Well, look no further than "The Tides of Fate"! Some of you may already know of my novel that I'm writing, but now, I'm turning it over to the audience, with the addition of voice actors! All you have to do is read the doc here, then fill out the form with your audition. I'm thinking of turning the book into an audio book at some point, so I'd love to start finding actors beforehand. You can audition for any character or characters you'd like (with the exception of one, unless there's high demand for them).
Also! If there are any artists/animators interested in this as well, I'd be open to considering people for character art/mini animations. This will most likely not be a fully animated production.

"Nobody smart plays fair. I thought you'd learned that by now."
"Kai! Get up, O Benevolent Savior of Mortals."
A pillow launched at his head was what woke Kai the next morning. He groaned, cracking one eye open to see Quill in the doorway. They wore a plain white shirt and shorts, their hair pulled back into a loose ponytail.
"What is it?" he grumbled, covering his face with his wing. "It's not even six hours, Quill."
"Your stray's pacing by the wards. Figured you should be the one to deal with him."
Kai sighed, rolling onto his back. Ciro had been closed-off yesterday, despite Kai's efforts to help him settle. The mortal hadn't said more than a dozen words that night. Kai had chalked it up to pride, though Quill had insisted Ciro was more terrified than he wanted to appear.
Ciro had denied both options.
"Alright, alright," Kai said. "I'll go talk to him. Just…give me a minute."
After throwing on a clean outfit—a simple black shirt and pants—Kai slipped downstairs and into the cool morning air, heading in the direction Quill had indicated. The moon hung low in the sky, a pale crescent doing little to illuminate the forest around him. It'd be another half hour or so before the sun came up, if Kai estimated correctly.
Just as Quill had said, he found Ciro at the edge of the wards. The human paced back and forth a few meters, brow furrowed as his gaze darted between a few trees. Magic hummed from them, a tug on Kai's being. Even without light, he knew those were where some of the wards laid. He didn't know whether to be concerned or curious as one of those invisible strands didn't lead to a carving.
Ciro didn't notice him at first. Only when Kai cleared his throat did the mortal jump, yelping. Kai cringed internally as Ciro stumbled closer to the wards.
"You're up early," Kai said. He leaned against a nearby tree, crossing his arms. "Did you have trouble sleeping?"
A huff escaped Ciro at that. He shook his head. "I'm fine."
"Humans tend to say that, although it's typically a lie—"
"It's not a lie." The response came too fast. "Really, I'm fine." Ciro continued his pacing, hands clasped behind his back.
Kai watched him for a minute, two, letting the silence stretch. The mortal's steps were too quick, his hands fidgeting too much.
"You're stressed." It wasn't a question. "I understand your situation isn't the most ideal, however—"
"Isn't the most ideal?" Ciro gave a bitter chuckle. "I'm stuck in a god's home. I'd say that's far from ideal."
"Forgive me if I'm assuming wrong, but I believed your kind worshipped us. Most people would be thrilled to be in your place."
"I'm not most people." Ciro halted, glancing at Kai—not directly in the eye. The mortal hadn't done that at all in the past twelve hours. "I haven't worshipped the gods in years. Why start now?"
"I'm not asking for worship," Kai said. "I'm asking for you to accept your reality. It's only a few days, Ciro."
"Why can't you just let me go now? Drop the wards and let me be on my way?"
"It's not up to me if you can leave."
"Then who's it up to?" Kai saw the moment the realization hit him. The mortal's expression went slack.
"Quill," Ciro whispered. "They control the wards, don't they?"
A nod was all Kai needed to give. "They have more power over them than I do. I can let you out for a time, but I must accompany you."
"Do it, then. Let me out."
When Kai didn't respond, Ciro scowled. "You can't keep me here forever!" The human jabbed a finger at Kai's chest. "I don't know about you gods, but humans aren't meant for confinement."
Kai's tail flicked, his wings tensing. The tattoo hidden beneath his glove burned. "Neither are we."
Ciro sighed, his shoulders dropping. "Then you can see where I'm coming from." His voice was softer now—Kai would say apologetic, if he didn't know better. "Please. If only for a little while."
Damn it, Kai. When did you start getting soft?
"Very well." He stepped past Ciro, past the wards, feeling the hum of the magic flow over him. He offered a hand to the mortal. "Ciro Velari, I give you permission to pass through the wards. I would like, if you will, for you to accompany me on a short walk."
Ciro hesitated, clearly wary that this wasn't some trick. Reluctantly, he took Kai's hand, following the god beyond the wards. No agony overcame him this time, Kai's presence making sure of that. Once he was certain the mortal wouldn't keel over, he turned, weaving his way through the trees, whether Ciro followed him or not. He knew he would. He didn't have much choice.
It took seventeen minutes to reach their destination, each and every one of them spent in silence thick enough to take a knife to. But finally, the trees parted, revealing a small peninsula on the coast. Near its edge sat a white and blue lighthouse, the stone faded with time—though still standing strong. Kai heard Ciro's steps slow behind him, knew the mortal was taking in the structure.
"Who's…is this?" he asked.
"I never knew," Kai replied. "It's been abandoned for centuries."
"Centuries? But it—" Ciro paused, his eyes narrowed. "What are you the god of? Because you haven't mentioned that yet."
Kai turned to face him. "Time," he said simply. "And patience."
"Time," Ciro repeated. "So you— what? Froze the lighthouse in time?"
"Not exactly. It's more complicated than that." He motioned for Ciro to follow as he started towards the lighthouse. "Freezing time is near impossible. I can slow it, speed it up, even reverse it in some cases, though I've never frozen it completely. The smaller the object, the better it works. I could, say, reverse the threads of time to replenish an eaten apple, or speed them up to oxidize a piece of copper. This—" He gestured to the building with a flick of his wing. "—was a harder task to accomplish."
Ciro wandered after him, still fixated on the lighthouse. "You slowed time for this, then?" The genuine curiosity in his voice caught Kai off guard. Ciro seemed to catch himself off guard, too, as his pace faltered. "I mean, it's— whatever."
Kai cocked an eyebrow at him. He didn't say anything, though, pushing the door open. Ciro eyed it, specifically the symbol etched into the wood.
"Is that another ward?" he asked.
"This one won't harm you. That wasn't its purpose."
"What was its purpose?"
Kai didn't answer him, stepping inside. Inside, only a staircase was visible in the barren space, spiraling up to the gallery deck. Ciro shut the door behind him, hesitantly following the god up the stairs. At the top, Kai heard the man's breath catch as the two of them took in the view.
Dawn's first rays peeked over the horizon, turning the waves into vibrant bursts of citrine and roseate. Wind whipped at Kai's hair, ruffling his feathers, but he paid it no mind. The tang of salt lingered on his tongue, more welcome than it would've been centuries ago. He leaned against the railing, taking in Ciro's reaction.
"Why…why did you bring me here?" Kai barely heard the words over the swells below. "You won't push me off, will you?"
"I'm not cruel, Ciro. It's…peaceful here. I thought you might enjoy it."
Surprise etched itself in Ciro's features. "I…" He tried to play it off with a shrug. "It's alright, I guess. Nothing I haven't seen before."
Somehow, Kai didn't quite believe that.
Ciro settled onto the deck, legs between the railing, gazing out at the horizon. The silence was almost comfortable, if one could ignore the residual tension in the air.
"Do you have any family, Ciro?" Kai asked quietly. "Anyone who will be looking for you?"
Ciro didn't respond for longer than Kai hoped, though shorter than he'd expected. His hands fidgeted in his lap, picking at his thumbnail.
"My parents. And my sister. They think I'll be home in a few days."
Kai nodded, already running through possible scenarios in his mind. Surely that could convince Quill to let Ciro leave; they didn't want more attention from mortals. But trying to buy a ticket for a ship leaving the island would be near impossible over the next few days, with the festival approaching. His best bet would be to go in the days after, when the island's quieter.
"I understand you want to get home," Kai began. "I truly do. However, it's for the best if you rest here for several days, at least until after the Festival of Stories. Booking passage will be easier when it concludes. I swear we will let you go—unharmed—when the time comes."
Ciro didn't want to believe him, Kai could tell. He'd know that feeling anywhere—had worn it himself more times than he could count. Of course Ciro didn't believe him. Why should he? He'd said it himself, he hadn't worshipped the gods in years. No point in trusting one now.
Why? A part of him whispered the question, curiosity tugging at him. Why doesn't he worship the gods?
Kai pushed the thought to the side. Now wasn't the time.
"Okay."
Kai's head snapped to Ciro, that single word managing to capture his complete attention.
"I'll stay."
…That was easier than Kai thought it'd be.
"Alright. I…Alright."
He turned out toward the sea, letting the weight of the silence settle over them. Neither of them spoke another word, even when they eventually descended the lighthouse once more and returned to the cottage. The tension in the air felt lighter somehow, as if Ciro's agreeance had shifted something between them, something Kai couldn't name.
A fic written 2 years ago is NOT OLD. Two years is nothing. Two years ago was yesterday.
