I know I say this a lot, but it’s crazy to me that the atla fandom has any sort of tendency at all to portray zuko as rational, levelheaded, clever, knowledgeable, studious, meticulous, practical, reasonable, logical, or otherwise intelligent. while he does possess certain strengths, his greatest are his grit and tenacity, resilience built up through a lifetime of failures born of a tendency for heedlessness, rushing into choices without thinking through the consequences or weighing his options whatsoever. he has his moments, to be sure, but that’s largely because he happens to be far luckier than he gives himself credit for. oh, and while we’re at it, he’s also certainly not stoic, aloof, even-tempered, mature, or quiet. the fact that he’s foolhardy and impulsive and reckless and dramatic and loud and emotionally expressive and myopically driven and strong-willed are sort of his defining qualities, actually. they’re also the traits that make his character actually endearing, so im not really sure why people seem so determined to negate them.
op's tags are too true:
#thinking again abt how he literally had aang's exactly address and instead decided to kidnap appa. #which means he's either illiterate or an idiot #at least one of which is certainly true
If you’re a Non-Muslim and you see a Muslim praying in public, could you please not pass in front of them?
Go behind them, but not in front. 👍
Oh, signal boost! I didn’t know this.
Okay, but also: if you see a Muslim praying in public and they have something in front of them, like a purse or a bag or something like that, you can pass in front of them, but pass in front of that object.
it’s called a sutrah, and it’s meant to act as a physical barrier between the person praying and someone who might happen to pass in front.
Also, if you did this and didn’t know, please don’t beat yourself up over it. Now you know! Muslims aren’t supposed to pass in front of Muslims praying, either, because prayer is communication with God and you don’t want to break that connection.
Spread culture, respect customs, be good people. Simple as that.
Didn’t know this.
Reblogging again
THE AMOUNTS OF REBLOGS THIS HAS JUST MAKES ME SO HAPPY
S I G N A L B O O S T
Reblog forever !
Similarly, if a Jew is saying the Shemonah Esrei prayer (whispered, moving only the mouth, standing facing east with legs together) don’t go in front unless there’s a barrier.
Signal boost!
practicing self care less out of self love and more for the sheer logical reasoning of it’d be kinda stupid of me to expect myself to be able to function without proper maintenance
“oh i don’t deserve rest and relaxation, i haven’t done enough, i haven’t earned it” and my car’s breaks don’t deserve break fluid because they aren’t breaking well enough to earn it. that’s what you sound like!!!!!
If you do not schedule time for maintenance, your equipment will schedule it for you
stop fucking using the word psychotic to describe bad behaviour and violence already god fucking damn it
oh my god i'm so tired psychotic does not mean violent it does not mean angry or erratic. it refers to a person suffering from psychosis, a loss of touch with reality that includes hallucinations and/or delusions. psychotic people are not inherently violent and y'all need to understand how much stigma you create when you again and again incorrectly use the word psychotic without even thinking about it
would appreciate if non-psychotic people could reblog this
i've always been dogshit at pottery on a wheel because i have weak noodle arms and can't hold my hands firmly in place to center the clay but i finally realized the root issue was that my legs are SHORT since i have the limb/torso proportions of a dachshund and i couldn't brace my elbows on my legs, so i put bricks under my feet and now i can sort of do it!! i've tried to learn twice in the past from TALL people but had a revelation when i watched a medium size guy throwing.
The moral of the story is: don't give up, maybe you just need bricks
This doesn’t include the best bit of the whole thing - she found the Twitter thread!
This is like one of those romance novels where people bond over accidentally writing each other emails but better.
Like Pride and Prejudice but instead of the love interest getting dissed for his toxicity and then reforming, it’s just two people bonding over dissing a dead toxic asshole.
10/10 would recommend
My sociology professor had a really good metaphor for privilege today. She didn’t talk about race or gender or orientation or class, she talked about being left-handed.
A left-handed person walks into most classrooms and immediately is made aware of their left-handedness - they have to sit in a left-handed seat, which restricts their choices of where to sit. If there are not enough left-handed seats, they will have to sit in a right-handed seat and be continuously aware of their left-handedness. (There are other examples like left-handed scissors or baseball mitts as well.)
Meanwhile, right-handed people have much more choice about where to sit, and almost never have to think about their right-handedness.
Does this mean right-handed people are bad? No.
Does it mean that we should replace all right-handed desks with left-handed desks? No.
But could we maybe use different desk styles that can accommodate everyone and makes it so nobody has limited options or constant awareness that they are different? Yes.
Now think of this as a metaphor. For social class. For race. For ethnicity. For gender. For orientation. For anything else that sets us apart.
Hello, all.
I am the origin of the above post. And as many of you have likely figured out, the story I shared with the world in spring 2013 was heavily dramatised for comedic effect.
Until then, I had shared the story with mostly just IRL friends. They loved the story, always asking me to tell it again. And at the time of posting, they were the majority of my followers on Tumblr. I posted the story for them, to make them laugh. I didn’t even tag it.
No joke: I posted, went to dinner, came back to find it all over my dash reblogged from people who were Not Me.
Since then, I’ve seen it shared on Facebook, Youtube, Reddit, and others. My own mother shared it on Facebook without having the slightest idea (I still haven’t told her). The share that inspired this post the most, is whenever it crops up on r/thathappened. Because when it gets posted there, my reaction is primarily, “I mean, it did...but you’re also not wrong.”
The original experience happened in 2009 or 2010. While the clash between Gay Avenger + Creepy Guy did in fact happen in my proximity, I was nowhere near attentive enough to catch all the details in-progress. I was on the dance floor and hating every second of it (fact: I stopped going to clubs shortly after this, because I despise the experience), suddenly some guy is shouting and flipping out and running. I ask some people wtf just happened (I thought maybe it was some violent crime because I always assume the worst), they fill me in with some basic details to ease my anxiety, I move on.
Later, I fled the dance floor because I hated it there, and retreated to the upstairs area where a bunch of Elder Gays were singing Alanis Morissette karaoke. One of them gets to talking to me, I mention what happened. He spins stories of other such incidents, comments that many clubs he’s been to in his Many Years have a dedicated Gay Avenger (although he didn’t use that term) who takes it upon himself to repel creeps, and shares a few additional stories. Over the years, as I shared the story with others, I was told other similar stories that had happened at different clubs. All of these secondhand stories, I assume, were likewise dramatised.
What ended up posted on Tumblr was, essentially, the amalgamation of my experience, plus the stories shared with me afterward, plus my own storyteller flare. The whole thing was exaggerated and given some “oomph” to make my friends laugh. Because that’s who the target audience was: my friends, who I wanted to make laugh.
And then the whole train clapped.
I suppose the entire reason I’m even making this post is: I want to set the record straight. What happened in that story was not “real” in that it was a word-for-word account of an actual event. It was “Inspired By True Events” in a very, very Hollywood fashion.
But it was not wholly fiction. It has its origins in reality--as, I believe, many quintessential "Tumblr Stories" do. I had never anticipated the fictionalised account would gain the traction that it did; but it happened, and I want to put the reality out into the ether. Because it's important to me.
Triple decker yelling at me
the thing i find so frustrating about the batman doesn't kill thing is that it’s not JUST in relation to batman. bruce not wanting to have the power of life and death in his hands, on his shoulders, is REASONABLE. (i dont agree cuz of the whole concept of vigilantes but irrelevant)
what makes the beef between him, jason, and the joker so insane is that jason gives him 2 options, "kill him, or let me do it."
bruce has the option to stand aside, look away, and he doesn’t. he hordes the responsibility as if the problem isnt jason's, but his own. He makes the deliberate choice to insert himself in a way that does irreversible damage. and he does it more than once. he does it each and every time jason's morals and actions dont align with his own.
instead of standing aside, bruce injects himself, and he chooses the side that allows him to feel both correct and "righteous" anger -- and lashes out. and not only does he lash out in a way he would say is too far or out of line for anyone else, but he doesn’t openly acknowledge, regret, or apologize for his actions. because nothing compares to the ultimate evil.
and you could say him being a bystander is just as bad, but bruce is a bystander in his daily life, REGUARLY.
bruce has the kind of money and influence that is life changing for hundreds. the exact kind of money and influence that could eradicate homelessness, or at the very least, hunger, but he doesn’t do that. he chooses instead to "help" how he wants to dish out help. every project he takes on eother has to benefit batman, or go thru batman.
either way bruce reminds me of that one quote about elon musk where it's like, "he wants to save the world, but only the way he wants to save it"
bruce's hypocrisy is a neverending tragedy
Bruce is the authority figure you went to as a kid to stop the bullying, and they offered platitudes but never actually did anything to truly solve the problem. It's only when you take matters into your own hands that he takes it seriously, and now he's looking at you with such disappointment because you stooped down to their level or whatever the fuck and you're the one in trouble.
Bruce is the outside party that you think you can trust, but when he sees you lash out he takes your abuser's side. He barely has to be manipulated, he already believes in the logic of "I can hurt you all I like, but if you hurt me back you're just as bad as me."
He's worse than a bystander, he's complicit.
Bruce didn’t mean to slice Jason’s throat and if he did mean it, it was only to disable , it wasn’t lethal and the wound would’ve been treated, and though that didn’t happen it wasn’t Bruce who sealed Jason’s fate but Joker who set off the explosion, and anyways Jason didn’t actually die he comes back in other comics.
Except none of that matters. It matters for the validity of UTRH as a Batman story that Bruce has deniability sure, but does it absolve him? UTRH says No. At the end of the day Bruce would rather attack his son than let his murderer die. Bruce thought he was refusing the choice but the lesson of this tragedy is that refusing to pick one over the other boils down to choosing the other.

"What if jason todd wasn't a murderous bastard when he came back to life and was instead normal" What if Batman was fucking competent, put Joker into a coma and threw him into a literally inescapable prison, didn't take on another Robin, didn't act like a pos to Dick and di NOT start victim blaming Jason before his damn funeral? What about that?
Jason Todd is a kid who grew up too fast and now isn’t quite an adult but isn’t a child either. Jason Todd is a kid taken from an unsafe environment and told you will be safe here but wasn’t. Jason Todd was the good kid that got handed a bad kid reputation. Jason Todd thought being robin gave him magic and yet it’s what got him killed. Jason Todd died and returned to a world that had seemingly moved on. Jason Todd was a kid that wanted to save his mother turned into a cautionary tale. Jason Todd was a kid doomed by the narrative by the writers and by the audience. Jason Todd is a kid who didn’t get to grow old and an adult who doesn’t get to move on.
Something really interesting to me about Dick and Jason's relationship in the Battle for the Cowl - Countdown - Batman and Robin (DickBats and Damian) era is that Dick has a specific kind of respect for Jason that no other character does
This is in large part because Dick is called upon to be the narrative's Threat Detector, he's the one with the most experience dealing with all threats and especially Jason shaped threats. So whenever Jason crawls back out of the woodwork and everyone else is calling him a whimp, a stupid thug, and some variation of homophobic slur...
Dick is the one going, "No, no. This is a guy who has gone into multiverse level threats and come out the other side covered in blood that was not his own. This fucker is dangerous, and smart, and we have to take him seriously."
And it's really interesting that he does this consistently and in storylines where the narrative does not really support Dick's assessment of Jason. I'm adding to this that Nightwing Annual where he simply trusts the fact that Jason would own up to having killed someone and the fact that out of all the Bats, Jason has fought Dick by far the most (at least if I'm remembering correctly)...
I think I'm ready to call it! I am putting the Red Hood down as a Nightwing villain instead of a (Bruce Wayne) Batman villain. That core protagonist-antagonist respect is just there for them in a really important way.
how must the Dick -> Jason Robin switch have looked to the Gotham Rogues. it's not as if they did a formal 'attention, Robin has quit his job and will now be operating as Nightwing' announcement. like after a certain point it must have become like a Known Thing that periodically Batman gets new sidekicks. but that first changeover must have messed w people's heads right??
like. you are a B-list Gotham Rogue. You haven't seen Robin in months. You've asked around and no-one else in the circles you move in has seen him either. You're starting to get worried but you aren't sure if you have the kind of relationship with the Batman where it would be appropriate to ask after his sidekick's wellbeing. Every time he shows up Robin-less you get progressively more stressed out.
you are a B-list Gotham Rogue. Batman has Robin again but he is very clearly a different, significantly younger boy. This suggests that the OG Robin being gone is a permanent state of affairs. You're starting to fear the worst. You're like 85% sure Robin died and Batman quietly replaced him with a different child in the same costume. You've been asking around to see if someone killed him but no-one will admit to knowing anything. You really want to ask but you don't feel comfortable asking the Batman if his sidekick got murdered, especially not with the new kid right there.
#i don’t know anything about Jason’s early robin days #so I don’t know if JASON knows if Robin the og was alive either #like clearly it’s a touchy subject for Batman #i imagine if he didn’t know dick was still alive he would come to the relatively reasonable conclusion that nightwing killed him #like #Robin disappeared. nightwing appeared nearly simultaneously. Bruce refuses to talk about robin one and he has Complicated Feelings about #nightwing that can be interpreted as anger #some villain with more balls than the rest asks Jason Robin where robin 1 went #and Jason’s like ‘uhhhh I’m pretty sure he died and I think nightwing might have done it?’ #literally the next day he learns dick is alive and is nightwing #this is really unlikely to have happened but it’s really funny
gfkhgfk ok but that gives me the image of the Rogue in question being like *loading up on weapons* ok I may be a villain but I draw the line at killing teenagers, that's just messed up, I'm going straight over to Bludhaven to make that bastard pay ):<
& then they proceed to have just the Most confusing series of interactions w Nightwing before the two of them figure out what the hell is going on
Ok but what about three years later when all this actually happens to Jason?
you're a B-List Gotham Rogue. You haven't seen Robin 2.0 in a couple of months, but you're not too worried, based on previous experience you figure he's just moved on to do something else. You ask around to see if anyone's run into any new costumed vigilantes who might be him and -
- wait he died? for real?
you're sure?
ok who was the son of a bitch who did it, that's messed up, we're gonna find them and - oh it was the Joker? oh yikes. oh man. that's just awful. I hope he didn't - with a crowbar?? oh my god oh no no-
