Every time i see this post going around, i have to bring it up again: there are absolutely corrupt firefighters. There are tons of firefighters who are racist and act neglectfully in protecting the lives and property of people of color in their community. There are homophobic firefighters who won’t lift a finger to help LGBT victims of fire. And as my mother directly experienced as a victim, there are firefighters who are only concerned with where their money comes from, and will let the homes of poor people burn down and then go through the remains busting up things that survived the blaze.
It’s not anywhere near as bad on an institutional level as policing, but there are corrupt professional firefighters, and corrupt volunteer firefighters.
And they’re probably in your community.
additionally, so many firefighters commit arson that there is a Wikipedia article about it. according to that article, about 100 firefighters per year are convicted of arson in the US alone. that’s convictions, not how many times it happens.
So who the FUCK am I supposed to idolize fuck. The development of DID/OSDD
DID/OSDD develops as a reaction to trauma and develops before the age of 6 to 9.
This does NOT mean you have to be aware of your alters at that age. This does NOT mean that you cannot develop new alters after that age. This does NOT mean between the age of 6-9. This does NOT mean *all* alters form in childhood.
It just means that the first “split” in the personality happens then, because after those ages the brain is developed and can no longer learn the “trick” of dissociating to the degree of creating alters. Once your brain knows the trick, you can develop alters for the rest of your life when there is more trauma or stress or another reason for another alter to develop.
It is absolutely normal to only realize you have alters (way) later in life. Personally I was around 24 when it first became a thing - but it’s perfectly normal to only start learning about it way, way later in life. DID/OSDD can often go undetected for a very long time and/or get diagnosed as other mental illnesses (e.g. schizophrenia, psychosis, PTSD, personality disorders).
I’m writing this because I’ve seen quite some misconceptions floating around on tumblr, like people being worried that they can’t have DID/OSDD “because I’m already 15 and I just learned about my alters”, or people thinking that it has to develop between the ages of 6-9. Please educate each other! There is enough stigma and misconceptions out there already. If you have any questions, feel free to message me (although I’m not a professional!).

I keep trying to explain this to people but this post is written much more concisely than anything I’ve written.
This is a good post but one part is kind of misleading I think! Splitting is not really a “trick” that’s learned, it’s more of a dysfunction. Our brains don’t know how to properly process experiences because those parts of our brain responsible for it are stunted. That’s also why DID/OSDD is caused by repetitive childhood trauma, because we don’t have a chance to process it, there’s more trauma happening, and our brain dissociates from it so much that we split alters in order to survive. And that’s also why people without DID or OSDD can’t have alters, because those parts of their brains are not stunted like ours.
It’s ok to call it a trick if you want but “trick” makes me think of something like a cool party trick and it just rubbed me the wrong way idk. Wanted to make a little addition jic people might think it was actually meant like that. 😭
I don’t think OP meant “trick” in the literal sense? I think they just meant something more like “the capacity to split”. I read the quote marks around “trick” as quibble quotes, as in the writer didn’t intend for the reader to interpret the word as a literal trick.
I think this is a good addition though.
