Atargatis (known to the Greeks as Derceto) was the principal goddess of northern Syria in Classical antiquity, although her worship is also attested among the Nabataeans in present-day Jordan. Revered primarily as a goddess of fertility, she also served as the baalat (“mistress”) of her people, embodying both civic guardianship and prosperity. Her most important cult centre stood at Hierapolis Bambyce, near present-day Manbij, northeast of Aleppo.
The historian Michael Rostovtzeff referred to her as “the great mistress of the North Syrian lands.” She was commonly associated with the storm god Hadad as her consort. Under the name Ataratheh, both doves and fish were sacred to her—doves symbolizing love and fish representing fertility, abundance, and the life-giving powers of water.
A third-century Syriac source notes that in Syria and Edessa (Urhâi), men once practiced ritual castration in her honor. According to the account, after King Abgar converted to Christianity, he prohibited the custom, bringing the practice to an end in Edessa.
Atargatis is also sometimes depicted as a mermaid-like deity, reflecting her association with a fish-bodied goddess worshipped at Ashkelon.

The Carpentras Stele, the first ancient inscription ever identified as "Aramaic", 4th century BCE.
The Carpentras Stele is an Egyptian-style funerary monument inscribed in Aramaic and now preserved in the Bibliothèque Inguimbertine in Carpentras, France. It commemorates a woman named Taba, depicting her before the underworld god Osiris and later as a deceased person being prepared for burial. The inscription follows Egyptian funerary traditions, praising her virtuous life and wishing her well in the afterlife.
The stele is historically significant as the first Northwest Semitic inscription ever published in modern times and the first Aramaic text to be published, although it was initially mistaken for Phoenician. Discovered in the 18th century, it sparked a long scholarly debate over its language and literary form. By the early 19th century, scholars had conclusively identified the inscription as Aramaic, with some of its vocabulary showing parallels to the Aramaic found in the biblical Books of Daniel and Ruth. Today it is catalogued as KAI 269, CIS II 141, and TAD C20.5.
I know it's cringe as an american to play devil's advocate for other american's behaviors abroad, but I was reading this reddit thread about annoying american abroad habits, and most were fair, like yeah we dumb & rude I get ittttt blah blah blah. but then there were people complaining that american's will answer "where are you from?" with their town & state and the prevailing attitude was like "isn't that just like an american to think we know all their one horse towns" and idk I think we're just friendly lmao. like I would also take that question as a conversation starter. if I met an austrailian and asked where they were from and they said "australia" i'd be like no shit sherlock lol. I don't know beepboopville queensland, but I can't ask about it if you don't tell me. as if any of us yanks know the majority of the municipalities in the united states. if someone told me they were from googoogaga iowa I'd be like wow, never heard of it. tell me more. so that's the one thing I think ppl are misjudging americans on.
I live in Ireland now and every time I say I’m from the States they ask me which one. I think you’re right that it’s a friendly conversation starter to give a specific answer.
100% I think people complaining about this are complaining about the wrong cultural difference. It's not "Americans think we all know their geography," it's "Americans love to chit-chat with strangers and assume everybody else wants to, too."
It's literally the answer to the question that was asked, some people just enjoy being mad for no reason.

when you, as an American are asked, where you are from, especially in countries where the native language is not English, the chances are high that they do indeed not know which country you are from because people oftentimes can't tell your accents apart. It's easy to say "USA" and maybe people will then ask "oh where exactly" because they know it's a huge ass country, there you go, you can start to go in-depth without being culturally condescending
If someone tells me they're from the USA or Australia or whatever I'm not gonna think to myself "no shit sherlock". I can't tell people apart by accent, I am barely able to place the most common german dialects. Sometimes this website is so utterly anglo-centric, for lack of a better term.
So I feel like there's two things going on here:
1. I do notice that people from my country who have never been to america or don't actually know any americans will harbor a ridiculous amount of hate and superiority towards americans just because of what they see in the media. It's objectively stupid and deserves to be called out. Japan is praised for it's politeness culture and the USA is seen as ingenuine stupid idiots for the same thing. People love to hate on the US for anything and everything.
2. You are misunderstanding why people dislike when americans mention their town instead of their country. The issue is not "oh that's tmi i don't need to know the exact spot", the issue is that they are not actually answering the question in a way the other person can understand. Saying "I'm from the US, specifically beepboopville" is fine and nice conversation, saying "I'm from beepboopville" with no reference to any place I would actually know leaves me feeling stupid and needing to ask again where the hell you're from.
It's like asking someone where they got a shirt and you answer "aisle 3", like wtf? At what store?? Am i supposed to tell by your style where you shop at? If you're IN the store it's a fine response but saying that anywhere else is INSANE.
At the same time it's really not hard to ask "at what store/in what country" and people love to blow this out of proportion because USamerica=bad.

I didn’t wanna comment on that post bc I didn’t wanna derail the overall message.
However, I do wanna emphasize that it should also be accepted when a butch doesn’t get a mastectomy or a breast reduction. A butch who doesn’t want to remove her breasts or hide her female body. Being told we aren’t “butch enough” because breasts are seen as feminine and not just a neutral part of the our bodies.
Breasts are a completely natural part of female puberty. Having breasts does not make you “less” of a butch. The removal of female body parts being ascribed to masculinity is not right. A woman can be masculine without alterations. Butch is not just a masculine aesthetic or physical presentation; it’s a journey of self acceptance.
This world already takes so much from women like us. Our bodies are perfect the way they are. Butches are a blessing; we show others exactly what a woman can be uninhibited.

eating disorders have such a blatantly incorrect and dangerous image in most discussions.it’s because it affects mostly girls btw. like why do we view eating disorders as something a person ‘does’ rather than something a person ‘has’ like any other illness. it’s because it’s women btw. why are people going through eating disorders seen as almost perpetrators rather than victims. it’s because it’s women btw. why are eating disorders so insanely common yet under-researched and most treatments ineffective and rudimentary. it’s because it’s women btw.
tbh while it can seem like very blunt language i think it is important to frame an eating disorder as something you do rather than something you have. yes it is an illness, and it’s important to delve into the root causes and underlying insecurities, but as someone who has been inside of these ed communities this gets used as an excuse nonstop.
it’s different from several other disorders in that an eating disorder, especially of the restrictive type, is typically deliberate. it’s an action thoughtfully executed to solve a problem, which is exactly why the communities exist in the first place to bounce ideas off of each other and keep each other ‘on track’. the idea that it’s just something that happens to you when you’re mentally ill and dysmorphic stops people from recovering. “i’m disordered” is a repeated excuse for continuing the cycle, and for encouraging other girls and women to remain in toxic spaces because they won’t be understood anywhere else. and if you look for it on places like edtwt you’ll see it all the time. “why did they expect me to be better when i’m clearly disordered?”
i know exactly what it is to struggle with disordered eating, and when you’re knee deep in shitty coping mechanisms it can be hard to hear, but at the end of the day restriction is a choice you make to deal with what we otherwise don’t address properly. i agree with the tags someone left about it being more akin to an addiction. this same logic applies to self harm; it’s not something that happens to you, it’s something you do. you can only make the choice to make better decisions if you take a more active stance in your life and realize you’re in control of how you deal with things and it’s soo important to push to young girls especially that they have that agency
OP is saying that we as a society should stop acting like those choices are being made in a vacuum and she is correct. Women and girls starve and purge themselves because people hate women and girls who look like me. There tend to be other factors that turn standard compliance with diet culture into a full blown eating disorder but those factors usually lead to much different behaviours in men and boys, so there’s no getting around the fact that it’s because society thinks my body constitutes dangerous noncompliance. Congrats on overcoming it but you’re doing that thing people who move up from poor to middle class do where they go “I was able to overcome it, therefore it’s only a matter of individual willpower and we don’t need to change the systems that put people in that situation in the first place.” I want a society that doesn’t use my body to shame women and girls into starving and purging themselves in the first place. That is not too much to ask.
