month or two) I set to make my vision of a mini botanical garden a reality.

I started by removing the heavy glass panels and building a raised floor above the latch. I wanted to use the base as a foundation on the building.

I wrapped the foundation in plastic stone textured flooring (meant for Christmas villages) and built a pond at one end of the same. I then gave it a more realistic paint job and designed a rough layout for my plants and displays.

I also knew I wanted to make the ironwork significantly more intricate, but I wasn’t sure how just yet…

Up next - PLANTS! I went wild making all kinds of plants. Some were specific species and some were more conceptual.

I made several trees with polymer clay and moss, cacti out of beads and flocking, cattails out of raffia, hot glue and coffee grounds, and giant monstera leaves out of paper and wire.

This part should have taken me a long time, but it really came together fast. I loved finding ways to replicate natural shapes and patterns using bits of this and that.

I did make adjustments to my plans as I went like eliminating benches in favor of a simpler overall design.

Then I needed to fill my pond with water. For this I used resin. Lily pads were added to the top layer, and I wired in simple LED fairy lights. The batteries are kept in the box under the foundation.

In a weekend frenzy I added more plants, metal (paper) steps, new (plexi)glass windows, a roof, wrought-iron vines (paper again), doors that open, and a hose reel disguising the latch. Suddenly, a project I thought would take months was finished…

I love my desktop botanical garden. Right now it sits on a simple lazy Susan in my office. But I’d love to get it a proper display box to protect from dust.

yes i spent my entire life until a few months ago assuming green eyes were an urban legend

"what about all the fictional characters with green eyes" thought it was a trope like with anime protagonists having naturally purple hair

i found out by watching Desperate Housewives (one of the actors has green eyes and it threw me off)

(i had never watched Desperate Housewives until that point bc i assumed it was reality tv, of the same genre as Real Housewives Of Metropolitan Areas franchise)

i still haven't seen green eyes irl, i am simply aware now that they actually exist

I assume this is what people think of when they imagine green eyes. Whether they look green or not is mostly a lighting thing from what I've seen. I have gray eyes that can look green in the right light.

Green eyes are also the rarest eye color period, so I don't actually blame you for not knowing they existed at all.
