Review: Teddy and the Bully Bar Power Lunch Crunchy Brussels Sprouts

today’s sprouts are brought to you by the power lunch menu at Teddy and the Bully Bar in DuPont. If you can’t read the microprint in this photo - the “crunchy” sprouts come with cranberry goat cheese (that suspiciously pink substance on top of the sprouts) And an apple walnut vinaigrette.

Well - my preference is for “crunchy” to actually be crunchy. These were not crunchy. Although at some point in time they probably were. I think we could have done without the cranberry goat cheese. It didn’t seem to add much and was more like a yogurt. The walnuts did add a nice crunch but I couldn’t bring myself to finish a bowl of crunchy sprouts

Overall, a solid average on these. My lunch companions had the butternut squash risotto and that was outstanding so, maybe better off exploring the rest of the menu here

Sprout of the Day: Sprout Fried Rice

Even though my CSA has yet to provide me with sprouts (right now it’s always Turnip Time, which is a whole other story...), their Pinterest page has such a killer selection of posts. Today’s Sprout is everyone’s favorite takeout staple, with a twist. HOW TASTY does that look??

I knew they came on the stalk things, but I think I always imagined either some type of root, or the stalks being branches on some glorious sprout tree. I’m having a similar moment to when I found out how Pineapples grow. Check it out.

Sprout of the Day: Brussels Sprouts Nachos

Well folks, todays sprouts of the day are brought to you by Simple Bites.... Brussels Sprouts Nachos!

Adding sprouts to anything is clearly a great decision (but as Sprouts Club recently discovered, adding anything to sprouts is not always a great decision - I’m looking at you chopped-hard-boiled-eggs-topped-sprouts-at-graffiato

BUT the real purpose of this sprouts of the day is to prepare you for the next round of sprouts test kitchen - coming to you live after Thanksgiving...where we take sprout nachos where no one has taken them before.  DUN DUN DUN STAY TUNED.  In the meantime, chop up some sprouts and top off your normal nachos for an added health bite.

Sprouts Review: Graffiato

Since we started this, everyone’s been telling us “OMG YOU HAVE TO GO TO GRAFFIATO.” Their rendition of Sprouts even made the WaPo’s 2014 “Brussel Sprouts Crawl” list, so we knew that as soon as sprouts were back on the menu, we’d have to go to Graffiato. 

Last night we got there (same day they launched the new menu, oddly enough #crazyrandomhappenstance) and...well, we’re a little bummed.

Ok, they look lovely, but the EGG. Usually I love hardboiled egg. I will eat them plain all the time. My favorite emoji is the fried egg.  But here there’s just SO MUCH egg. All over. Adding so little. 

We also agreed the honey sauce overpowered the sprout flavor. It was just too sweet. Overall, this one yielded a solid “meh” from both of us. They land at the #5 spot, behind Lincoln. Sorry, all, but the #SproutsMagic just wasn’t happening for us.

(That pepperoni sauce tho. Girlllllllll.)

Brussels Sprouts With Pancetta Recipe

This recipe came to The Times in 2003 from Suzanne Goin, the Los Angeles restaurateur whose braised vegetables are a hallmark of her cuisine It is a marvelously flavorful dish, rich with garlic and salty pancetta It is one to keep.

Sprout of the day comes c/o the office Vegetarian Lunch Club (where about 85% of the members eat meet). So amped to try this one out!

Sprouts of the Day: Mark Bittman - Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Garlic

 Alright, NYT Food got my attention this weekend with this recipe for a classic Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Garlic, care of Mark Bittman.

I made some revisions to the recipe, notably added somewhere between double/triple the amount of garlic, and NO REGRETS BECAUSE ROASTED GARLIC IS AMAZING. I had intended to parcel this quantity out over a few days (because, meal prepping is a thing that I’m doing now), but couldn’t stop eating right out of the oven, and now I have no more sprouts. Between the garlic, the sprouts themselves, and then all the little lone sprouts leaves that turned into sprouts CHIPS (which i’m going to consciously create at some point).

The recipe is amazingly simple - EVOO, Sprouts, S&P, garlic, heat, and a trusty cast iron skillet- and legit result is a top 5 sprouts recipe. My preference is on crispiness, so I tend to not like sauce-heavy sprouts dishes (Except Red Hen. That sauce was out of this world)

TL;DR - crack sprouts. Can’t stop/won’t stop level of deliciousness. Plan to eat all at once and then some.

New Review: Barrel

The picture may not be great,  but holy mother of all that is green and sprout-like, the sauce on this CANNOT be beat. I think it’s the fish sauce that gives it the extra kick. Sorry, Right Proper, but you’ve been bumped. Barrel goes to #2!

Sprout of the Day comes in the form of this Acorn Squash & Sprout bake that’s paleo, vegan, and totally delicious. The key here is the sauce, which basically contains every ingredient in my kitchen, but was worth it!

Airport sprouts Courtesy of Kapnos Taverna in terminal C at DCA. Crispy sprouts with coriander, honey, and a yogurt sauce Crispness level good - but way too much honey. I like my sprouts salty rather than sweet. Also the honey started to ruin the crispness after a few minutes which was definitely disappointing I don’t have other Airport sprouts to compare to, but I would rate these decent....as airport sprouts. They Do not compare to other/restaurant sprouts though - the non airport competition has these beat by a long run

Have not yet tested these ourselves, but our sprout senses indicate that they will be amazing...and look at that picture!  

Plus drunken makes everything better - most of the time. But pizza usually cures those other times. First up for sprout test kitchen - pizza sprouts?
