Yon Rogg sees himself as a protagonist, whether he acknowledges his actions as good or bad is not that relevant. He wants this girl to be on his side. So he puts her down, and down, and down, until she thinks the only way her worth can be measured through him, through his approval. And he acts as her mentor, maybe genuinely wants her to succeed, but she’s never quite good enough by his standards, he sets the rules so that she can never quite win or measure up. Until one day, she realises that actually, his restrictions are an illusion. She doesn’t need them. She doesn’t need him to tell her how/who to be anymore. It’s a statement of ultimate independence.
