Being nonbinary is years of watching trans discourse about trans men and trans women and how their experiences define the trans community while being shut out of the story because you aren't "really trans" (yes, I'm old enough to remember when a not insignificant percentage of the trans "community" argued that nonbinary people didn't fit under the trans umbrella), only to suddenly get the script flipped and now be viewed as the "privileged" category of trans people that society caters to while still actively oppressing the "real" trans community (which, depending on who you're talking to, is only trans women or may also include trans men).

Meanwhile, the vast majority of (cis and binary trans) folks only remember us when they want to make us a punchline.

I am not a man, I am not a woman, I am just a human, a person, maybe even a creature. Though I have somewhat of a connection to masculinity and femininity, I am neither.

TERFs be like “there’s no wrong way to be a woman!” so great I’m doing that by getting top surgery, going on Testosterone, presenting as male, being a man, using male terms, supporting other trans people including transfems, and going by he/him pronouns.

If there’s no “wrong way” then that’s a right way!

Tonight two people asked me if I’m a man or a women, I am glad I apparently still look androgynous enough to confuse people and not as much like a man as I thought.

I'm usually completely fine with the fact that most people, upon meeting me, assume I am just a very very very gay (probably cis) man.

I'm not actually any of those specific things—I'm afab and nonbinary and pansexual—but I was once on T for several years and it did its thing, and I've had top surgery, and I'm 5'9", and really it's an entirely understandable assumption. And most of the time I'm content with the fact that this random stranger I'm just meeting for the first time can obviously tell I'm some kind of queer person. The specifics being off really doesn't bother me.

But occasionally I get slapped with the reality that I don't read as trans to other trans people 99% of the time. And that does bother me. I've been living as an out trans person in the world for a long time now, and I really wish other trans people could see me.
