Have you guys noticed how much the internet/technology just does not listen to you anymore? I click “don’t show this artist” on Spotify and I get recommended a music video by them on the front page. I click “skip this update” on a pop up every time I open a file organization app and it’s right back there every time. I click unsubscribe on a newsletter and it keeps showing up in my inbox!! I click “delete my account” and the next time I open the website they suggest I “reactivate”.
Everyone is complaining that strong female characters don't (necessarily) have to let go of their femininity to be strong, not enough people are writing pink little psychos
You can make her let out a pained grunt at the end of battle, everyone looks at her worried, "I broke my nail". (She killed 50 soldiers)
"Excuse me, Mr. Blacksmith, I need you to make me a different sword. This one's handle makes my rings hurt my fingers. No, I want to keep wearing the rings, they're pretty"
You can make her get everyone late to a mission because there's no way she's getting her hair wet, she has just gotten it done. They can't leave without her wither, there's no way this mission will succeed without her.
You can make her the best engineer in the program, yes, all of her male subordinates are listening to her ramble about Little Women. What? It's *just* because they want to keep their job, no, they're not enjoying it...
"Omg, this gun is so cute. It will fit perfectly in the purse I saw on that store across the street. I need to get them both. Of course the purse goes in the weaponry budget, it's for the gun, duhhh"
"Be a gentelman and solve it for me" "You're literally the only one in the kingdom who can do this" "Aaaffff, so boring"
You can make her reasonable, you can make her unreasonable, you can make her good, you can make her evil, you can make her sweet, you can make her selfish... Top tier character design, many options. Gimme more pink little psychos
Ok but Zuko using the knowledge he acquired during his banishment to help him as the Fire Lord. Like making small talk with Earth Kingdom dignitaries about their local foods that he enjoyed and even misses. Like having in-depth conversations with his captains about sea currents and navigation. Like, in the middle of a meeting with several high-ranking naval officials, pointing out flails in security, like how a person can cling to a Fire Nation ship for hours at a time, or climb aboard using hatches on the upper decks, or disguise themselves as a lower ranking guard with easily accessible spare armour….
Though none of his experiences can prepare Zuko for the long, awkward silence that comes after he admits to doing or at least knowing something illegal and/or completely buck wild
Advisors: Princess Azula did perform the astounding feat of infiltrating Ba Sing Se…
Zuko: Huh? Oh, that’s not hard. It’s pretty nice, if you don’t mind the brainwashing, but you can’t get a spicy octopus for love or money. We ate so much jook. *shudders*
Advisors:… you got in too…. interesting.
*
Advisors: The mysterious Water Tribe city at the North Pole
Zuko: It’s a pretty place, if you like ice. Lots of sealturtles. They have a really nice little sort of sacred grove thing there, too, I kidnapped the Avatar from it once.
Advisors: …. we have some questions….
*
Advisors: We still have not found the Fire Lord’s secret supplier of new weapons -
Zuko: He’s at the Northern Air Temple. (Realizing they’re all staring at him) Oh, no, I haven’t met him personally, but I have friends who have. He sounds like a very interesting guy.
Advisors: SO MANY QUESTIONS
*
Zuko: (while directing post-war reparation efforts) Oh, and we need to send a lot of people to work on replanting the forest around this obscure village.
Advisors:…. may we ask why?
Zuko: Apparently the local panda spirit is pretty mad about having its forest burned down.
Advisors, now afraid to ask: ….Yes, Fire Lord.
*
Every now and then, the curiosity gets too much and they’ll bring up something like ‘legendary sand benders’ or ‘Southern Islands’ and Zuko invariably produces some tidbit of local knowledge (either his own or gleaned from the Gaang’s stories) and six Foreign Ministers have resigned in fear and the seventh one only barely held it together when Zuko greeted an envoy from a tiny, insignificant Earth Kingdom island with ‘Listen, I am really sorry about what happened last time, I hope the supplies I sent helped with the rebuilding, do you still have that giant eel thing?” IS THERE ANYTHING HE DOESN’T KNOW.
Adviser: “There still has been no word about the whereabouts of the vigilante known as the Blue Spirit. The last reported sighting was in Ba Sing Se. It is imperative we find more information about him.”
Zuko: “Oh you’re still looking into that?”
Adviser: “He is a wanted criminal in both the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation for espionage, theft, assault and battery, breaking and entering and breaking numerous other local laws and customs.”
Zuko: “Huh when you put it like that it does sound pretty bad.”
Adviser: “My Lord, surly you heard of him and his crimes.”
Zuko: “Of course I heard of him. Its just… I mean considering all the good he did. His heart was in the right place?”
I think using a worse algorithm that consumes exponentially more resources than the alternative is morally reprehensible actually, and that is a general statement extending outside of just LLMs.
I'm talking video games that eat up RAM because the execs didn't want to pay for optimization time. I'm talking search algorithms that are made worse on purpose. I'm talking OS updates that break old hardware to run background services nobody actually needs.
Shoving "AI" into everything is just an extreme case of a wider problem.
Conversely, that also means that for some applications, machine learning models are the right choice because they're a reasonable alternative in resource usage terms.
While I'm at it, some data centers' cooling systems are actually fine because they're built in cold climates where the waste heat is used to keep houses warm.
The problem is the choice to build giant Heat Generating Machines in the middle of a fucking desert, and then using water that could go to watering crops for cooling.
And while lots of industries use data centers, the extreme need for parallel compute capacity over storage and transmission is a characteristic of machine learning that's troublesome, because the other uses of this extreme amount of compute capacity are niche and not immediately profitable. Lots of scientific work can make use of this type of data center, for example, but publicly funded research doesn't like overpaying for computer time.
The problem is essentially that tech is currently convinced they're going to make consumer services out of a type of hardware that's good for niche, specialized problem solving. They're trying to do this by selling access to a purported Ultimate Do-Everything Algorithm.
The incentives at play here are never going to result in a product that lives up to those expectations.
Anyway when I was working with supercomputers for my PhD one of my daily annoyances was waiting in the queue to run a large-scale physics simulation on like 4 GPUs, while literally half of the computer, several thousand GPUs, was occupied for days on end by a single AI training job.
I think the most hilarious place to put Post-Canon Sokka would have been the university at Ba Sing Se. I think he would have made a great unhinged professor. Also, in true Sokka fashion, he should have completely dodged fame. Momo is more famous than he is.
He wants to demonstrate to the class how this thing called electricity works, so he's going to be bringing in a Firebender, so everybody be cool, we're all friends here... and in walks Princess Azula of the Fire Nation. One-time conqueror of the city. One of the students is currently writing an essay on how her brief rule of the city affected fruit trade. She says she considers the class to still be her subjects as she doesn't acknowledge any pretenders to any of her thrones, but for now you're exempted from bowing and "Your Highness" will do. It's a really interesting lecture.
"Okay, guys - hey, listen up, everyone - I won't be here next week, me and Aang are going to-" yeah right, sure, Professor Sokka knows the Avatar. Except, of course, the Avatar walks in sheepishly and says that Appa might have gotten into Sokka's hybrid crops, and then you all have to sit there and watch your professor chase the Avatar around with a sword.
One postgrad student is specializing in Water Tribe Cultures. She's currently studying the massive cultural shift that happened in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of the war - oh, and Professor, I absolutely know that you're from the Southern Water Tribe, but it's just that the shift started with Master Katara, and of course I don't think that every person from the South knows one another haha it's just that I need to ask her some questions and I thought maybe you could help me write a letter or write a letter of introduction or...
Sokka looks at her blankly and goes "yeah, she's my sister. KATARA!" which is followed by a faint answering "fuck you!" from Somewhere and to the horror/elation of our postgrad, Master Katara bursts in and is promptly beaned in the head with a rock by Professor Sokka. Her brother. her hero and her professor are siblings and currently brawling on the floor.
Sokka does not teach or study history, but he does sometimes sit in on lectures about recent history. Whenever he does, several doctoral students flock in to sit near him (even if it's an intro course) so that they can eavesdrop on his grumbling. (No matter how they try, an "overheard utterance" is not a valid source according to their professors. No, we have no sources on the Avatar's bison taking part in combat - sky bison are not war animals and...)
He gets regular deliveries with the Beifong family crest on them, and he goes "sweet, Toph must have found some new minerals" and at this point nobody needs to ask which Toph. He seems to have friends everywhere, literally everywhere. Wang was headed out to this massive swamp to study if it's one big organism, and Sokka told him to find some guy named Hue and "don't mind the loincloth." One time the university gets shut down because the Earth King wants to visit. Oh, visit the University? What an honor- Of fucking course not, he wants to visit Professor Sokka, who yells at him and his royal guards for interrupting his day. The Earth King and his many, many royal guards then sheepishly say sorry and file out.
The last straw is when - not a week after he yelled at the Earth King - the assistant head of the Political Science dept walks in to the faculty lounge to find Sokka having tea with a nice normal man dressed in Earth greens for once, and can't resist a little joke. "Let me guess, you're having tea with the Fire Lord." And then she can instantly tell that she fucked up, because both of them go stock still.
So when the two men awkwardly stand up and proceed to introduce the Fire Lord whose portrait she has in her office because she is the assistant head of Political Science as Li, a server at the Jasmine Dragon, she just says "hello Li" and leaves to find a bottle of something strong.
The 300 level poli-sci final exam at Ba Song Se University is infamous for the airship question. It's an essay question, worth a whole 10 points on a 60 point exam, asking for the primary influences that led to airship technology no longer being used for military purposes after its initial introduction by the Fire Nation during the day of the comet. No matter how the rest of the test changes it's always on the exam, and no one ever gets more than 9/10 on it. Doesn't matter how thorough your knowledge, how compelling and in-depth your essay, how many brilliantly sourced paragraphs you manage to frantically scratch out before the exam period ends. Nine out of ten, never more, with exactly one exception.
Professor Sokka.
Apparently he audited the course when he was originally a student at the university, a few years after the war, and submitted the only response to ever get a perfect score on the airship question during the first year it was included in the exam.
On a dare, you ask if he still has his exam so you can see his record holding essay, and to your surprise he does and he obliges. It's five words long, but only if you include the source as well.
Indicate the primary cause(s) that prevented the pursuit of military airship technology after the hundred year war, with sources. (10 points)
at the risk of sounding like one of those "if you say anything even slightly negative about taylor swift you're a misogynist" type of fans.... sometimes I read comments people make about swifites and think to myself "oh boy you really want to say women but you have just enough emotional intelligence to know you can't so you're saying swifties instead"
listening to actually romantic and i don’t think it’s about just one person, i think it’s about numerous shady bitches that have been on her last nerve and i think that makes it even better kinda like how you couldn’t pin point exactly who some of ttpd was about it’s a decoupage if you will
I honestly gotta wonder if all that many students are using AI or whatever in college. Partially because the hysteria reminds me of the tide pods hysteria. Partially because it reminds me of how fast environmentalism got pushed from a systemic problem (solvable with systemic change) to an individual matter (not solvable at the individual level). Those stories fail a lot of the misinformation checks and balances, especially the ones about "creating a feeling of moral righteousness" and my own personal check of "resist anything using a Kids These Days context."
Basically they sound hinkey and poorly scrutinized.
Also, what counts as using AI to get through school? I'm sure some students are using it to cheat which...those folks would've cheated either way, but a lot of people just use it as a chatbot, to like, talk to.
If you ask ChatGPT to make an example exam for you to practice with, then give it the answers and ask it to grade your work, that's better studying that what most people in my generation did (rote memorization), but that's also using AI to get through school. Because you're using it to study.
Do a lot of students of all ages use AI tools? ✅ Yes, it's a popular tech right now.
Do they use it as a "replacement for using their brain" and cheat their way through school and some day soon your doctor won't know anything because ChatGPT got them through medical school? ❌ No, that's Hyesteria.
1 ChatGPT prompt uses 0.5 liters of water, but it takes 628 liters of water to produce one liter of cow's milk and 3,000 liters for a single beef steak.
Do you judge people who don't have a vegan diet more harshly than someone who uses chatbots?
I’m going to be honest, I do not believe for a second that anyone who says it’s hysteria to say students are using ChatGPT as a replacement for critical thinking and cheating their way through school are teachers or have ever spoken to a teacher about this issue.
Yes, it’s happening. Yes, it’s a problem. No, it’s not hysteria.
My students will not read picture books for book reports and will instead ask ChatGPT to give them a summary of the book instead. Picture books. They are 15.
I’ve taught high school students that do not know any basic research skills at all because they use ChatGPT to do even the most basic tasks, and half the time their facts are wrong and they refuse to believe me bc ChatGPT said it’s true.
No one who said kids were eating tidepods actually worked with students. EVERYONE I know who works directly with students says this is a major problem, and all of our concerns are being pushed aside in favor of funneling money into attempting to replace teachers with AI instead.
Older people who have already developed critical thinking and research skills are using it how it’s meant to be used— as a tool. Students who have not developed these skills, which post-pandemic is most students, are using it as a replacement.
I TA for first years in college. Someone else on my team saw a student ask ChatGPT to formulate a Google search. I've told students to "look up how to do x" and they've replied "I don't know what to search."
These students also don't know how to or don't bother to access the class resources. These students have always existed - there's always been the students who have sat in office hours and just waited for you to give them the answer. (I've tutored both before and after LLMs became widespread, I've seen several.) It's just that now, they can pass the class by asking an LLM to give them the answer instead of waiting for a TA or tutor to be worn down by their "I don't know"s and "I don't understand"s enough to hint at/give up the next part of their assignments.
This is not my experience with all students. There are students still using their critical thinking and using ChatGPT as a constructive tool. It's not all of the students, but it's enough to be concerning, and the ease of access mean there are more of them than pre-LLMs.
And also, a thing that people will forget: Using the top students as a metric for how well a school/technology is doing is a bad idea. Some students just do well no matter what. We should be looking at how the class/technology serves the bottom 25% or so, not the top 25%.
