Tbh i think the disabling nature of a lot of work is sort of criminally overlooked by a lot of otherwise excellent labor analysts
Like im a janitor, I clean all day, and at 23 I am developing serious upper back pain that is echoed in my older coworkers ten-fold. It's a job that demands you to be up and moving constantly and often bent over or scrubbing something. We (janitors) have much higher rates of back, joint, and muscle problems and injuries compared to the population average, as well as significantly higher rates of sickness and chronic illness. It's a job that literally destroys your body.
But whenever people talk about my profession, it seems like their main concerns are the (accurate) ideas that the labor we do is wildly devalued and invisibilized and that it is a gross and thankless job to clean up after others. While this is a major aspect of the work I do I feel like it undercuts the serious physical toll of the work itself and the ways that impacts our ability to experience life out of the workplace.
Obviously this doesn't just apply to janitorial work, and tbh its perhaps an issue of imp-core labor and its failures to understand itself given that the most dangerous jobs with the most disabling effects have largely been outsourced to the periphery at this point, creating a sort of buffer for the modern imp-core worker where the largest problem with most jobs truly isnt the literal material effects of the work upon the worker
There's a very funny thing that happens in transhuman science fiction where sometimes an author will turn out to be a reactionary conservative who thought he was writing dystopian fiction and intended all the sickass radical body modification stuff to be scary, but he assumed that was obvious and forgot to put it in the actual text.
It's like the literary version of those breathless propaganda thinkpieces where they accidentally make their political opponents sound cool as hell because they have no idea how it reads to anyone whose brain hasn't spent the last thirty years being pickled in fear juice.
Im not saying this to put anyone down but it does feel a little bit funny when people equate Javertâs devotion to The Law to a devotion of Justice. There is a subtle difference to me.
also as some of you may know, i have always been repulsed by dead bugs. absolutely horrified by them. i loved live bugs and didn't mind other dead things (i assist necropsies on marine mammals) but dead bugs upset me so much i'd have other people remove them from rooms for me. but after i moved to ireland i wanted to learn the insects their to impress my boyfriend when she visited (heehee)
so i took a bunch of bug ID books out of the library and started learning all of them. then one day once i moved to kerry i was lying down on my belly on the beach sunning, when i noticed a dead bug in front of me and without thinking about it i picked it right up and opened up the ID book. then i realized i was holding a dead bug, and i didn't even mind.
as always, curiosity is the antidote to fear : )
Maybe one reason time seems to speed up in adult life is because when your full time job leaves you roughly 5 hours of free time a day plus two days off a week your life turns into a sort of monotony that makes the days blend together and creative pursuits move in slow motion as you can only get to them when other your commitments are done.
When you look back and think damn 2019 wasnât that long ago where did the time go? Job. Your Job took it.
you know, whenever i see the stupid Simpson x Monopoly ad being shoved in between posts, it reassures me how right Bill Watterson, of Calvin and Hobbes fame, was to outright refuse to ever license his creative work for anything. god... if i ever made something as culturally significant as Calvin and Hobbes or the Simpsons, lord grant me the strength to hold out on that sweet sweet licensing money lest i too have to watch my beloved children hollowed out and forced to dance like gambling homunculi as well.
yeag...
Movement nudge, hand mobility! đ
X
1) do this even if you're under 40. seriously. I definitely should have been doing something like this for years and I only turned 40 a month and a half ago
2) if you're like me just now trying this going "oh god i've only done 15 and i think my hands are cramping" start lower than 30 and increase by 5 once whatever number you're doing no longer makes your hand cramp up. I can manage about 15 per exercise at the moment.
If you're hypermobile, be especially gentle.
If you do a lot of GRASPING make sure you do the SPREADING WIDE counterstretch. Whenever I crochet or handwrite for a long time I gotta do that one frequently

Noticing a lack of gender nonconformity and then blaming trans people for it is the most bass ackwards shit in the world if you think about how any of this works for even a second. You know who Loves rising conservatism wrt sexual-gender roles? Trans people, obviously, they're stealing our gnc cis people and making them Actually Normaler and Non Controversial by getting a sex change [EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER]
As we all know trans women pop out of the ground fully formed within the binary no matter what and thusly begin turning the butches into men for their dastardly purposes. We have to save cis people. For gender nonconformity
Like I literally HAVE noticed a decrease in gnc people/popularity of gnc aesthetics what with the fascism and it's because cis people are trying to get even cisgenderer. What with the fascism. It's pretty obvious what's happening here right like

So, thereâs a post about how Bertie Woosterâs âwhat ho!â is a corruption of Beowulfâs âHwaet!â And @fremedonâ and @oldshrewsburyianâ wrote up some things I decided to voice.
I would pay money for a complete translation in this style.
