are we serious
If you EVER think Anthony Head is anything less than an angel then youโd best remember that I have always been a huge fan of his and weโve always had a little contact over the years and he heard Iโd come out as Trans and was having a hard time and that I was kind of sad that the photos I had from conventions with him were of me with long hair and no binder and they were all signed to โSarahโ and so he invited me to spend the day with him at his farm and he picked me up from the station and we just hung out and had lunch and he insisted on paying and took loads of photos and had them printed on photo paper the same day so he could sign them to Jay, along with other photos of him as Giles and Uther and he literally spent five hours chatting with me and got all of the pronoun stuff right every time and then he dropped me off at the station, gave me a final massive hug, waved me through the ticket barrier and insisted I message him when I got home so he knew I got back safe. do you guys also have favourite The Characters in-law. like characters from media you know nothing about but you just kinda like looking at them when your mutuals put them on your dash
itโs been said before and itโs not even close to the worst thing but it sucks how our current robber barons are such philistines. like these guys arenโt even building libraries or concert halls. they canโt even pretend to enjoy art, and they donโt see any value in signaling that they appreciate art
this current batch of the fithy-rich is BORING. They're BORING. Oh you have a yacht that's bigger than anybody else's yacht but functionally no different from one of your fancy houses? BORING. You have yet another fast car? YAWN. You ate a burger but like, a special burger? whatever. FUND AN OPERA ABOUT ANOTHER RICH GUY YOU HATE, DIPSHITS. How about you put a concert hall with your name on it in every city in the US and fund their operations for the next decade, if you're so rich????? unless you're too poor to afford that????? How many people do you, personally, directly employ, and what are their salaries? Do you pay well enough to command the loyalty and willing service of any masters of their craft? It would be so easy to win the absolute love and adoration of the masses in this climate but no, they wanna build bunkers and play politics in order to save a few more miserable nickles.
Pick up your ticket for Pride!

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as โproblematicโ in class and our professor was like, โThatโs cool, but โproblematicโ doesnโt really mean anything. It means that the thing youโre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatโs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itโs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youโre trying to say that this is bad, but you donโt want to say โbad.โ Is that right?โ
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the โbadโ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, โIโm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.โ
Once we stopped calling things โproblematicโ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, โthatโs racistโ or โthatโs misogynisticโ or โew capitalism grossโ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, โUhhh... Iโm not sure whatโs so bad?โ and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canโt help but think of this professor being like, โGood starting point, now letโs get specific.โ I think when we have to commit to saying โthatโs ___โ it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weโre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itโs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatโs what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)
