so let’s chat about IRON WIDOW

We interrupt our regularly scheduled aesthetic posting with a special message about the upcoming science-fiction YA novel IRON WIDOW by non-binary cosplayer, history buff, and YouTube sensation Xiran Jay Zhao (links to their website in the next post)

I have a longer, more formal “review” of this book scheduled for the release date (September 21st, 2021) but I really, really want to hype this book up as much as possible as early as possible to encourage people to pre-order it. I haven’t been this excited about a YA book in quite a while. Let me tell you why!

- It was pitched as PACIFIC RIM meets THE HANDMAID’S TALE in a world inspired by Chinese folklore and history, where boy-girl teams pilot giant mecha to fight alien monsters – but the psychic strain usually kills the girls. But only the girls….hmmm…something fishy is going on here…

- The main character is a reimagining of Wu Zetian, the only female emperor of China, who decides she’s going to assassinate the boy who murdered her older sister by volunteering to be his next co-pilot. She assassinates him so well that she kills him through their psychic link and becomes a dreaded IRON WIDOW!

- This makes her very interesting to the government, which would really prefer to make her disappear, but can’t afford to waste that kind of psychic power – so they pair her up with a ~dangerous criminal~ to pilot a new mecha, confident that he will be psychically strong enough to overpower her

- This backfires spectacularly, and suddenly Wu Zetian and her co-pilot have to manipulate both pop culture and the government just to stay alive.

- Plot ensues.

Why should you read this book?

Go back and re-read that plot summary until you understand why  BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!!

- We have a polyamorous F/M/M mutual relationship, I repeat, we PRE-EMPTIVELY SOLVE a LOVE TRIANGLE with POLYAMORY

- Wu Zetian is an amazing anti-hero and I mean that with all my heart. She is constantly doing stuff in this book that made me go, “Wait, can you do that?”  She WILL cut a bitch. Also, she uses a cane or wheelchair because she has bound feet, and you can tell that Xiran really went the extra mile to think about how to portray this and how it affects the character. A lot of YA protagonists can start to feel “same-y” after a while to me, but Wu Zetian REALLY stands out.

- The world is really, really cool? There is SO MUCH going on with the aliens and the mecha and the world they’re living in which I cannot spoil except to say that your primary emotion through the third act will be “?!!!?!!?!!?!!!” AND even outside of the meta plot, there is so much thought and detail put into the rest of the setting, it is so beautiful and it feels like you’re really there. Plus every character is a reimagining/reference to a historical or folklore figure and it was really neat to go on a little scavenger hunt of “Oh! I recognize that name!”

- IRON WIDOW will do for YA sci-fi what CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE did for YA fantasy – if it gets support. Xiran has talked about how they couldn’t get an American publisher to even consider publishing this book because publishers didn’t think American audiences would be interested in Chinese folklore or idol culture or a story about giant mecha, which?? Have they MET the internet?? They were also told that schools and libraries will be reluctant to stock IRON WIDOW because of the polyamorous romance. BUT that is why I really hope people show up for this book because it is SO DESERVING OF SUCCESS and it could open so many doors for other writers and for the whole YA landscape

- Xiran Jay Zhao is a really cool non-binary author and their writing is as charismatic and entertaining as their other content. I just think they’re neat!

When Brazilian graphic designer Carol Rossetti began posting colorful illustrations of women and their stories to Facebook, she had no idea how popular they would become. 

Thousands of shares throughout the world later, the appeal of Rosetti’s work is clear. Much like the street art phenomenon Stop Telling Women To Smile, Rossetti’s empowering images are the kind you want to post on every street corner, as both a reminder and affirmation of women’s bodily autonomy. 

“It has always bothered me, the world’s attempts to control women’s bodies, behavior and identities,” Rossetti told Mic via email. “It’s a kind of oppression so deeply entangled in our culture that most people don’t even see it’s there, and how cruel it can be.”

Rossetti’s illustrations touch upon an impressive range of intersectional topics, including LGBTQ identity, body image, ageism, racism, sexism and ableism. Some characters are based on the experiences of friends or her own life, while others draw inspiration from the stories many women have shared across the Internet. 

“I see those situations I portray every day,” she wrote. “I lived some of them myself.”

Despite quickly garnering thousands of enthusiastic comments and shares on Facebook, the project started as something personal — so personal, in fact, that Rossetti is still figuring out what to call it. For now, the images reside in albums simply titled “WOMEN in english!“ or ”Mujeres en español!“ which is fitting: Rossetti’s illustrations encompass a vast set of experiences that together create a powerful picture of both women’s identity and oppression.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is the way it has struck such a global chord. Rossetti originally wrote the text of the illustrations in Portuguese, and then worked with an Australian woman to translate them to English. A group of Israeli feminists also took it upon themselves to create versions of the illustrations in Hebrew. Now, more people have reached out to Rossetti through Facebook and offered to translate her work into even more languages. Next on the docket? Spanish, Russian, German and Lithuanian.

It’s an inspiring show of global solidarity, but the message of Rossetti’s art is clear in any language. Above all, her images celebrate being true to oneself, respecting others and questioning what society tells us is acceptable or beautiful.

“I can’t change the world by myself,” Rossetti said. “But I’d love to know that my work made people review their privileges and be more open to understanding and respecting one another.””

My favorite thing about this is how there’s diversity in the women even when it isn’t relevant. There are more fat women than just the illustrations regarding body image. There are multiple women in wheelchairs even when the text isn’t focusing on it. there are so many different races and ethnicity even when that’s not what the words are focusing on. One of them doesn’t have a left arm and it isn’t the focus. It’s beautiful, showing the overlap between all these things.

ok this is my one shippy thing for weasley week, percy gets a small fic rather than a bunch of headcanons because I am weak for perciver but I also don’t want to erase audrey and their daughters so here is how i force perciver into canon

If Percy is being honest with himself – which he tries to be, these days - Audrey is not an interesting person. She works alongside him in the Department for Magical Transportation and she is in every way conventional. They get a drink together one day after work. She’s nice. They start dating, because that’s what people do. And no reason ever comes up to stop. And then they get married, because that’s what people do a couple years into a relationship and all his siblings are doing it. And it’s nice. And then a year later their first child is born, because that’s what people do. And he loves little Molly, so, so much. And then he and Audrey have another one, because people do that too. And Lucy joins Molly as the brightest stars in his sky.

Lucy is nearing her second birthday when Audrey stands up at the kitchen table after dinner and declares suddenly that she doesn’t want this life. She is leaving him for a wizard named Balthazar. She is running away to Brazil with him and changing her name to Carmine. She can’t stand living a life of routine and boredom any longer. She wants to leave her old life behind. She wants a divorce, and a pass to move to Brazil, and not to be a mother any more. If Percy is being honest with himself – which he tries to be, these days – he is not completely surprised.

Audrey does all of these things. She doesn’t want money or property or their daughters. She vanishes completely. Raising two small girls on his own is very difficult, but his family gather to support him in a way he still struggles to feel he deserves. But with their help, he starts to feel like he can balance again. The girls start to smile again. It’s ok.

Christmas shopping by himself in Diagon Alley – the girls are with George – he sees a familiar face. Oliver Wood is waving at him, grinning. They get a drink in the Leaky Cauldron, for old times’ sake. There’s a lot to catch up on. Wood’s Quidditch career is soaring. Percy pulls the picture of his girls from his wallet to show him and Wood coos while they wave at him. Percy admits that his wife left them. Wood admits that he can’t find the right person wherever he looks. Percy finds himself laughing a lot more than he expected to. A lot more than he has in a while, actually.

And after that catch-up drink, there’s another one. And another one. And another. And Percy leaves the girls with Ginny and goes to watch a Puddlemere game. And when they win, Oliver drags Percy out for a celebration drink. It goes on far longer than either of them had intended, this celebratory drink thing. He’s still sober enough to be shocked when Oliver lists forward towards his mouth and kisses him like it’s something inevitable.

It’s very awkward. Oliver’s face is flaming, he’s apologising, and Percy rushes away, bustling, explaining that he’s sorry, he just hasn’t ever – with a man –

Percy resolves not to contact Oliver again. It takes all of a few days until Percy finds himself itching to do exactly that. Everything feels oddly flat without the prospect of seeing him any more. And his mind goes back again and again to that kiss. No one had ever kissed him like that. After he’s put the girls to bed, he takes himself over to the mirror and gives himself a good hard stare. He’d never even considered men. Finding a girl seemed to be the thing to do, so he’d just gone along with that. Planned it out by the book, the way he did everything. It wasn’t as though kissing Audrey hadn’t been nice. Kissing Penelope had been nice. But all those kisses combined never came close to just one from Oliver Wood. He stares a bit more. He’s not quite thirty yet. He doesn’t look completely terrible. He could give this whole thing another go. If Percy is being honest with himself – which he tries to be, these days – that’s just what he wants to do.

He does look completely terrible. He sends a message to Fleur.

A few days later – when Fleur has been by and forcefully ensured that he doesn’t look anywhere near terrible – he meets up with Oliver again. Oliver is very sheepish. And Percy is very blunt. He often finds that directness stops him being nervous. This time, they part sober, and Percy – gathering his courage – kisses Oliver goodbye. Oliver lights up, and an answering thrill shoots through Percy, and when he picks the girls up from Bill and Fleur’s, Molly asks him why he is smiling so wide. Percy tells her airily that he’s happy to see her, but Fleur is smirking on the sofa and Bill has fixed him with a look that is very level and knowing and a bit proud.

And it goes on and on. Things are good, things are wonderful. Better than they’ve ever been. Oliver meets the girls and they love him. Percy takes him to the big Weasley family lunch one month and they love him. He fits in the way Audrey never had. George tells many, many ‘wood’ jokes. Oliver thinks they’re hilarious, and admittedly, Percy’d had no idea that life in the bedroom could be – well – like that. He turns his back for twenty seconds and Oliver has already managed to start a Quidditch game with his siblings and in-laws. Later, as the sun’s going down, he hears Molly’s shrieking laughter and goes outside to find Oliver and Charlie very gently tossing her back and forth over the small distance between them - ‘look, Daddy, I’m a Quaffle!’ Part of him bristles with protectiveness, but he knows neither of them would ever let her fall. And he is surprised by how much he trusts Oliver. And their laughter is warming him strangely. And if Percy is being honest with himself – which he tries to be, these days – he thinks he might be falling in love.

Edit: the thing that pisses me off is that Kamala has no reason to have golden eyes, have you ever seen an Indian person/any person with golden eyes? Usually when a character has those eyes, it's because of their lineage, like James Herondale's demon grandfather, Jace Herondale's angel blood, Hazel Levesque's dad is the Roman god of wealth (gold, diamonds, money, etc) and Laia of Serra's jinn queen ancestor. CC just couldn't write a poc character without giving them "exotic" features or a white name, disgusting. Not saying Hazel's eyes or Riordan describing her skin tone with food isn't racist, it is.

Reasons why you should read A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth (they/them):

All four mcs are LGBT+, wlw and mlm, childhood best friends to lovers, mutual pining, sunshine x grumpy...

It gives off City of Bones vibes, but with modern faeries with magic and who use technology A LOT and talk about serious topics (f you rich and privileged shits) like depression, death, drugs, etc. Also, there's a fandom made for a particularly handsome and clever Fae prince.

They/them and neo pronouns are mentioned!!

This book is funny, sassy, clever, intriguing and different. Especially Nausicaä (an immortal badass with smoke powers) is extremely sassy, swears a lot and causes a lot of chaos.

The characters are far from perfect, they struggle with mental health issues and their pasts, make bad decisions but also keep going.

The book has multiple POVs but the story picks up quickly and never gets boring, all characters have purpose and their own personalities that set them apart.

The character interactions are cute and you find yourself grinning widely because of a small gesture or action.

- alastair was on his way to self love, was finally in a good place, dyed his hair back, cut off charles, and tried to apologize, only to have it all come crumbling down and ran out of the room in tears

- alastair is so secure in the idea that he is truly despised that he assumed the thieves would laugh about elias’s alcoholism

- alastair had to deal with his fathers death and getting involved in a murder investigation only to get out and be manipulated into seeing charles

- alastair is now dealing with the death of his father, his pregnant mother, and the reputation of the family all alone because the one person he thought he could rely on ran off to paris leaving him alone once again

- alastair denied himself a relationship he desperately wanted partially because he believes he’s unlovable and partially to protect the person he adores

- alastair thought charles was a good partner beause alastair has never witnessed or experienced true unconditional selfless love

- pretty much everyone knew about elias’s alcoholism and did absolutley nothing, the thieves still continued to harass alastair 

- alastair has been was threatened with being thrown into the thames, told he deserves cruel treatment, and it was insinuated that alastair makes his sister uncomfortable, all in front of her during HER WEDDING (and she did practically nothing)

- according to cordelia elias “had broken his son’s heart in a dozen different ways”

- alastair is probably so well spoken because he had to take over official house correspondences while elias was too drunk

- alastair never had a childhood

- alastair has never had a true friend

- alastair is the only character to have been fully alone almost his entire life

- alastair is despied for things he did years ago as a child that he didnt even want to do in the first place

- he still blames himself and carries the guilt 

- hes been punishing himself since he was a child

- he still hates and punishes himself 

- alastair has been enduring abuse and trauma from the age of 10 and has been alone the entire time

- alastair does things for people all the time and all anyone does in return is take 

- people insult alastair even when hes not there

-alastair doesnt believe he can be loved

- im putting all of these in one place 

- thomas said he was thinking of how alastair must be feeling after the death of his father and alastair began to cry because he is just that unfamiliar with the concept of people caring about his feelings and he so fully believes that because of his past actions, (which he never even wanted to do in the first place) he does not deserve love

- thomas’s closest friend group created an environment where he could never them about the person he’s increasingly liked and loved since his first year of school, where he’s had to put everyone before himself for years, where he’s had to keep the affections he has for the only person hes ever loved a secret his the whole time

- alastair sees a travel year as a vacation when everyone else considers it work because his entire life has been such a draining job that working away from his normal life and the demands forced on him every day makes him feel like he’s on vacation and not on an official job posting

- alastairs friend group for 90% of his stay at the academy were the boys who had spent a year bullying and beating him into a person he despises

- alastair himself has said he has absolutely no friends and that sona wouldnt even question why he would be with christopher because she would be so delighted at the idea of him having a single friend

- alastair intended to protect cordelia from elias’s alcoholism forever, and never intended to tell anyone he was trailing thomas. he gives so much of himself to the people he loves in secret without ever expecting anything in return, we will never know just how much he has done for others because he never tells anyone how much he sacrifices, because everything comes from the unimaginable amount of love in his heart with expectation of nothing, kindness just for the sake of kindness

- matthew still partially blames alastair for what happened to the baby, and this will 100% eventually be revealed, most likely revealed to alastair with a cruel accusation of guilt, and alastair won’t think and say “you cannot blame me for your actions,” he will completely blame himself on top of everything else he blames himself for and all we can do is hope this amount of guilt won’t send all his progress and sanity crashing down

- the only person alastair can somewhat rely on, his sister, has literally said the words “I suppose you think I am terrible, still loving him” about him

theres so much more but honestly im too sad for this

It gets dark when I say it does." quote sounds super badass, like Alina saying it in a battle or to the Darkling but she actually says it after crying on the forest floor for hours after seeing monster!Nikolai and Mal has to come check up on her because it's night.

I just read this super sad post about this girl who’s asexual and married and everyone is basically telling her that she doesn’t deserve her husband/she’s just a prude/she should just do it anyway. So I want to tell you all right now that if people tell you this, or if they tell you you’ll never have a relationship, it is BULLSHIT. My husband is asexual and I’m not. He’s sex repulsed, we don’t have sex, we never have. And it doesn’t matter to me. You know what does? He does. His mental health and wellbeing matter to me. Because he is my best friend and he’s one of the smartest, kindest, funniest people I’ve ever met. And he’s had people tel him that he’s broken and it makes me SO ANGRY because they are WRONG. Being different doesnt mean you’re broken. If you don’t like sex/don’t want it/etc. Do not let anyone tell you that you’re inferior because you’re not. Do not let anyone convice you that you’ll never have a relationship because they’re wrong(if you want one). You are not broken, and it will be okay.
