FND is not psychological.
PT: FND is not psychological. End PT
Yes, in the past FND, formerly known as conversion disorder, was considered entirely psychological, but new research proves that theory wrong.
Brain networks with FND misfire in predictable and measurable ways. In recent scans, researchers found that the brains of people with FND have overactivity in limbic regions, under-activity in motor control regions, communication disruptions between intention and action, and abnormal connectivity in attention networks.
Advanced imaging also shows meseauble differences in their brain structure, including changes in grey matter volume, in regions tied to movement, attention and emotional regulation, as well as alterations in white matter pathways that connect motor planning to executon and differences in volume and region in particular reigons. These structuarl changes were significant enough that a machine learning model sucsessfuly distinguished the MRI scans scans of brains with FND from healthy controls with 80% accuracy.
All this cosidered FND is not a psychological disorder. And while trauma and stress can be one of many contrubiting factors, they are not the root cause of the condition.
Been unable to go to school since Tuesday as I keep having seizures and don't have a seizure plan, and because of that, if I have a seizure in class they're going to call an ambulance-- which sucks because my insurance is no longer covering any of my fucking treatment because somehow NONE of it is "medically necessary" anymore, so I'll be in even more abysmal medical debt if they call one <33
so now I'm trapped in my house depressed and seizing and unable to attend classes <333
I love America <333
“idk man ive been having some weird neurological symptoms lately im not sure why” <- person with neurological symptom disorder
FND is full body disorder. Drop attacks, tremours, gait issues, limb weakness, distonia, tics.
FND is full sensory disorder. Numbness in limbs, feel like limb isnt part of body, visual symptoms such as snow or double vision.
Cognitive disorder. Memory issues, dissociation, focus. It affect brain in entirety.
Speech problem. Physical and cognitive.
Seizures. Dissociative, functional, epileptic. Some caused by FND, some comorbids.
It cause many problems, not comprehensive list.
Fellow disabled folks who struggle to walk (cld be sometimes cld be all the time!)
Sitting in bed rotting on a phone or tablet endlessly watching stuff can feel depressing and worsen mood
SO
Here's some things to do (on your phone or from your bed) that are low energy/effort
Some of these things may seem obvious however this is a reminder that they are possible to do if you let yourself
Organise/re-organise spotify, pinterest and other platforms you use to curate interests
Colour - you can download blank PDFs and either print them if you can hold a pen OR open them in any free drawing app (can be done with a fill tool to avoid holding a pen if thats too difficult)
Reading - if you cant or struggle to read listen to an audiobook OR use a screenreader on any platform that has your favourite books or fics
Journalling - there are journalling apps as well as physical journals that you can decorate yourself!
Gentle exercises - sitting for hours at a time isn't great for joints and there are great influencers out there with low mobility friendly exercises to keep joints moving and blood flowing
Write or play music
I greatly appreciate any additions!
You don't have to be disabled physically to find this useful, maybe you have depression or low energy but want to have tasks to do!
Apologies if this is not the right blog to be asking, but I figured the best place to go was from people who actually experience these things.. I suppose the background summary here is that, someone has been spreading a lot of hate and harassment towards other people, and when pretending to be the victim, said person claimed to have a "2-3 hour seizure." From what I've looked up that's not possible?? Even 5 minute long seizures are dangerous and life threatening, right?? No way someone survived completely undamaged after a 2-3 hour seizure, if that was even possible, right? Essentially- I am disgusted at the idea this person is potentially/possibly lying about experiencing seizures to get pity points on the internet. That certainly would be ableist to fake shit other people genuinely struggle with just to win an argument online.
Hi anon 👋
I think this is coming from a genuine place so I will give a genuine answer, unfortunately you are misinformed.
First, I will start out by agreeing that yes faking seizures or anything really is an incredibly shitty thing to do.
However, I do not know this person or their situation so I personally cannot nor do I feel comfortable saying that based on this they are faking. I’m not one to fake claim to begin with.
This person could be dealing with epileptic or non epileptic seizures both of which I explain here.
Starting with personal experiences:
I myself have had an hour and a half seizure (documented in the hospital)
Here’s a small snippet of just one of my seizures that lasted over an hour that required me to be brought into the hospital by ambulance (rescue meds failed).
I did not suffer any brain damage.
I also personally know other epileptics and non epileptics who have had hour longer plus seizures, even 3 hour seizures and ended up in comas and did not suffer brain damage. It’s definitely possible.
Official Sources:
Medlink Neurology: what kind of seizure was this person having? absence seizures in status epilepticus have been known to last for up to days.
Cleveland Clinic: Functional seizures are normally characterized to be 10 minutes+ surpassing the status epilepticus range
Healthgrades: Direct quote “Seizures can last seconds, hours, or even days.” with or without harm? That depends on the seizure and the person’s situation but it’s medically possibly.
All in all - we cannot assume.
I personally have not experienced brain damage but I have experienced things such as:
Again, screenshots come from my personal medical chart. I’m sharing it purely for educational purposes.
We also should not be fakeclaiming or judging people’s conditions.
Is harassment and hate shitty absolutely? I never condone that behavior. However, I do not condone misinformation or accusing people of faking an event or illness just because of their behavior.
Seizures as a whole are incredibly stigmatized and I do not like to continue that cycle.
I may not understand psychosomatic disorders, but damn, people definitely should stop stigmatizing them. Like, why the fuck it's called pseudo just because it has mental origin? You wouldn't call someone depression pseudo, so why the fuck you're calling functional symptoms pseudo?
Guys with FND/Conversion disorder/Idk, whatever you call it, you're completely valid. I genuinely don't care about your disease being psychogenic, you're still a legend with completely real symptoms, just not psychical origin.
