The long-lost remains of King Alfred the Great have been found buried under a car park, investigators claim.
Alfred died in 899, and his bones were repeatedly moved. He was buried in Winchester Cathedral until 1110, when his remains were moved to Winchester's Hyde Abbey, where they were interred before the high altar between the bodies of his wife and son.
The abbey was demolished after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539, and the place was left in ruins.
In 1866, during construction of a workhouse on the site, the English antiquarian John Mellor excavated the area, found what he thought were Alfred's bones and had them reburied at nearby St. Bartholemew’s Church.
But in 2013, when archaeologists exhumed and carbon-dated the bones from St. Bartholomew’s churchyard, they proved to date from over 200 years after Alfred’s death - sparking Graham's interest and search.
He said: "Whoever’s bones they were, they weren’t Alfred’s. So, I decided to discover what happened to them.
"The quest has taken me 13 years.”
I've been rewatching the first 2 seasons of The Bear
And it keeps reminding me of the time I went to Chicago and asked my brother, who had lived there for like a decade at that point, where he went to get a hot dog. And he had no idea what I meant by "Chicago style". His excuse was "AJ [his boyfriend] doesn't let us eat junk food". And I got legitimately mad at this, like excuse me, it's an all beef hot dog with like 5 different kinds of vegetables on it. It is not "junk food". I mean there's a reason why they call it "dragged through the garden".
I also just don't like his boyfriend, so I took him to Portillo's and "let him" eat 3 of them.
So I saw some people remarking that they didn't understand why "liberals" are focusing on the disaster of the Reflecting Pool paint job, and ok so when you see stuff like that, I need you to remember we are dealing with a wannabe strongman. Anything that makes him look ineffectual, wasteful, and incredibly stupid-- you get that between your teeth and you don't let go. Especially *especially* when it involves laughing at him.
Also... it is funny. Except for the poor ducks, it's funny. Man lost a war to algae. His "American Flag Blue" is green and slimy and the paint is peeling off, and all before his big 4th of July show that no musicians want to play. It's funny. Point and laugh. That is fighting fascism, actually.
I live in a deep red state that refuses to go above the federal minimum wage and every fast food restaurant I've gone in for the past 2 years has had kiosks
Cushing, Oklahoma, dubs itself the pipeline crossroads of the world. The tagline is emblazoned on a giant roadside sign fashioned out of pip
People are understandably paying attention to the price of gas. But a figure that's even more concerning is the dwindling supply of oil. What's going on in Cushing, Oklahoma is a warning of things to come.
Cushing, Oklahoma, dubs itself the pipeline crossroads of the world. The tagline is emblazoned on a giant roadside sign fashioned out of pipes on the corner of Main Street and South Stiles Road. It has a valve and everything.
[ ... ]
Cushing is the hub of America’s energy market. It literally provides the oil plumbing for the United States. It’s where America’s benchmark West Texas Intermediate oil is priced and warehoused. From there, it’s piped to refineries around the country.
In normal times, Cushing stores around 40 million barrels of oil with capacity of up to 75 million.
These are not normal times.
Cushing’s current inventory is 21.6 million barrels, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
That’s dangerously close to operational stress levels, the tipping point at which Cushing struggles to supply all of its customers with the oil they demand.
When Cushing’s reserves get below 20 million, they effectively hit empty, scraping the bottom of the barrel of what is largely unusable sludge.
So the US is just 1.61 million barrels from being down to "unusable sludge".
The New York Times published a chart showing the rapidly dwindling global supply of oil.
This is the most rapid drop of the past seven years. The supply got lower for a while in 2023 due to the effects of sanctions on Russia for its illegal invasion of Ukraine. But the decline was slower and markets eventually adjusted. With Trump's Iran war, there's no end in sight and much more oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz than is exported by Russia.
So what is Trump doing about all this? Every week, sometimes more than once a week, he oscillates from threatening to destroy Iranian civilization to proclaiming a new peace deal. While I've not been counting, it seems like there's been close to three dozen such abrupt shifts.
As for energy sources, Trump is again championing the moribund coal industry. He's putting a QAnon conspiracy nut in charge of a new coal project.
‘This is not normal’: Trump leans on MAGA organizer to revive coal
Even if something miraculously came of this (SPOILER: it won't), it would be way too late to help with the current crisis.
Trump created this mess and refuses to clean it up properly.

Three more cases of the New World screwworm have been confirmed, including one outside the main cluster in Texas, demonstrating the difficulty of stopping a resurgent pest that could devastate the nation’s cattle industry, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Monday.
The screwworm is actually a fly larva that eats living flesh instead of dead material. The flies lay their eggs in open wounds of animals like cattle, but wildlife, pets and occasionally even humans can be infested. The government has a program to breed sterile male flies and drop swarms of them from planes to mate with wild females, which kept screwworm contained at the southern end of Panama for decades.
So far, there are five confirmed cases: three calves and a goat in Texas and a dog from neighboring Lea County, New Mexico. The small dog, which the USDA initially reported as a Texas case, lives in New Mexico and was reclassified as the first in that state.
The dog had not traveled to Mexico or Texas, so authorities were investigating around the property where the pet lived. If they find infected flies, animal inspections in the area will increase, New Mexico State Veterinarian Samantha Holeck said during a virtual news conference Monday.
that would be the hysterectomy scar that runs nearly the entire width of my lower abdomen (it couldn't be done laparoscopically). apparently it's more common for the incision to be done vertically, but the gynecological oncologist who performed it said there's less risk of hernia this way. I didn't get a hernia so hey, no argument here. a scar's a scar, who cares what direction it runs.
It's kind of amazing how much this is the identical strategy. Focusing on the distress and harm of parents over the trans or autistic person themselves. Pathologizing the condition treating it as an epidemic, including calling it a social contagion causing a worrying "explosion" of diagnosis because it is "trendy."
Ignoring the experts on the subject while also appealing to "common sense" and dismissing all research that contradicts them while also appealing to "basic science."
Plus it's all the same quacks and bad actors behind previous medical and social moral panics saying the same things in the same ways and no one seems to acknowledge that.
The same man who invented ABA to stop autistic behaviours also invented conversion therapy, which was explicitly to 'stop adult transsexualism', so this feels less surprising than it should be.
fun fact, there was a huge overlap in bad actors between the satanic panic and the "shaken baby syndrome" hysteria. the grift changes but grifters never do.
