Our #corn harvest season has finally ended with the milling of our native seeds. We have kept our seeds for about 10,000 years but their genetic diversity is being treated by #GMO trying to be introduced to Mexico. Mexico produced 26.7 million tons for the 2016-2017 season. About 10 million tons are produced in small peasant holdings but the country also imports 10 million tons of subsidized cheap corn from the USA. In the article 'Pervasive presence of transgenes and glyphosate in maize-derived food in Mexico', Gonzales Ortega et al. (2017) point out that transgenic maize varieties, produced abroad under industrial agriculture are finding their way into the food manufacturing networks in Mexico. Last year we could not sell all of our corn because of the cheap corn being imported into Mexico. Considering that we have the lowest wages under #NAFTA and that families have to make ends meet they are quite literally forced to buy tortillas from the tortillerías and tortilla makers that have cheap imported corn. We need to start a campaign to have a #crowdfunding to counter the US subsidies and help small farmers sell their corn locally. In return Maybe we could send you a few KG of hand made, organic, native corn tortillas. Who is in for the deal?
