I was never really a fan of the artstyle of Ash in SM (he got hit the hardest, literally everyone else looked fine), but I do think the art change was necessary to fit the overall atmosphere of the Alola region--as cool and clean as XY/Z (really just the modernized version of the original art) looked, the art just didn't really suit Alola.

Alola was really chill up until the time you start getting to Po Town and the Ultra Beast plot:

There's no League or Gyms at first, the main quest is just the traditional coming of age journey kids undertake in the region, not really some quest to be the best like usual.

The main rival is perhaps our friendliest yet. He mostly just wants to snack on malasadas and make his grandfather proud of him.

The apparent villains are some disaffected kids and a dude who became a meme literally upon his introduction. They don't really have a grand goal aside from disrupting the island challenge, compared with every team that came before escalating the threat they posed. (I figure most of us probably called the twist with Aether, but it's a "what we as the player know vs. what our player character knows" situation.)

The general feel of the region is the player is on a fun, island-hopping vacation adventure with the new friends they made since Hau and Lillie stick pretty close to you the entire journey. Ash himself was initially even there on vacation.

Playing thru Alola, it was obvious to me why they changed the art, so I never really minded the change that much. (And I think it helped that I wasn't really watching for Ash himself at that point, it was Lillie who had my investment that series. 😅)

funny this comes across my dash because I've started rewatching this series in particular, because it's my FAVOURITE OF ALL TIME.

BUT it's so disingenuous to compare it based off screenshots??? That one in particular? The entire anime is drawn so FLUID AND ANIMATED. from the people and to pokemon, it was clearly animated with style instead of stock charas and general unmoving faces and whatever. Uno? I absolutely adore it because they went out of their way to put effort in.

It's also just? Fresh? That ash got a new outfit. Why not compare misty and Brock? They're there too! They get more love put into their movements than they ever did in their seasons! Which is the important part! They add so many little things that make the world feel alive. From ash running off with Pikachu grabbing his hat FOR HIM because he forgot it, to background interactions that needn't be there. But they are anyways.

A lot of emphasis on how pokemon and trainer mimic each other. I saw a scene where the togedemaru kid ran off and it looked like togedemaru was hanging off his belt? Like they actively were like. Yeah toge can't run fast so he STICK HIMSELF TO HIS TRAINER WHEN HE RUNS OFF because it's EASYER. THIS ISNT EVEN TALKED ABOUT YOU JUST SEE IT HAPPEN ITS ANIMATED IN THESE TINY SCENES.

Anyways this is like three episodes in the whole season has things like this. I don't gaf if they think shading makes it all. Less for more effort in other places means more than screenshots in an ANIMATED piece of media. If they want a picture they can go draw one!

Ok guys I've been thinking about it whenever I go for drives about the domestic situations in which if pokemon were real recently, and looking at the Australian farms and bushlands I came to the realization ponyta and rapidash would probably 1. Be foreign to our lands. And 2. Would be illegal to own at all bar perhaps a zoo. Even then likely not.

It's making me wonder how many if any fire types would be allowed from overseas, and what we would have in replacement. Like surely we would have our own local fire types but no others would be allowed so they might be rare? Or only certain types that don't have open fire tails and such would be allowed and you would need a special permit for them??

Anyways I drew this in the spirit of that thought because I love my Espeon.
