yeah yeah rainbow capitalism is bad and whatever but like. when I was a child, being pro gay was not the popular or lucrative choice. I'm happy that times have changed.

I miss rainbow capitalism. I do. I miss when it felt like public opinion was still pro gay. I understand it was always an empty gesture, but it mattered in a sense of knowing how socially acceptable being queer is. If that makes sense.

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

he was actually a forestry graduate student who was doing research on bristlecone pines (Pinus langaevea) and got his increment borer stuck in the tree. this tool costs almost $800, so he asked the forest service if he could cut down the tree to recover the tool. after cutting it down, it became apparent that the tree was actually the oldest living organism. ever. (around 8,000 years old). so, not just some asshole. the guy feels extremely guilty and has even broken down in tears during an interview about the accident

So after the grad student cut down the tree and discovered it was the oldest tree in the world he quit studying forestry and went to study salt flats (can’t cut down the oldest trees in the world on salt flats no siree none of that happening) and he was being interviewed about his research, but in the middle of the interview the reporter just stops and says “wait aren’t the guy that…”

And he just takes off running. Literally. Turns around and runs across the salt flats away from the interview and I feel so bad for him but I can’t help but start crying I’m laughing so hard about it imagine a guy high tailing it across salt flats away from a dude with a recorder

The Fake Divination Offense - Sara Raasch

The first book in a long time where I was thinking “please don’t be over please don’t be over.” when the audio book got to the last line.

These are my immediate first thoughts after finishing the book. It took me less than a week to read, unheard of for me, and I was so eager I read the book and listened to the audio book at the same time choosing whichever one was accessible just to keep reading. Although I did prefer the audio book, leaves nothing to the imagination…

My two favorite parts of the Magic & Romance books is 1- unpacking trauma and getting to recognize my own Mental Illnesses and struggles in the characters while watching them work through them and 2- the best sex scenes i’ve ever read.

With Seb in Entanglement I got to see a deeply familiar depiction of anger issues that felt SO so incredibly cathartic. And now I got to see someone so deeply wracked with guilt have his whole world of people and friends tell him he was allowed to have what he wanted and be unashamed to take it. My Therapist Will Be Hearing About This.

The fact that it’s all in the context of a DnD based world is just icing on the cake. To have these books connected to the hobby that has given me so many friends and so much confidence in my own life is serendipitous. I am so glad to have found these books and I can’t wait to reread The Fake Divination Offense (once I buy it hard copy, I immediately ended my library hold early I am jealous the next person gets to experience this for the first time.)

Ok The Fake Divination Offense (which I just finished and oh my goddds).

I'm still feeling that bubbly ahhhh kind of feel. It was so many parts emotionally wrecking and healing.

What I really enjoy about these books is that emotionally healing after trauma is never a linear process, and the fact that thats touched on so many times is comforting. To write how setbacks dont necessary negate any progress made is important to realize, and I appreciate the way it shows that healing isn't always a straight line.

Also the points about letting yourself need others. The point that we equate strength and growth to what we can do without, instead of understanding that growth can also mean letting yourself need others, or allowing yourself to rely on someone else to carry your stress when you cant do it on your own. Likewise what it takes to let someone in on your hardships without worrying about being too much for them.

Random notes:

The line "Because I fucking am the god of strength" went so damned hard. Like the amount of hype I felt behind that sentence was crazy. Like I cant even begin to express how I felt reading that line.

I want to see Seb & Thio get married. Like so badly. And the whole talk about having kids thing made my heart so happy. Like my boys! They're growing and working to surpass the emotional trauma they had growing up. I'm so proud of them.

(Also loved seeing how domestic they were in this, like look at them, being all happy and shit.)

Another side note is my brain is so out there. So much so I honestly thought by the end of the book they were actually going to summon Galaxrien, and we would find out the whole "enemies" thing with Urzoth was actually a lovers spat/fight misunderstanding that got way out of hand and twisted over time. Like honestly I knew it wouldn't be the case but dang if it would have made a fun twist xD
