building beautiful worlds for minor characters and not a peep about Korogyi. what, is he too inconsequential? number 3 draft pick and no love in the fandom? even vincent lemaire gets a shout out every now and then. Korogyi doesn't even get a first name...
truths known about Korogyi:
3rd overall draft pick
plays for the houston drillers (top)
so happy to be here
had to concentrate pretty hard on getting those three fingers up
stays silly 😛
Wait also he’s a supportive king !! Though misguided 🥴😂
like alexei is a tragic figure to me he sucks soooo much obviously but also. he’s only alright at hockey, not great like ilya. he’s only alright with people, not amazing like ilya. he’s smart enough, but ilya has the head for strategy. he’s attractive enough, but nothing like beautiful ilya. all of the qualities that work so well for ilya—his cleverness, his brutality, his charisma, his sense of duty—they’re weak and twisted on alexei—manipulative, cruel, manic, cowed. and alexei is the one who stays and alexei cares for their father and alexei follows in his footsteps and alexei does everything he is meant to do and their father does not remember alexei, his firstborn son, the child he has known the longest, 4 years longer than he ever knew ilya. alexei is just that forgettable, unlike that beautiful baby brother. boy does it really suck to be the first draft of a later better work.

idiot at wizard school just said "i have devised the perfect mana nullification field rendering me impervious to all forms of magic!" i figure he should've taken a few more interdisciplinary courses because i tweaked the timing on a gravitation spell to throw a giant boulder at him. the moment I released the spell it stopped being a sorcery equation and started being a physics one

Us, arriving to Austria to a tiny family hotel owned by an elderly lady
Us: speak only limited German
Lady: barely speaks English
Us:
Lady:
Lady: Czech? Slovak?
Us: Czech
Lady, to herself: Czech, that's a Slavic language right
Lady: understand Yugoslavian?
Us:
Us: yeah that works
Shit like this can really only happen in Europe. Reminds me of the time I took my best shot at ordering at a restaurant in Spain in spanish. The closest language to spanish that I actually speak is latin.
Waiter: Germany?
Me: No, Czechia.
Waiter, in a heavily accented but intelligible Czech: Why didn’t you say so before! We get you guys here all the time!
Já v roce 2019 na Ukrajině: OK, takže když použiju tohle staročeský slovo, přidám polský sloveso, své chabé znalosti záhoráčtiny a řeknu to s ruskym přízvukem, tak to projde.
[Me in 2019 in Ukraine: ok so if i use this Old Czech word, add a Polish verb, my poor knowledge of the Záhorie dialect of Slovak and say it with a Russian accent, it might pass]
Reminds me of the time when we were in Poland and I tried to order a burger using a truly unholy mix of Slovak, Russian and Ostrava dialect (which in itself is like an unholy mix of Czech and Polish).
I did get the burger
[#my grandpa called this "Slavic Esperanto"]
I know Ukrainians who can do this on purpose and masterfully, and it was mind-blowing to hear a speech as immediately understandable to an audience of native speakers of three different native Slavic languages, not just two languages as is common
During one student exchange I (a Pole) got acquainted with two students from Czechia and Russia. At first we talked in English or German, but after a while we’ve noticed, that we could understand each other’s native languages just fine. And if some word was unknown in one language, another one had the right synonym.
*Each of us talking in their mother tongue*
Me: Bla bla bla.
Russian: I don’t know this “bla”.
Czech: Oh, we have “bla”! We also call it “that”!
Russian: Oh I know “that”! It’s a very old version of “this”.
Me: Oh, we have “this” too, but it means something slightly different.
German acquaintance: Was für nen Scheiß zieht ihr da ab? o_O
the reason there aren't slavic people in the bible is that they wouldn't have been surprised or awed to hear the disciples speak in tongues and be understood by people of many nations at once
Slavs walked away from the Tower of Babel mildly inconvenienced.
As a non-native speaker of Czech who is only conversationally proficient and has terrible grammar, let me tell you, no one was more surprised than I was to discover that I can understand Slovak just fine. And when the two moving guys finished hauling my furniture to my new apartment and we were chatting a bit before they left, I discovered that the reason I'd had a little trouble understanding one of their "accents" was because he was speaking Ukrainian the whole time.
"Slavs walked away from the Tower of Babel mildly inconvenienced." killed me
I needed more toxic ragebaiter Ilya in my life
bbc's merlin was literally thee most show of all time they gave us a black actress playing guinevere, one of the greatest queerbaits of our time, katie mcgrath (sword), katie mcgrath (evil), blatant disregard for any sort of historical accuracy, a queer metaphor they publicly said "didn't mean anything", and then at the end they fucking killed king arthur. truly legendary.
Over 40 years later and Yes, Minister still holds up. Incredible stuff. I really wish we still got television like this.
It's very understated, is the thing; there's very little in the way of Big Shots or Epic Music. The enjoyment comes from arguments over real opinions.
It really does feel quite idealistic, compared to similar shows today, which is funny because it carries itself like a cynical show: there's a lot focus on how the political side of the government is a bunch of vote-chasing fools, while the administrative side is a collection of unaccountable slow-moving bureaucrats.
But most of the major problems really are based around attempts to make the government better, arguments over what does and doesn't work, why things work the way they do or why they won't change. Hacker might be tied to the need for votes but he really does believe in getting more women in the civil service. Humphrey might be a cynical, manipulative servant but really does want the machinery of government to keep working even as the actual rulers of the country change every few years.
Something I haven't seen discussed in the Heated Rivalry fandom is the Actual Real ice hockey concept of a dance partner or 'tying a man up' where to prevent 2 on 1 brawls or sit out a brawl players on opposing teams will skate up and hug each other in a very damsel in distress way. The first time I saw it I genuinely thought I was watching queer Romeo and Juliet on ice. Are we all going to pretend King Chirper Ilya Rozanov would not start a fight and then go tie up his man as an excuse to cuddle? That Shane Good Boy Hollander couldn't use it as a way of pretending to be the bigger more mature person? Let them cuddle at work as dance partners under the veil of heteronormative witchcraft the league is under to pretend this isn't deeply queer coded!
Shane is very proud of his chirps. Ilya is also very proud of Shane's chirps.
Also (criminally left out of the show):
i do think its funny armand is inexplicably english. the rp accent of a guy born in india raised in venice who lived in paris for 400 years is to communicate non-diagetically that hes evil
if you’re the arch nemesis of a frenchman for multiple centuries you turn english
remember in p.e. when they'd take a bunch of insecure teenagers & be like "today we're going to play basketball" and then not teach you how to play basketball. and then put you in a group with guys who were obsessed with basketball and would get mad at you for not knowing how to play basketball. why did they do that
