finally finished my byantine icon theon portrait! i decided to go with a plain gold background and no halo because he is bey no means a saint. i'll add some notes in about the composition because i had so much fun on my research

the text translates to "THEON THE BETRAYER" because i feel that betrayal is a key part of his story. while i personally don't consider his betrayals that bad, his internal monologue is tainted by guilt because of them. he "betrays" his family by becoming a stark, the starks by taking winterfell, and betrays himself at every turn. so far his story has been one of betrayal and he's now beginning his redemption (to himself, at least).

his hands are crossed over his chest as this pose typically symbolizes repentance and humility. i felt like it fits his current position in the story. he's holding three arrows to represent the three betrayals i mentioned earlier, arrows can represent specific instances of suffering (see mary and the seven arrows) so i wanted to use them here too. also helps that he is an archer and i like drawing arrows. crossed arms also indicate defensiveness which i feel fits him because he's always covering up his true feelings with a mask of pride to protect himself.

scale armor because ironborn are a seafaring culture and it kind of looks like fish scales, used green and brown (earth tones) to show the dissonance between the sea and greenlands.

there's a very small stark wolf on his brooch to contrast with the kraken on his shoulder. wanted to have some of that identity issue in the portrait too. the metal components of the armor are rusting to indicate corruption.

used a mix of stark and greyjoy colors throughout the outfit

red droplets on the collar because ramsay is described as wearing a red drop earring. needed to include some foreshadowing about the bolton stuff.

averted gaze to symbolize shame and inability to face his actions

anyways i really like this piece and hope yall do too! was very fun to crack out my greek, it's gotten rusty since i haven't done much writing recently.

Something that will never not make my eyes roll is when I hear a TB Rhaenyra Stan say "Rhaenyra would've had a good relationship with her half siblings if Alicent didn't get in the way!"

Because first of all it wasn't Alicent that stopped Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra had every right and opertunity to have a good relationship with her siblings and make them believe she wouldn't hurt or kill them. But she didn't, she threw cruel words at them any chance she got, she ignored them like they held the plague, and acted like she was superior to them in every way. So no it wasn't because of Alicent. In fact in book Alicent tried to have a good relationship with Rhaenyra. In show Alicent tried to have a good relationship with Rhaenyra but also tried to get Rhaenyra to at least except her siblings. But it never worked.

And finally, secondly. They may be technically half siblings. But as someone who grew up with half siblings I can tell you if ANYONE said they were my half siblings I would fucking punch them. Those are my siblings, there is no half about it. I grew up with them as my siblings and I treat them as such. Rhaenyra had this opportunity to do the same, and didn't do it. And you all saying they are half siblings shows so much more than any of you realize.

but i think to come out of a movie where vampires serve as a metaphor for how black american communities have the life sucked out of them by white people via cultural appropriation (remmick wanting to use sammie's gift to summon his own ancestors) and forced assimilation (all the turned vampires singing and dancing along with remmick's irish folk song and dance juxtaposed with the blend of cultures during sammie's song in the juke joint) and for your main take away to be 'aww the main villain is just a misunderstood sadboy' or 'idc abt the atrocities he looked sexy doing them (when the atrocities in question were racism)' then youre just being so disengenuous and antithetical to the whole point of the film?

and dont come at me with the 'let people enjoy things' bullshit, sinners is a movie FUNDAMENTALLY about racism and racial dynamics in the united states, and i do think focusing on your little y/n x [whiteboy of the month] fics and 'hes so babygirl' posts do actually stunt your own critical engagement with the message this movie was trying to convey to its audience

i think its also a disservice to remmick's character; the moral nuance that comes to light when you consider his position as an irish immigrant to the US, a victim of the colonialist british empire just like the black main cast (although in a very different way) and how, whilst his desire to reclaim his ancestry and heritage is understandable and even relatable, his pursuit of sammie and willingness to kill literally everyone else at the juke joint is allegorical for how, regardless of their own marginalisation, white people will prey upon and steal from black culture(s) and destroy/disenfranchise black communities to serve their own interests, and the movie is NOT subtle about this either, delta slim literally lays it out for us "white folks like the blues just fine, they just don't like the people who make them"
