I like a lot of alternative music, punk, rock, nu metal, grunge, extreme metal, but also folk, musical theatre, classical, anything really. I really love music in general. I like DIY, books + gothic literature, witchcraft/demonolatry (and reading old grimoires on Internet Archive…)

This is mostly an art blog but I really just post about what interests me! Which changes frequently and sometimes doubles back on old things for a while.

I feel like the moment you start policing what is and isn’t “real art” in a subculture is the moment you value social status over the actual art. Once you start going “that’s not real metal” “that’s not real punk” you forget that art is art, and it’s unique to every person. You see it instead as a product that you can carry around and show off; hey I listen to ABC band and you can’t listen to XYZ because it’s not a real [insert-genre] band so you’re a poser. Like dude. ATP you don’t care about the music at all, you just wanna feel superior by gatekeeping your subculture.

Ok I don’t 100% agree with this point anymore but I still relate a lot to the spirit of it. This frustration is why I’ve done away with most subculture labels. I don’t listen to 100% any given genre, and not enough from any genre to really consider myself a part of it. I might listen to punk sometimes but don’t label myself as a punk. I might listen to metal but I don’t really label myself as a metalhead because there will always be someone saying “you’re not a real [xyz]” and it’s easier just to exist without using any of those labels. No one can exclude you from a community if you never claimed to be a member. I’m more comfortable moving sort of nebulously through genres and interests and subcultures. The only thing I can pretty solidly describe myself with is “alternative.”
