Hard Vs. Soft Class Systems

This is world building stuff. It's important to keep in mind that this is way more nuanced, especially in real life. That nuance could also help with whatever you're making, so keep that in mind. Hard Class Systems: Think aristocracy, caste systems, royalty. You're born into this, besides a few exceptions, there's really no way up (but a lot of ways down). In these, your biology MATTERS what family are you from? Where are you from? And if you're illegitimate? Or even the child of a noble and a commoner? You're done, everything is over before it started. "B-But my society has a hard class system and they understand that you can't control that stuff!!" (I have genuinely had someone say something similar to me, hence why I'm writing this actually, I have a point to prove) Then why is it a hard class system? I could accept this in a Blend or Soft System (both below) but you can't have hard class systems without something that gives the upper class a way to set themselves apart from the rest of society. And it's almost always genetics that do this (I've actually never seen hard class systems done without genetics involved but I'd love examples if anyone has one). Soft Class Systems: Basically what the American Dream was trying to sell us; if you work hard and put in enough dedication you have a shot at going higher in the ranks and being wealthy. In practice, these usually are much more of a scam. If you wanted you could make this promise of earning what you deserve more concrete, but I don't think most people reading this want to form utopias. Unlike Hard Systems, these can get more diverse, less genetically involved. You can have the occasional generational wealth but these are the guys that earn it. They usually don't leave behind a fortune for centuries and their monetary empires crumble after about 2 or 3 generations, 4 if we're stretching it. The Blend: This is stories where a commoner can be really rich or have some type of societal power but they're still below nobles and such. These 'commoners in power' can work in many fields; maybe they're a military officer that rose in the ranks; a scientist who is well-trusted by the elites; or someone that has control over a powerful criminal syndicate. It's set apart from Hard systems by the fact that the common people have more rights to opportunity. And it's away from soft systems because aristocracy still have something that this society believes sets them apart from everyone else.

There's this one mutual I have that always leaves tumblr saying they're never gonna go back and every few months I always see them come back. I started following them a month after they first made their account and I watched their blog's gradual descent into chaos and honestly I never wanna look away from that train wreck. I don't even know why they followed me back after I followed them, it was so random. And now they've just made their most recent comeback and talked about going to Italy and seeing the pope?!?!?!😭 I love them tho, I hope they never change tbh

Please don't ever stop making art or writing wips that are gruesome, horror, other things like that. Don't let the Internet sanitize how you wanna tell a story. Channel your rage into your art and keep going and don't give up

i wish i was the one to have to sort through your clothes. i wish i was the one to have to lay on my side of the bed and adjust to your absence. i wish i was the one to have to slowly forget the sound of your feet on the stairs, the brush of your hand on the wall, the creak of the railing as you gripped it, rounding the corner of the first floor landing.

i won’t have to walk through the door and realize the house smells less like you each day. i won’t be the one to leave the bathroom, with your toothbrush and cream and pills, the way it was before you died for months until a friend insists i clean it. i won’t be the one to walk through the house like i’m wading through time on pause, a still life of you. the wicker shelf in the breezeway you liked, the mirror you would glance at on your way out of the house.

i wish i had to forget the way you breathed while you were sleeping next to me. i wish i had to walk into the living room and forget the sight of you sitting in your favorite chair. it would kill me, i’m sure. but i would welcome that slow death. i’m nothing more than an almost stranger, some flicker of the past that blinks in and out like static. i want to have meant more. i want to be the one to deal with the paperwork, the insurance, the attorneys, the cars, the bank accounts. she doesn’t deserve to be the one who mourns you. but who am i? just someone you knew when you were fourteen. someone who was in love with you and never told you. someone who goes back to an apartment and does not have to sort through your clothes. someone who does not have to forget the sound of you humming while you fold our laundry.
