Monolingual people: what is the primary reason you DON'T know another language?

Anon is kinda concerned with the state of the world, considering how this blog's language-related polls show that the majority of the audience is monolingual. We know English is statistically the most occuring native language on tumblr, but surely not all of the monolinguals are native English speakers? Do people just not pay attention in foreign language classes? Anon knows languages are not as fascinating to everyone as they are to anon, but surely they're not that much of an outlier as a polyglot?

I, a completely monolingual person (not due to lack of effort. i think i’m cursed), have stolen phrases from other languages completely accidentally. How did i find this out you may ask?

I said “siéntate” to someone who actually spoke spanish (it means sit, btw). She then proceeded to talk to me for a full five minutes before i could interrupt and say that i don’t speak spanish.

she was shocked for a multitude of reasons. One, it’s not like “sit” is just one of those spanish words everyone knows. Two, i used the slang version of it.

edit: oof. so as i stated, im monolingual. it has come to my intention that it is the informal version of sit rather than slang. i don’t speak the language and assumed when my friend explained it that is meant slang rather than informal. thanks for the correction. i’m keeping what i originally said though. Listen to people in the reblogs or comments who sound like they know what they’re doing. I don’t.

Us Americans do not realize how unusual it is to only speak one language, and I'm curious to know other bilingual/polyglot peeps casually hang out here. Capping it at 3 is probably too low but, alas, I only have so many bubbles.

American here refers to if you identify as American.

Fluent here refers to if you can effectively intake the language (in whatever form is applicable) and understand it with ease, as well as produce it in a similar fashion and native speakers/signers understand you.
