(Official?) Farewell to Discourse

I took a hiatus, talked to some people I respect, and gave this a lot of thought, and this is what I’ve landed on: there is really no point in Doing the Discourse (TM) on the internet unless you enjoy debates for your own sake. 

I don’t. I’m non confrontational. I don’t like fights. I have really bad RSD due to ADHD and I already bounce between social anxiety and a full blown social phobia at any given time.

IT IS REALLY FECKING HARD TO GET STRANGERS TO LISTEN TO YOU ONLINE. I don’t mean win the gotdang argument, I mean actually have them change their minds from one opinion to the other. Most people just want to do the former and they will resort to really nasty tactics in order to facilitate this. There is also the group that is purely interested in mocking people (who are often kids/teens just being kids/teens) who just ... don’t get me started. And then another small group who genuinely want to have a conversation. The problem is that very few of the people THEY talk to are in the small group who wants to have a conversation with THEM. See the issue?

You can’t shock people out of their echo chamber or their beliefs. If that worked, there wouldn’t BE anymore internet discourse.

Basically ... I’ve done my research. I know where I stand on things, for the most part. And these days ... I’m feeling pretty apolitical just because my anxiety and depression got SO FUCKING BAD from being neck-deep in political crap.

What have I been doing in my time off from this blog? I joined a fandom, joined a little shipping community, and started writing fanfiction. I’m actually really happy with where I’m at. I’m not nearly as depressed and I have a nice little crew of online friends who support me doing writing and art. It’s been good for me.

This blog will stay up. I may use it occasionally to either post some hot take or support someone in need, as I’ve done in the past. I’ll likely post supportive posts here as well. But I won’t be seeking out discourse to post here any longer.

So, in closing ....

So I basically said, because they claim the pandemic is no biggie, that if they get their wish and things reopen, when they get it, i hope that if they die, it’s alone, because no one deserves to suffer with them, no one that didn’t choose it, including medical staff.

It was harsh, but so if throwing a few MILLON people on a funeral pyre so you can “keep the economy going!!”

I don’t think y'all understand the extent of death that this virus would cause. The death rate we have right now is with drastic measures mitigating it, but when you open up that will skyrocket - hospitals will be overrun and people who otherwise could survive the virus would not be able to get the treatment necessary to do so because there won’t be enough, people who have car crashes during that time will also be met with overrun hospitals, and even if they survive they’ll be at high risk of death if they catch the virus while there, same with strokes, heart attacks, etc, and even the people who survive the virus will have damage from it and be at an increased risk of needing to go back to hospitals that don’t have space for them. Millions of people dying, overrun hospitals, and a general atmosphere of fear and mourning will also tank the economy.

What do you think happens when everybody in the country is losing loved ones who otherwise wouldn’t die? When CEOs and employees are dying? When money is going to desperately trying to keep hospitals afloat? When the hospital staff start getting sick and dying from it? When we run out of space to store the dead and have to start leaving them in homes, hospitals, and cooled trucks? Do you think everyone gets up and goes to work in the car, knowing full well that if they crash it they die because the hospital has half staff, no beds, and a virus tearing through it? Do you think everyone shrugs off the knowledge that nan’s body is sat in bed in her flat decaying, because she’s three weeks down the waiting list for storage, and they just head into work as productive as ever?

This isn’t the death toll of the virus vs the death toll of economic crash - the economy is fucked either way, but if we mitigate the virus then we can actually dedicate resources to dealing with the economy instead of having to dedicate everything to trying to keep hospitals afloat. The overly simplistic view of this situation that enables the “we should prioritise the economy” mindset is ridiculous.

I forgot to clarify in my initial reblog: I’m replying to the situation in general because this conversation is going on in several posts, so it’s hard to find a single one that has all of the points contained within it, but I wanted to reblog this one because a lot of the others mention this “death wish” that, while mean, wasn’t some out of context “I hope you die” but was actually more of a “You’re so callous about human life that I hope other people are as callous about yours” - while I’m still against that (because I’m trying to live up to my cheesy ideals of being nice even in the face of cruelty), I figured the post with that explained was the best one to reblog so that nobody walked away with the wrong impression of what had happened there.

That’s not taking into account car crashes, strokes, heart attacks, etc, and the increased death rates from those things because every single hospital will be full of covid patients, many of whom won’t be getting the treatment that they need to survive. Also 10% is more than enough to overwhelm every morgue and place to store the dead. 10% means everybody in the country mourns somebody - I’m pretty sure you know more than ten people, right? 1% is a catastrophe that affects every area of life, every percentage above that exponentially increases the damage to every sector. Do y'all just see a “small” percentage and not compute how that looks in the real world and how that, happening all at once, impacts so many things?

I think you also have to think about where that 10% is coming from. Because it isn’t going to be evenly distributed around any one country or even the world. And if that 10% happens to be mostly located in, say, the food production industry such as farms and meat packing plants? Well, you just killed a decent portion of vital workers which certainly won’t do you any favours. Famine kills just as easily as any virus. And yes, I did pick that example because I’ve heard of some packing plants being shut down because of covid outbreaks and some other issues. And there’s not going to necessarily be an unemployed population that can fill those empty spaces. Pretty sure you wouldn’t want a carpenter performing brain surgery on you because health care workers are at a massive risk because of how close they have to be with infected with little to no protection. Which would be worse And that’s not taking into account that not all of the unemployed will be able to fill the roles they do qualify for just based on where they live and where the jobs end up being. 

Because, again, this shit isn’t going to be evenly distributed. Just looking at the numbers between, say, Canada and the US or Spain and France or India and China. Sure, there’s basic differences in population density and measures taken for prevention and a hundred other factors and I’m only looking overall rather than in specific places but with the numbers as they currently stand? Some places are going to be or have been hit much, much harder than others. And I don’t know about you but I’m not exactly keen on moving to a different country for work, particularly if that country’s health care is worse than mine.

And one thing I’ve been morbidly curious about since people started being idiots about wanting to “reopen the economy”? How the economy would fare if a huge portion of the workforce died and there was no one able to replace them.

This kind of real-world application of these numbers and the impact that this is having are so important to take into account… yet I’m seeing so many people stopping before this step when they think about this. It is a huge web of unprecedented impacts, and we NEED to be careful and thoughtful and reasonable. People in certain, often highly specialised, careers and in certain areas are going to be hit worse than others, and that’s already the case (like you mentioned with healthcare workers and people in the food industry, for example), let alone if we increase the rates.

I’d normally reblog to my main but I just plain don’t want to deal with the discourse over there. Anyway! Chronically ill person chiming in with some additional random thoughts — the thing that set off my chronic illness was H1N1, aka the swine flu outbreak in 2009. I was vaccinated but caught it anyway. And I’ve been fucking horrified at the amount of people who think, “Eh, most people recover from COVID!” Without realizing that illnesses like COVID can trigger chronic, permanent and debilitating illnesses in people.

And on the political side of things ... I’m a lefty Libertarian. I care a lot about government overreach. But I think you can keep watch on the government so they don’t pull a China and weld people into their goddamned homes, while also respecting that this pandemic is real, it’s killing people and causing lasting health effects, and we need to not do dumb shit like invite 20 people over for a party (looking at you, my mother’s dickass neighbors in San Antonio, one of whom is a fucking nurse and the other is a first responder. You are stupid and you’re gonna catch COVID).

It’s not a choice between dystopian fascist police state or pretending COVID doesn’t exist and going about life as normal. There’s middle ground where we work through this respectfully, together, making necessary concessions, while also telling the government they can’t take advantage of this crisis. I promise everyone they are not mutually exclusive.

I got smacked in the face with a memory and I want to share it because I think it illustrates a good point. (As a disclaimer ... I’m not actively doing discourse anymore. This has just been on my mind for a bit.)

When I was a wee babby freshman, my English class did this thing where we split into two groups and we’d take turns picking topics and having a civil debate over them. I was, at the time, REALLY plugged into social justice. I’d just come out as trans, I was doing a lot of protests, I was in a community service based club ... the works.

Anyway. There was a lot of stuff about Israel in the news and I’d suggested that as a topic while my group was huddled. And someone immediately said, “But (classmate in the other group) is from Israel.”

And I was like, Yes and?? Because it was kind of why I’d picked it. (I was being combative on purpose. You don’t have to tell me ... I know. I am facepalming as we speak.)

“You don’t want to make him feel bad, do you? It would put him in a really awkward position.”

And I immediately backed off after that, feeling pretty shitty.

But that interaction colored a lot of how I approached SJ later on. Because this happened in Texas and Texans are very live-and-let-live for the most part. They aren’t interested in getting into a yelling match with you. They do not want to inconvenience you or be inconvenienced by you. If you disagree on something, you agree to disagree. And maybe they come back a few days later with a clear head and say, “I’ve been thinking about that point you made and I think you’re right ...” But you certainly don’t come at someone trying to start shit like that. (I deserved every derogatory “Yankee” I got spat at me the first couple years I lived there.)

There is nothing to be gained by backing someone into a corner and browbeating them. There is nothing to be gained by being aggressive. I don’t care how right you think or know you are. You will not win people over if you act like that.

I just wanted to vent / blabber if thats ok. I'm not sure who i am anymore. I've had a couple periods of months-long doubting my identity out of nowhere and being distressed about myself / it. I found even just thinking to myself that im genderfluid or something helps ease the discomfort bc suddenly I don't feel like I'm doing something wrong, im more doing my own thing. Gonna second the therapist. But I definitely went through the same sort of thing. In the interim between thinking I might be trans and seeing a therapist, I played around with my presentation, had people use a different name and they/them pronouns for me, and basically explored how these things made me feel and WHY (the why is important).

This is just me personally, but ... I really don’t consider any questioning person to be appropriating. If you’re exploring and trying to figure yourself out, I think that’s very fine and healthy.

today I’ve been especially curious where the whole queer taboo came from and I’m trying to figure out when exactly it started being a thing.

According to this google trends, the phrase “is queer a slur”, there were no results until May 2013. Now, I’m not implying “queer” isn’t used as a slur or hadn’t been considered a slur until then, but SOMETHING happened in May 2013 that caused a bunch of people to search that.

Similarly, the oldest posts I’ve seen tagged on tumblr with the phrase “q slur” have been from 2013, and have so far not found any earlier posts with the tag. (and really I have no way of knowing if the tag was added at a later time) So far what I’ve found is the actual censoring/starring of queer and use of “q slur” has been predominately from 2016 onwards, and people that used the tag before then would frequently use it as a catch-all term or to refer to themself. It wasn’t until the past few years that those people started telling others not to use it to refer to other people.

I am just so, so fascinated as to what exactly happened that caused this shift and I can’t find it

I joined tumblr in 2011 and this sounds pretty accurate and familiar. I was here a few years before the ‘queer is a slur’ crowd came out of seemingly nowhere (2016 sounds right). When I joined here everyone openly accepted asexuals as part of the LGBTQIA community.

It was before 2016 though that there started to be discourse about whether asexual experiences were enough like other LGBT+ experiences for them to be allowed to reclaim the word queer for themselves. I think that is when I first can remember people beginning to refer to it as a slur. (I feel like that is where the idea came from that the criteria for being a part of the LGBT+ community was oppression rather than sexual orientation.)

And then one day BAM suddenly not only could aces not use the word queer but they weren’t even a part of the community at all according to these people.

I never really heard “queer is a slur” until after the “Does the A stand for Ally or Ace” discourse. Then I started to hear “can aces use queer?” which seemed like a weird question, then it seemed like a flood of “queer is a slur”. Almost like people wanted to shut down the term entirely instead of having an open community.

Yes, this fits with my experiences online and offline over the past 10-15 years. I don’t recall anyone ever batting an eye at “queer” during the LJ era of social justice rhetoric*. It was understood that “queer theory” and “queer studies” were the acceptable terms for talking about our issues in an academic context (and those fields were pioneered by and populated with people who themselves identified as queer). “Queer Eye” was a show on television (that I didn’t personally watch), and people might have grumped about the stereotyping, but not the title. The first nonbinary people I encountered on the internet most commonly referred to themselves as genderqueer. My queer friends in their late 30′s and 40′s who never used Tumblr are absolutely fucking baffled when I try to relate the existence of this discourse to them. (One of them is currently involved with a panel for queer YA authors, and yes, it’s called that, and no one in that particular sphere even questions it. It’s just… not a thing).

(*if I had to guess, asking LJ ppl in the year 2006-ish to not call you, specifically, “queer” would have mostly got an “oh okay”, going in with 2019 Tumblr style “queer is a slur!” rhetoric and arguing with people about it would have probably gotten you featured on a drama/wank/lulz community)

The main slur-related issue in the early 2000′s was trying to get people to stop using “gay” in a derogatory way. And guess what, those efforts were focused on the straight people who were using the word offensively, not the people who identified as gay! Gay (and lesbian/”lezzo”) absolutely was the go-to word for homophobic abuse of me and my peers.

So yes, I have personally watched this word go from an accepted community term to a battleground in a relatively short space of time, and even if you don’t like the word or want to use it, I think that should make you a bit uncomfortable. That ten years from now people could decide your identity has problematic implications and really it’s much more reasonable for you to use these other terms that people ten years younger than you think are better. And some of them will be polite but condescending about it, while others will literally call you a freak or say that you probably aren’t a real LGBT+ person if you use [identity term that bothers some people].

There’s people in the notes claiming this is people assuming correlations = causation. But that’s false! We already knew the “q slur” phenomenon as it exists today* was born from TERF rhetoric. This isn’t the basis of this knowledge, it’s additional evidence.

I’m absolutely going to get flack for this but ... This has been bothering me for a while because while in high school in the American northeast in the days prior to this discourse, queer was a very common word to use as a catch-all. When I went to college in he southwest, it was STILL a common catch-all (along with QuILTBAG, which I think is adorable). I can second that “gay” was the term spoken with the most derision at the time, along with “fag” and “dyke”. I still know people who use all of those words for themselves in either an empowering or affectionate way.

I get that people might have issues surrounding it and that’s valid. But it’s also been reclaimed for quite a while in many places and people can’t deny that. That’s the whole reason why we have Queer Studies, etc.

Also I’m going to toss out that I really hate the “Why would you want to denote yourself as other anyway?? Shouldn’t you just want to be normal??” argument. For many, it’s not about that — it’s about a reclaimed term that now has taken on a different meaning so that it easily encompasses the community without having to list everyone. For others it could just be that yes, we’re a minority. And isn’t diversity supposed to be about finding common ground while also celebrating how we’re different?

Guys. I saw half a dozen “the problem with kids today is that nobody uses spanking!!”/variants before my brain oozed out my ears.

I wonder if far left authoritarians and far right authoritarians REALIZE how they sound? That, just by the cadence and tone and word usage, I could tell you whether a person ranting about Lima beans is one or the other.

One side thinks the problem with everything is that kids today are too soft and entitled and shoulda got whupped more often. The other thinks the issue is that certain groups lack the capacity for empathy and also that the only way to stop said groups is by gratuitous violence.

Look the problem is that a lot of people are being willingly lead by the nose, have no critical thinking skills, and are criminally violent. Get a hobby. Question authority. Invest in therapy.
