Rogue subclasses are pretty simple and fun to make. One thing that I like about rogues is that they can be very versatile and unique from one another. They are more specialists than anything, and they don't have to be thieves or criminals.

This subclass if for a bounty hunter like character archetype, and adds a new weapon/damage mechanic: traps, which can do a variety of damage as well as status effects once activated. Additionally, the bounty hunter gets proficiency with nets and heavy crossbows.

Updated Roguish Archetype: The Masquerader

You are a cunning social manipulator. Your focus is on people, your outward appearance, and the art of misdirection.  Trick your opponent into believing you to be their ally, then stab them in the back both literally and metaphorically with this devilish Rogue archetype!  Changelog:  - Features updated to reference a single Masquerader save DC - Deceptive Fighting reduced from 1 minute to single round, and limited to 30 feet. Upsides: now also prevents reactions, and attacking no longer ends the effect. - Gentle Twist changed from auto-crit to max damage, which is so much better - All other features rewritten to be simpler and less magical. They hav not changed drastically

Subclass: The Corvid

Some - but not all - rogues are indeed the murderous, greedy creatures generaly stereotyping make them out to be. But some would rather align themselves with the ebb and flow of life, using their ability to form this energy to their will to heal others or do good. This means they are also able to hit where it hurts, however, making rogues that follow the way of the Corvid doubly dangerous... and doubly useful.

Roguish archetype where you can use thieves’ cant to convey secret messages to creatures who don’t know the language, using clever innuendo. Intended targets understand your insinuations. Other creatures must succeed on an Intelligence check contested by your Charisma score to get what you’re implying.

Week 1: Unity Day 2: The Deserter

The Deserter is narratively the black sheep for this week’s theme, but Mechanically, it fits right in. With access to the protection fighting style and feature that draws reaction attacks, the Deserter has the potential to lean into a more support oriented style of combat.

This Roguish archetype comes from a simple desire: to be a Rogue with heavier equipment. Of course, you can’t build a whole subclass off of that, so this one has been a struggle for me.

One of my friends suggested charging, and I was reminded of The Banner Saga’s Backbiter (the capstone’s namesake), as well as 3.5′s scout. The extra armor class you get from your heavier equipment is offset by the risk-reward mechanic of False Engagement, while Swift Maneuver lets you act as more of a bullying force on the battlefield. All told, the Deserter Roguish archetype gives you a very different experience than the other Rogue subclasses, with a focus on up front and gutsy combat. A quick aside: Thanks to some pretty tough goings-on in my life at the beginning of this week, I’m a little behind schedule. Yesterday I spoke a bit about hybrid subclasses and I thought I might throw something together to give everyone a better idea of what I have in mind. This is just an example, and a rough one that I put together in like 2 hours, but I think it will serve to get the idea across pretty well.

The roguish archetype in this example is a hybrid of rogue and barbarian. While built on the chassis of the rogue, its features are built in a way to make it function similarly to a barbarian. Its desperate brigand feature works like the barbarian’s rage, it’s encouraged to step away from the rogue’s niche of finesse weapons only, and the skittish feature channels the barbarian’s primal instinct feature. You could in a similar vein create a barbarian subclass that got a sneak attack adjacent ability and stealth bonuses that would make them play more similarly to a rogue without the need to add confusion with a multiclass. I’ll certainly be doing more of these in the future and want to know which combinations of classes the community thinks would be the most fun. I’ve gotten suggestions for barbarian/druids, sorcerer/warlocks, and some others so keep ‘em coming.

Roguish Archetype: Thug

Howdy again y'all! This here is an archetype I've always kind of loved. Most "thug" type rogues take a level or two in fighter, but to me, that doesn't really get the whole "menacing enforcer" vibe across as well as something like this. This archetype is about cracking skulls and giving off menacing vibes. Stealth is not their strong suit.
