Must it always be bad boys with soft spots?
Can’t we get a couple empaths with middle fingers?
aro culture is listening to a love song but imagining it with characters in a non-romantic way, only to feel weird about it and wishing there was a song with the exact same feel but without the romantic connotations :\
reminder that a bunch of aros & aces like reading about romance & sex. it’s common to enjoy reading about things you don’t actually want to experience personally–for some people that’s action & adventure, for some of us it’s romance & intimacy
being oriented aroace is complicated because i still see myself as gay. like as an enby who identified as lesbian for YEARS and can still only see themselves building a life with a wxman... calling myself gay makes sense.
my mind is so used to thinking and seeing the world as a lesbian that even as i actively and fully acknowledge myself as an aroace person, i still see wxmen i’m aesthetically attracted to and think “ashsldjdkd i’m Big Gay 🤤”. because. well. i am Big Gay. just... maybe not the type of Big Gay you’re thinking of.
anyways, being oriented aroace can be weird sometimes.
✨Aroace things✨
Me: *feels a genuine smile coming on when watching my friend be themself*
Right brain: Is this romantic attraction?
Left brain: If that’s romantic attraction, then you are deeply in love with every close friend you ever had.
being a self-taught artist with no formal training is having done art seriously since you were a young teenager and only finding out that you’re supposed to do warm up sketches every time you’re about to work on serious art when you’re fuckin twenty-five
someone: oh yeah, do this exercise during your warm ups! it’ll help
me: my what
What’s up I have an actual college degree in art and I was never ONCE taught to do warm ups.
when i was in undergrad, it was kind of mentioned in and offhand way that we should do warmups, but we were never shown what that meant. And, y’know, we were young so it didn’t matter so much.
Being older now and having an art job it’s…kind of essential.
So: a quick primer for those of you who are like ‘ok but how do i actually go about doing this warmup thing.’
1) you may be tempted to do ‘a warmup drawing’ which is just a drawing that will take longer than it needed to and probably be frustrating and kind of bad because you didn’t warm up first. It’s tempting but always a trick your brain is playing on you! Do not trust!
2) warmups will vary based on what feels good to you/what task you’re about to do/what motor skills you want to practice. That being said, some good standbys:
a) circles. Just a whole page of circles on whatever drawing surface you’re going to be using, whether that’s your tablet or your sketchbook or a drawing pad on an easel. For these circles you should make sure that you’re drawing from your shoulder and not your wrist. In fact, you want to be drawing from your shoulder rather than your wrist most of the time! forever! your wrist is delicate please preserve it!
In order to ensure that you’re drawing from your shoulder, when you’re holding your pencil or whatever drawing tool you’re using, the only part of your hand that should be touching the drawing surface is part of the last two fingers–some people prefer the finger tips, but I tend to favor the first knuckles. Either way, the fingers should really be ghosting over the surface, providing guidance rather than support.
I usually start with big circles and then go to smaller circles and lines of ellipses, and then try to fit circles and ellipses inside other shapes i’ve already drawn as a precision exercise, but i don’t do that unless i’m feeling loose
b) spirals! i don’t always do spirals, but if i’m stiff and the circles just aren’t cutting it, spirals are a good fall back. I start from the center and work outward, going both clockwise and counterclockwise until i feel comfortable with the whole range of motion. Some people really care about getting perfect spirals but for me it’s all about making sure i’m comfortable with how i’m moving so who really even cares about how the spirals look. Not me!
c) lines! straight lines! in parallel! i do a mix of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. These are often more from the elbow than the shoulder, especially if I’m working on a smaller surface. For this exercise, I recommend holding the drawing tool perpendicular with the surface
d) connect the dots. This is a precision and accuracy exercise and takes two forms. The first is to draw two dots and then draw a straight line between them. The second is to draw three dots and draw the curve that connects them. This sounds a lot simpler than it is in practice. Take time to ghost over the line you plan to draw before actually committing to your line. (I don’t always remember where I picked up my warm up exercises, but I’m pretty sure I got this one from Scott Robertson. His how to draw and how to render books are very technical but also accessible and worth checking out)
e) cubes, spheres, cones, and cylinders. These help get your brain into a more volumetric space. I draw multiples of each, rotating the forms around, and I’ll often take the time to do some rough shading on at least a few of them
f) spidermans! This one is really good if you’re going to be storyboarding or working on dynamic poses. Just fill a page full of spidermans doing all sorts of acrobatics.
g) beans. I don’t do beans too much anymore, but I know a lot of people like it so I’m mentioning it here. Fill an area with different size bean shapes without lifting your pencil off the paper.
h) short medium and long line repetition. draw a short, medium, and long line on your page, and then draw directly on top of them 8 to 12 times, doing your best to exactly trace what you’ve already drawing. Repeat with a wavy line. I’m bad at this one, which means I probably need to do it more.
And there are lots more options too! Hit up youtube to see what other people recommend, put together your own go-to list, mix it up when you’re getting bored, etc.
This is a long list, I know, but I usually don’t take more than 10 to 15 minutes to warm up, and I can warm up one handed while I’m drinking coffee, so, multitasking hurrah.
Sometimes I’ll advance to a precision warmup and find that I haven’t loosened up enough yet; it’s totally ok to go back to an earlier exercise! Also, all of this has the added benefit of kind of ritualistically getting you into the drawing mode so even if I’m not feeling it before I start, by the time I’ve gotten to the end I’m usually Ready For Drawin’. Brain hacks.
so, yeah! that’s a lot of words, but! Warmups are important! Save your joints, take less advil, do better drawings!
Kieran: *looking through Milo’s shelves, reads sign and stops* I’m sorry.. does this say ‘The Not-Food shelf’?
Milo: *looks back* Yeah..?
Kieran: *furrows brow* Is the rest of this stuff food?
Milo: Well no.. That’s just the stuff that’s really not good eat on accident
Kieran: So why the shelf?
Milo: Well, it used to be where it could theoretically get it on something I might actually eat, and it took exactly one experience to learn that that kind of setup is a proper crisis
Milo: So I set up a shelf
Kieran: *purses lips* So.. poison shelf
Milo: *so-so hand* Ehhh, I guess
Milo: But I feel like poison is too broad a term to really mean anything at this point
Kieran: *smirks* So you called it not-food for specifics
Milo: *avoiding eye contact* Well no..
Milo: *quietly* but it’s a little bit funny..
Finished this drawing of my character Milo, and I’m really happy with how it turned out so I decided to share it here☺️
And I think we all have fun with goofy idiot characters who actually know what they’re doing
honestly doing errands w friends like grocery shopping or helping them find new clothes or just going anywhere for no other reason than to keep them company while they get what they need is such an underrated wholesome good experience like yes let me help u pick out cereal and put fruits in bags bitch i LOVE u ❤️💛💚💙💜💓👩❤️💋👩💞🌟💫💕💖🌱☀️✨💗🌺❗️🌸🍃🌷🌹🌻💗❗️❗️
Greetings wonderful citizens! I’ve had this in my drafts for ages since I couldn’t think of a caption, but now I’m too tired to care, and that’s probably a good thing because perfectionism SUCKS
Now that Logan and Roman are done, I’m probably going to draw Virgil next, so keep an eye out for that
I’m still not sure if I want to give his design royalty vibes or Disney villain vibes or what, but I’m thinking an ominous cloak would suit him nicely. If y’all have any ideas for that please tell me because I don’t know what I’m doing
Pretty sure juggling is just a really impressive adhd fidget
Like, I wouldn’t be surprised if the first juggler was some neurodivergent person sitting there and tossing a stick repeatedly until they noticed it looked kinda neat
I’ve seen some people discussing what Virgil’s purple eye shadow represents, so here’s my take:
From what we’ve seen in canon, Virgil’s eye shadow intensifies the more anxious he is, as a visual indicator for how hard his core function is “kicking in” at any particular moment. But when we’ve seen this happen in the past, it’s always been anxiety tied to negative emotions. In the end card, while he’s still visibly keyed up, it’s due to a flood of positive emotions rather than fear or distress.
So it’s not that we’ve never seen Virgil truly happy on camera before; it’s just that in the past, we’ve only seen him happy/smiling in moments when he’s fairly calm, and his influence as Anxiety is less pronounced. So it’s really cool to see not just a different side of Virgil, but a different side of Anxiety: instead of prompting fear, it’s powering a figurative runner’s high: the fluttery, adrenaline-rush, oh-my-gosh-I-can’t-believe-that-just-happened feeling.
I just really like the idea that Anxiety’s influence doesn’t have to be muted in order for Thomas to feel happy—that Virgil can be up to eleven in moments of joy as well as turmoil.
What’s my gender? Uh, I dunno.. the not-girl one?
Or was it the not-boy one...
My dog ate my wallet because he’s an asshole, so I can’t double check, but I think I had a they/them in there, so let’s go with that
Conceal; Don’t feel
I don’t feel anything
I decided to sketch out the sides with capes, and Logan’s was giving me major Arendelle vibes, so I went full Elsa, and I did not look back
We need a gay Disney prince, and while Roman can definitely play the prince, I feel like this fits Logan quite nicely
I’m almost done with Roman now, but not sure which side I want to finish after that. I was also thinking about going into an all out fantasy or Disney Au. I could even do a fanfic or comic if that’s something you’d like to see
If you guys have thoughts, please send me some words about them, because I would love to make something out of this
ADHD be like
Me: *sigh* I forgot to go grocery shopping, and now I can’t remember which foods exist. I think I like crackers and the rest of my brain is doing the Macarena. Wait, I think I have a list! Nope, I lost my list. Look in pantry for boxes of eaten foods? NO! I took out the trash yesterday! That’s supposed to be a goOD THING TO DO WHY DID I DO THAT?!?!
Well meaning family: *looks up from phone* Have you tried being Neurotypical? I used to forget things sometimes, and that works great for me
I don't think the problem with 'stupid' people is that they're 'stupid'. I think the problem is whether or not they're willing to listen and change. Same goes for aggressive people or people with racist/homophobic/bigoted minds. It's definitely not ok to be an asshole but when you're an asshole who's willing to listen to others about how much of an asshole you are and actively put in the effort try to change the fact that you're an asshole then you're still cool. At least that's what I believe. The decision is really up to the person on whether they want to listen and I really think that's the difference between living a life full of hatred and continuing to open your worldview some more. It can take weeks or months or even years but if you can end up a better person then good for you
I am going to cry
Why? Nobody knows! It could be literally anything at this point, because I’m just a fragile Piñata of tears trying to pretend I’m just full of candy!
How You could use a designated ‘Destroy the Piñata Stick’, or heck, just grab that baseball bat that’s lying around, because even though it wasn’t branded as a gut punch, it certainly doesn’t mind provide it them!
Or you could just slam it against a random wall if you want to be both theatrical and efficient, because the point of Piñatas isn’t what you use to smash them! Only that they are made to be smashed!
All the piñata knows is that breaking is inevitable! Trying to escape your Piñata fate just means breaking at a really inconvenient moment and somehow still being surprised that you’re still a Piñata and that denial didn’t magically transform you into Not~A~Piñata.
“Receiving Gifts” People are my favorite
I find them so cute and sweet, so I’m always looking for them. They’re really easy to find, too. Just hand out snacks every time you see people you want to be friends with, and they’ll usually reveal themselves by the third interaction
Person who thanks me or politely declines? Noice, will be friends. very good. Conversation continue
Person who looks like they’re about to cry because I asked if they wanted a snack at the same time they said they were hungry yesterday? Yes! Found One! Will be receiving a pack of gummy worms every time I see them for the rest of forever
My bag is always full of snack packs of goldfish because I’m constantly looking for them. It’s my mission in life to never run out of snacks
Because these precious humans will look at me like I’m the world when I remember the kind of muffin they like or get them the special kind of hair tie that doesn’t tangle, and I LIVE FOR IT!
And like, the thing they do where they put their hand on their chest and give you this smile that’s mostly just them closing their eyes and pinching their lips back like they’re holding back tears and just holding it close like they’re so touched??? YES!! THAT!! I NEED THAT IN MY LIFE PLEASE AND THANK!!!
My love language is Quality Time, 100%, but I love my ever growing horde of Receiving Gifts friends and surrogate children more than anything. They are brilliant and wonderful, and I’m here to tell them that they are underrated and deserve every bit of love and kindness this world gives them
EVERY! LITTLE! BIT!
