Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

more people could identify as asexual/aromantic if they not only knew what that label is but also knew about how wide the spectrum could be. because not every ace/aro person feels the same way and even people who DO have a general idea on what it means, could still be like "yeah no i cant be possibly ace/aro because i feel/do this and that"

what's up, coming at you as one of those dirty-minded smut enjoying asexuals handing out water at the orgy or whatever the fuck people say. anyway, lately i get this kind of insidious sense that people think of sex-favorable aces as the "cool" aces. like "hey don't worry man, i'm asexual but you don't have to do anything to accommodate it." And of course it's a spectrum/umbrella, people can be asexual and sex favorable, i know that from experience. But i worry it's also seen as the *more palatable* version of asexuality.

So here's the reminder that you are not weird or prudish or childish or mean if you don't want people talking about sex around you. You are not morally reprehensible or puritan or fascist if sex makes you uncomfortable or upset. if someone tries to make you feel ashamed of that discomfort, or pushes your boundaries on purpose just because they can, they're the ones in the wrong for not respecting you. Never, ever compromise yourself for the sake of people who think you're less than for how you feel and who you are.

people really do have such short memories about lots of things but specifically gay sex was a crime in much of the usa less than 25 years ago like i remember it and gay marriage wasn’t legalized until 11 years ago and i was a grown woman waiting to get my hair cut when i found out. on a beautiful june day!!!
