taking any college course on societal issues in the united states is just like: *realizes its bc of reagan* *traces the cause back to reagan* *discovers the original policy came out of the reagan administration* *finds factual inaccuracies ignored by the reagan administration that are then used to push policy* *finds statistics that show the severity of the aids crisis as well as the beginning of mass incarceration of poc were caused by reagan* *hates reagan*
A West Bend farm says it was told to start dumping tens of thousands of gallons of milk per day because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the first case of coronavirus confirmed in Wisconsin, the impacts could extend further than just health.
This is capitalism's vast irrationality and inhumanity in action. Markets and The Economy⢠matter more to capitalism than the concrete distribution of resources according to tangible human need.
Resources exist in abundance -- give them to people. Housing sits empty -- give it to people. The rules of the feast table should apply to our economic system -- no one gets seconds until everyone has gotten a plate.
We stand at a crossroads in these chaotic times: socialism or barbarism! The ruling class repeatedly chooses the latter. We need to organize and choose the former!
John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath
People have been reblogging this with some points that seem fair to call attention to -- milk expires quickly, farmers are locked into a situation where they have to throw stuff out, etc. But the larger point we were trying to illustrate in the original post was that this system compels people to do irrational things in the name of market laws. We have a surplus of goods around us and yet we arbitrarily build up social constructs (property laws and exchangability) to prevent people from comfortably living off of these goods. Goods are produced and given away only if profit can be extracted from the process. These aren't immutable laws of nature, though, and most of human history hasn't operated this way. Not to suggest that things were just peachy keen in slave empires or feudalism -- class stratification in general is a big part of this, not just the particular market laws of capitalism. But it's still important to realize that these irrational all-pervasive market forces are a comparatively recent invention and that these historical moments of crisis demonstrate how truly anti-human production-for-profit and class inequality truly are. We believe that the economy should be more broadly democratized and managed on a for-need/for-use basis by the people actually impacted by the outcomes; that would entail workplace/community democracy, as well as a new emphasis on direct distribution of goods (rather than having those goods wait around to be bought).
Goods sit unused -- give them to people. Make sure everyone has the means to live a comfortable life. These seemingly obvious goals are perpetually blocked by billionaires and profit-sharks, who'd rather see people sleeping on the streets in the middle of a pandemic than have their bottom lines suffer any hit. Things are fundamentally top-down; we believe it is a reasonable proposal to start moving things into a bottom-up direction. That requires choosing socialism at this crossroads of human history.
Another reminder: capitalism artificially imposes scarcity.
Queer punk/ anti capitalist moodboard
this is indeed a moodboard
wanna know why?
itās my current mood, and iām bored
Blogging this tweet because this explains SO MUCH about the mindset of pretty much all the folks Iāve known whoāre against single-payer, itās not even funnyā¦
Thisā¦.
This never occurred to me. Not once. That Americans are against Health Care because they think it actually costs tens of thousands of dollars for a broken arm, hundreds of thousands for a complicated birth, millions for cancer treatment.
Because theyāve never known anything different. The idea that a broken arm is only a couple hundred bucks; a complicated birth a couple thousand; cancer treatment only tens of thousands; all easily covered by existing tax structures.
This explains a lot. Ā And itās a good example of what I was talking about in my post on scarcity being used to prop up ableism ā always question the idea that a resource is genuinely scarce. Ā Even if it seems obvious that it is, quite often thatās the result of careful manipulation and misconceptions that youāre not even aware of. Ā
And never think youāre too smart to be fooled by that kind of thing, it doesnāt work like that. Ā Similarly, donāt think people who are fooled by something are stupid. Ā Nobody can have all the information about everything, and nobody has the time and energy to investigate and put together conscious conclusions about every piece of information theyāre given. Ā It doesnāt take being stupid, or even just gullible, to believe something like this.
I currently live in a country without free medical care and still, itās enormously cheap compared to the USA. An American expat wrote a piece for our English language paper about how she paid more for parking at the hospital than giving birth to her baby thatās pretty interesting:
https://grapevine.is/mag/articles/2016/01/06/healthcare-in-iceland-vs-the-us-weve-got-it-so-good/
Yesterday I had to go to the hospital cause I injured my eye, Iām frankly dreading what the bill is going to be, but what made me balk was being told in the pharmacy that my insurance was denied for the antibiotic eye drops and itād be over $100 out of pocket. So I didnāt get my eyedrops.
Iāve had these same drops before living in the UK. They cost me seven GBP.
Itās the exact same drug, same steroid, same strain of antibiotic. But somehow the US gets away with charging $100 for a generic non brand version of a drug which is easy to create and widely used. Itās downright robbery, but also a form of eugenics through poverty and class warfare. You keep the poor poor by making sure basic necessities remain unattainable and then you make it seem like the norm so no one fights it.
The rest of the world is not like this.
Eat the rich. Resist.
Itās downright robbery, but also a form of eugenics through poverty and class warfare.
THIS. THISTHISTHIS. THIS IS WHAT I KEEP TRYING TO TELL PEOPLE.
for the record:Ā
The US is expected to spend about $3.8 Trillion on health care this year. The UK paid Ā£129B, total, for healthcare costs in 2018/2019, which is roughly $170B. The UKās population is 66.4 million; the USās population is 327 million. Thatās a little less than five times the population of the UK. $170B times 5 ā rounding UP at every stage ā is $855B. Less than health care spending as it currently stands. In fact, weāre currently paying 440% more than that, out of pocket, and thatās with 20% of us currently going WITHOUT health care.Ā
Hereās whatās even more wild, conservatives and centrist Democrats love to talk about how Medicare for All would cost $34 trillion over 10 years (assuming costs donāt go down and that weāre still charged hyper-inflated prices), but what they fail to mention is that if we keep our private for-profit system Americans will spend $52 trillion over that same time period.
But since the itās not called taxes, itās automatically better.
[ID: tweet from dbpooper/@lonelydandruff: i just realised americans think their medicine costs as much as theyāre charged for it
which is in a reply to a tweet from Your Trusted Wizard/@Choplogik: i guess if i was an american & saw all the wildly exorbitant medical bills people get i would wonder how universal healthcareād get paid for]
i have reblogged this before, and i will do it again.
Fake solutions to illnesses thrive in countries that have learned to distrust their for-profit pharmaceutical industry.
People who think salt solutions or essential oils can protect them against covid (nope) are not the enemy. Theyāre struggling to find a sense of safety in a scary world when they no longer know who to trust. Talk to them as you would to someone who is scared and having a hard time.
Save your anger for capitalism and the pharmaceutical industry that created this mess.
bill nye has fucking snapped. if you say the wordsĀ āchinese hoaxā heāll personally teleport to your location, set you on fire, and tell you thatĀ āoh no boo hoo you canāt stop being on fire because it costs too much money to not be on fire guess itās just not worth extinguishing youā. heād stab an oil company exec with knife hidden under his light blue lab coat. that man has gone off the civility rails, he is absolutely living, i admire him fully, we stanĀ
Bill Nye has what feels like a valid anti-hero/supervillain origin story. Young, optimistic scientist dedicates his life to educating children about science, but then watch as those same kids grow up to ignore science and continue to destroy the earth. So in a fit of rage/act of desperation he activates Super ScientistTM mode and becomes his superpowered persona and starts killing billionaires in ridiculous over-the-top fourth grade science fair experiment related ways.
Tbh, Iād help him

when the quarantine ends we gotta get rid of capitalism for real. iām not even being like a funny relatable commie teenager for the memes or whatever. capitalism is literally destroying the human spirit. i believe in the goodness of humanity!! i rlly do! but capitalism has built a society that values profit and productivity over human lives and connection. fuck elections that donāt mean anything fuck american oligarchy we gotta value each other and help each other
I legit served a man at my last job who was fully covered in nazi symbols and shit. He was a proud actual real life nazi getting icecream in a family theme park and when he left I voiced my disgust to my coworkers on how security even let him in the gate wearing all of that. And you know what that bitch said? āWell some people are offended by your rainbow flag and you are allowed to wear it so he can tooā. Itās not the fucking same. Donāt fucking compare the two
Nazisā entire mission is to exterminate anyone whoās not exactly like them. Itās in no way comparable to āsome people are offendedā.
me:Ā āIād like to visibly exist without fearā
them:Ā āI want to literally kill these people so that they stop existingā
centrists:Ā āI donāt see the differenceā
Oh wow I guess my addition to this post got spread a lot. I just wanted to add in another piece of important information. I live in Orlando. The location of the Pulse night club shooting. I was wearing a rainbow pin on my uniform because 49 people in my community died in a hate crime. I will never forgive anyone who tells me that my rainbow pins are the same as a swastika
They're raping us, they're abusing us, they're killing us. From the 7 year old girl to the 90 year old woman. This has to stop now.
Tomorrow, we don't move. We don't do anything. In memory of all the murdered women who won't return to their families, to their schools, to their jobs never again. Because a man decided they deserved to die.
My heart is so touched to see all the thousands of women raising their voices and fists. The second photo is the walk on my city but around the country many other similar walks happened.
El 9 nadie se mueve! šš¼šš
holy fuck guys this is badass!!! godspeed, comrades!!!!
My class 10/10 lost the plot today. I donāt even know where to start or how to explain to their parents that I think theyāve all turned into tiny little rebels.
9:10 - we are studying a report about Chernobyl in guided reading. Several are looking at me gone out when I explain that nuclear power can be dangerous. āSo why use it?ā one asks. Why indeed. 9:12 - we are now discussing renewable energy. Several more express outrage and ask why the country doesnāt have to use renewable energy. Several more state that we should avoid pollution because it kills polar bears and stuff right, Miss? 9:13 - I mention that itās a complicated issue because of different viewpoints, and that certain people, say Drumpf, donāt believe in climate change. 9:14 - chaos. 9:15 - small child suggests someone murder Drumpf. I say that murder is both bad and illegal. 9:16 - the class have learned the word impeach and are shouting IMPEACH TRUMP IMPEACH TRUMP IMPEACH TRUMP while banging on the tables. 9:17 - headteacher comes in to see what is going on. Small child tells him quite angrily that SOME PEOPLE JUST DECIDE TO NOT BELIEVE IN SCIENCE WHICH YOU CANāT DO BECAUSE ITāS SCIENCE. He backs out of the room quite quickly. 9:25 -I have abandoned plans for grammar and the children are now writing persuasive pieces about Why We Should Use Renewable Energy.
The saga continued after lunch when we continued our WW2 topic work, learning about the holocaust.
1:35 - we are discussing Kristalnacht. The class are collectively outraged and appalled. One is in tears. 1:40 - āMiss, I fucking hate Hitler.ā thatās okay, but please express your hatred of fascism without the F word or Iāll have to ring your Mum again. 2:00 - small child who suggested murder earlier says āisnāt this exactly what Drumpf tried to do to the Muslims?ā Thereās a heady mix of realisation and outrage in the room. 2:13 - āRacism makes no senseā says a child, looking quite confused. 2:33 - āHitler would have killed me because Iāve got cerebral palsy, right?ā says a boy. He is tackle-hugged by a girl from across the table. I have to pretend Iām not crying. 2:34 - The rest of his table have made a pact to never let anyone hurt him. I am still pretending to be super chill. I am obviously failing as another child offers me a hug. 2:37 - I ask the children to look at nine examples of things the nazis did against Jewish people, and then arrange them in a diamond with what they consider the worst at the top. 2:38 - Mutiny. They all collectively decide to arrange all nine cards in a line and say that theyāre all awful things so they all go at the top. 2:39 - I tell them if they kind find a way to fit a line of all nine in their books then fair enough. Smart child suggests a circle. Everyone cheers. We have a break, and they go outside raging about Hitler, Drumpf, racism, prejudice and injustice in general. I am handed a very strong tea by my TA who congratulates me on my gang of angry eleven year olds. Faith in humanity both challenged and restored. Bring on tomorrow.
Would just like to add, this happens all the time with my group of 12/13 year olds. Anytime they can bring up Drumpf and rant about him, they absolutely will at every opportunity.
<3
Tfw 11-13 year olds are smarter than most republicans -.-
Oh my god I love these kids. Like, a lot.
(Also, as someone who did not have a battalion of able bodied peers to tackle hug me and vow to protect me from Nazis when I had that same exact realization, please tell all of those kids they are good small people and I love them. Thank you. š)
my faith in humanity has been restored
Wow, havenāt been on Tumblr for over 2 years now xD~ Iāve no idea if people are still following me here; migrated to other social medias by now like me xD;;.Ā I didnāt really just want to leave it like this though.
I was recently diagnosed with stage 4 fibrosis sarcoma cancer, and the doc thinks I got about 1-1.5 years left. I guess Iām really here to kindaā¦.leave my mark? These are just some of my work from the past few years I havenāt been uploading here :3
Iām more active on Twitter, Instagram and Patreon. Every bit of support helps <3. Iām not sure if Iām ever posting back here, but thank you guys so much for reading.
maybe someday, after capitalism gets destroyed, Oscars attendees will look back on this yearās Awards and realize the irony in the situation
