Reminders Of Him

Chapter 3

This is for Daminette December 2025 day 15 (Enemies? No we're lovers!)

Marinette sighs unhappily, clutching her throbbing head. She was going to school for the first time since Adrien died. She had refused to go for the past two weeks, afraid of the little traces of Adrien left behind in school. Marinette figured it was high time she went back to school, at least then, she could ease some of her parents' worries.

"Good Morning maman, papa," Marinette greets, planting a kiss on both of her parents' cheeks. Her mother pulls her into a bear hug, checking if she was still running a fever in the process. Marinette had fallen ill in the previous week and the doctor said it was because she hadn't eaten properly in the past two weeks.

Her maman was so worried the whole time because Marinette could barely get out of bed. It made her feel so guilty she actually started eating more, even though she could barely stomach anything.

Her papa hands her a thermos flask full of coffee, which she really needed if she was going to survive the day. She thanks her papa, hugging both her parents' one more time before stepping out of the bakery, trying to feel strong.

She takes in the instant fresh air that hits her and sighs, longingly. She hadn't actually been outside the bakery, unless she was visiting Adrien's grave. She sighs again, trying not to cry at the reminder and starts making her way to school.

"Adrien!! I've told you not to joke about your death you stupid cat!" Marinette whisper shouts, chasing Adrien. Adrien lets out a loud laugh and runs when she starts pursuing him. "I'm sorry Mari!! I was just joking!" Adrien shouts turning back once, only to find out that she was very close to catching him. He runs even faster, still laughing.

"I think you may be out of shape Mari, you can't even keep up with me anymore!" Adrien teases, throwing a wink back at Marinette. He soon regrets it tho as he can feel Marinette closing up on him. 

"I am gonna skin you alive when I catch you, you stupid boy!" Marinette huffs out, trying and failing to hold a laugh.

"When? More like if! You need to get back in shape in order to catch me!" Adrien says, still trying to poke fun at Marinette. 

Unfortunately for him tho, he doesn't get another word in before Marinette pounces on him, tackling him to the ground. Adrien laughs, tired and out of breath. He holds his hands up in surrender, easily submitting. Marinette laughs, pulling him in by the collar. She's about to kiss the hell out of him when a little boy interrupts the moment. 

"Mummy those two are fighting! Are they enemies?!" the boy asks his mother with wide eyes. Adrien simply chuckles, he sits up, taking Marinette's hand and plants a kiss on her palm. "Enemies? No we're lovers!" Adrien says with a smile so bright the boy looks momentarily dazed. Marinette turns red instantly as she processes Adrien's words.

She can't believe he just said that! And to a little boy no less! Adrien notices her red face and pecks her cheek, grinning widely. Are you feeling shy M'lady?" He asks, whispering in Marinette's ear. 

Marinette buries her face in his arms, trying to hide how mortified she feels. She hears Adrien's chuckle and turns red once more!

Marinette blinks slowly as she regains focus and realises that she's reached school. The one place she's come to hate. A lot. She takes in a deep breath and tries to calm herself down. She won't allow Lila or Alya or anyone to get to her. Not today. She pulls the hood on her hoodie on, and walks into school, keeping her head down all the way.

She had arrived at school late even though she left the bakery early. Teachers barely did anything now even if she came late. Coming late had become a 'Marinette thing' most teachers seemed to stay far away from her no thanks to Lila.

"-rinette!! Are you even listening to me?" Marinette jolts out of her thoughts at the sound of Mme Bustier's voice. "Are you planning to stand there for the whole day or are you going to come in to class?"

The class snickered quietly.

Mme Bustier had become mean. Unbelievably so. Most things in her life have changed now, going from bad to worse. And Marinette had learnt to endure, she had no choice but to but now...

Marinette mumbles out an apology, rushing to her seat at the back of the class, purposely ignoring the stares thrown at her.

The Girl Behind The Mask

Week One Maribat March: "What if I don't Want to be a Magical girl?"

Ladybug sits on the top of the Eiffel Tower, thoughts all over the place.

Paris glittered below her like nothing had happened.

Another battle won. Another akuma purified.

Another piece of herself chipped away.

There was something about this particular fight left her disoriented and overly emotional. This was her fourth year stuck in this repetitive war with Hawkmoth. How much longer did she have to keep pushing? To keep fighting until she won this war?

  But Marinette, not Ladybug, felt more tired and defeated with each passing day.

But Marinette had a responsibility, the weight of the world on her shoulders and she couldn't afford to let it crumble. She couldn't let her deepest fears come to light, lest Hawkmoth uses it against her. 

She sighs heavily, trying not to reflect too deeply on her life. Trying not to remind herself how much life sucked for her these days. She remained on that tower, long after the sun had set.

Tomorrow, She had to be Marinette again. Tomorrow, she had to stay strong once again.

Getting back to the bakery felt like an hour on it's own though in reality it was five minutes. Still in a haze, she quickly detransforms and heads straight into the bathroom, hoping the hot water was what she needed to clear her head. 

These days the atmosphere in her room was always tense. She knew it, the kwamis knew it. There was something wrong with her, something she didn't even know. She didn't know how to act around Tikki. Seeing Tikki felt like confirming how messed up her life was. A reminder of how long she's been trapped in an emotion she can't even express freely.

Getting out of the shower, Marinette sits at her desk, trying to sort out her designs. She hadn't designed in months. She hadn't done anything to make her happy in months. She didn't know who she was turning into but she was gradually losing herself to the toxic environment around her.

She hesitates but picks up her pencil, maybe it was time to give drawing a shot again.

The sound of ripped pages filled her ears. Tears welled in her eyes, refusing to fall. She stared at the fashion journal she was gifted, ripped to shreds. Her heart thundered so loudly in her chest but she could do nothing but watch. Watch, as they grabbed her head and slammed it into a nearby locker. Endured as her school bag was emptied out, onto the floor and her supplies were crushed.  Felt, as she was gifted one slap after the other. Listened, as Tkki's quiet sobs reached her ears. Treated like dirt, like an outcast, for bullying Lila. Poor Lila. Maybe she really did deserve this.

Marinette flinched, dropping the pencil, could she really try to be herself again? She had long forgotten how to be herself.

“Marinette.” Tikki’s voice cut through the noise.

Quiet, but oddly clear. 

“Marinette. Look at me.”

The hallway had disappeared.

The locker. The laughter. The sting across her cheek.

Gone.

She was back, in her own room. She wasn’t stuck with them.

Her heart was beating so fast it was abnormal. Tikki hovered in front of her face, tiny hands pressing against her cheek.

“You’re here,” Tikki said softly. “You’re safe.”

Marinette blinked. The tears she’d been holding back finally slipped down.

“I’m trying,” she whispered.

“I know,” Tikki replied.

“Tiks, I can’t, I can’t be Ladybug anymore. How can I save Paris if I can’t save myself? I’m lost, I’m tired” Marinette whimpers as she breaks down. “I can’t, no I doesn’t want to be Ladybug anymore,” Her fingers clutched the edge of the desk, nails digging into her skin as the sobs wreck her. 

“You’re allowed to be tired,” Tikki said softly. “You don’t have to be strong all the time. Not for Paris. Not for me. Not for anyone.”

Marinette shook her head, tears spilling freely now. “But… but if I’m not Ladybug… if I stop… what happens?”

Tikki tilted her head, earnest. “You’re still you. That’s the most important part. Being a hero doesn’t mean never hurting. It doesn’t mean never breaking. You are already strong…the strongest hero ive met, and that says a lot”

Marinette let herself lean into Tikki’s presence. Tikki, her biggest supporter. She knew Tikki was more than a Kwami to her. Tikki was her best friend. The weight in her chest loosened just a little. She sniffled, wiping at her cheeks.

“I don’t know if I can keep doing this,” she admitted, voice trembling. “I don’t know if I want to anymore.”

Tikki nodded, her heart aching for her guardian. Her friend. “Then we’ll figure it out… together. Step by step. You're not alone in this Mari, you've got me and I'll always be here.”

Marinette’s tears slowed, her body finally sagging with exhaustion. She rested her head on her arms, eyes fluttering shut. Tikki stayed close by, determined to ease her holder’s pain somehow. She pats Marinette’s head gently, once more. “Try and get some sleep,” she whispered. “You deserve the rest,”

Marinette slept, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she was truly safe.

Tikki hovered silently, her tiny heart full of sympathy and love, keeping watch over the girl who carried the weight of the world and letting her rest, even if just for a night.

Marinette was trying her best to be strong. 

Trying her best not to break down. 

She watched in despair as the headphone’s Jay got her as a gift, was thrown on the floor and crushed. 

“Why do you keep making problems for everyone?”

“Why can’t you just disappear already?”

“Not everything is about you, Marinette.”

“Just go and die already!”

Tears clouded her vision as she stumbled out of the classroom. She needed to breathe, needed to feel! And with that, she had transformed and disappeared through a portal. 

To Gotham.

A door slams open. He was gonna kill that Demon Spawn!!

Jason Todd freezes in the doorway of his apartment, helmet still tucked under one arm.

For half a second he doesnt move.

Because sitting on his living room floor was his favorite tiny Parisian disaster shaking like the world had just ended.

“Pix?”

Marinette looks up.

Her eyes are red, tears streaking down her cheeks.

And the moment she sees him, whatever fragile control she has left shatters completely.

“Jay—”

Her voice breaks.

That’s all it takes.

Jason’s helmet hits the floor with a dull thud as he crosses the room in two long strides. He drops to his knees in front of her.

“Hey. Hey, easy.” His voice is rough but careful as he crouches in front of her. “What the hell happened?” Marinette tries to speak but the words get tangled in another wave of crying.

Jason’s jaw tightens. His voice drops into something dark.

“Who do I need to kill?”

Seeing a03 centered blogs makes me happy and sad at the same time. I'm an a03 author and I have a lot of fics that have been in progress for years, but they were started before my chronic illnesses got bad enough that I struggle to do things like write my fanfics.

I've seen a few disappointed comments about my lack of writing and it really just...makes me want to cry tbh. Everytime I get the drive to finish one chapter, I get so excited, post it, and then have another health flare and can't do anything for 3-4 months. And I miss being able to write the way I want to. Its all running around in my head and I can't write it down.

I dunno, I guess I just needed someplace to write this down and also to remind people that a03 authors are human beings and a lot of people have different illnesses and such that might prevent them from being quick with writing, so please be patient with them as readers, we're doing our best.

also a reminder to all of us to be kinder to writers and artists. we are humans with our own lives and battles outside of ao3 — we use the site and our art/writing as our source of comfort, which means we create for ourselves first and foremost, in our own pace, on own own terms.

pressuring fanfic writers, whose works you read for free, into “hurrying up and getting something done” is not how fanfics and hobbies work. so you might actually end up taking from these writers the joy and love they have for writing by turning something they do for fun and comfort into “a task they have to do to please you”.

instead of asking them for updates, let them know you love their works and that you appreciate them as a person.

Huge shout out to all the people who read fics. Who actually take the time out of their busy days to open a fic and read it

Before I started writing in earnest, I did not understand how much writing was going to eat into my fic reading time. We joke about having too many tabs open, but I have a different problem: the amount of tabs I have open on new fics is way smaller than it used to be. My ao3 wrapped would be a sad affair. Unless I’ve subscribed to an author or come across something on my dash, I basically don’t see it

Which has really driven home for me how much fandom cannot just be creators. You have to have people who want to read fic and meta discussions and joke posts. You have to have people who want to look at art and gifs. It has to be mutual.

Community thrives on flow. You have to have that movement of people sharing things with each other for a community to exist
