the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.

"They were homophobic until their own kid came out as queer!!!!" Ok. So what I'm hearing is that they're not homophobic anymore. What I'm hearing is that their child came out as queer and their parent then looked at their prejudices and questioned whether or not those prejudices outweighed their love for their child. What I'm hearing is that their love for their child won out against the prejudices they'd spent years espousing. What I'm hearing is that they grew as a person and they're an improved version of themselves now.

Storytelling has been a vital part of how moral values get transmitted since before recorded history. This is a purpose that fiction has always served. It can perpetuate and transform cultures across generations. It can broaden our understanding beyond what our individual experiences can contain. It is the delivery system of dogma, but also of empathy and shared experience. “Silly little cartoons” are NOT exempt from the ecosystem ideas. Whether it’s the works of Toni Morrison or Adventure Time that gets people there truly doesn’t matter in the end. To look down on popular and children’s media and the people who are moved by it isn’t intellectualism or enlightenment; it’s snobbery, and it’s a missed opportunity.

every so often i remember how awesome the modern interconnected multicultural world is. i grew up getting to hear fairy tales from all over the world. africa, asia, europe, america. everywhere in between. i can have bagels for breakfast, curry for lunch, and ramen for dinner without even leaving the city limits. music and art and philosophy and technology that originated thousands of miles and years apart from eachother have come together and interwoven into something greater than the sum of its parts. its hard not fall into despair when thinking about the horrors but god. god the wonders.
