Do you ever think you'll stop drawing fanart? No offense it just seems like the kind of thing you're supposed to grow out of. I'm just curious what your plans/goals are since it isn't exactly an art form that people take seriously.
Ah, fanart. Also known as the art that girls make.
Sad, immature girls no one takes seriously. Girls who are taught that it’s shameful to be excited or passionate about anything, that it’s pathetic to gush about what attracts them, that it’s wrong to be a geek, that they should feel embarrassed about having a crush, that they’re not allowed to gaze or stare or wish or desire. Girls who need to grow out of it.
That’s the art you mean, right?
Because in my experience, when grown men make it, nobody calls it fanart. They just call it art. And everyone takes it very seriously.
It’s interesting though — the culture of shame surrounding adult women and fandom. Even within fandom it’s heavily internalized: unsurprisingly, mind, given that fandom is largely comprised by young girls and, unfortunately, our culture runs on ensuring young girls internalize *all* messages no matter how toxic. But here’s another way of thinking about it.
Sports is a fandom. It requires zealous attention to “seasons,” knowledge of details considered obscure to those not involved in that fandom, unbelievable amounts of merchandise, and even “fanfic” in the form of fantasy teams. But this is a masculine-coded fandom. And as such, it’s encouraged - built into our economy! Have you *seen* Dish network’s “ultimate fan” advertisements, which literally base selling of a product around the normalization of all consuming (male) obsession? Or the very existence of sports bars, built around the link between fans and community enjoyment and analysis. Sport fandom is so ingrained in our culture that major events are treated like holidays (my gym closes for the Super Bowl) — and can you imagine being laughed at for admitting you didn’t know the difference between Supernatural and The X Files the way you might if you admit you don’t know the rules of football vs baseball, or basketball?
“Fandom” is not childish but we live in a culture that commodified women’s time in such away that their hobbies have to be “frivolous,” because “mature” women’s interests are supposed to be marriage, family, and overall care taking: things that allow others to continue their own special interests, while leaving women without a space of their own.
So think about what you’re actually saying when you call someone “too old” for fandom. Because you’re suggesting they are “too old” for a consuming hobby, and I challenge you to answer — what do you think they should be doing instead?
#I love the fact I’m ‘weird’ for writing fic but some guy painting a team logo on his beer belly is normal

This whole modern approach is also seriously undermining just how important fanfiction is - from a historical standpoint.
The concept of fanfiction formed and forged the earliest stages of literature in Europe. Because the majority of authors in France, Germany and Great Britain looked at that funky little Celtic dude Arthur and thought “hey, he’s neat. I wanna write about him”.
The entire concept of a book outside of religious purposes was born out of fanfiction in my country.
There is no “first canon” for Arthur where he came as the prince of Camelot, with his sidekicks Lancelot and Merlin and his endgame love interest Gwen.
Arthur was some random hunter when he started out.
Someone’s fanfiction made him a prince.
Someone else’s fanfiction gave him a round table.
Someone else’s fanfiction gave him Merlin at his side.
Someone else’s fanfiction gave him Morgana, gave him Gwen, gave him his swords.
And, to this day, we still write Arthurian fanfiction. Literally last year there was a movie adaptation that is, by all intends and purposes, fanfiction, because it wasn’t even close to a literal adaptation of the source material (The Kid Who Would Be King). Heck, BBC’s Merlin, itself an Arthurian fanfiction, remains one of the biggest fandoms that people today write for on AO3.
You were a joke in the middle ages if you tried to write your own stuff. Who’s interested in your stuff? You were only a respected author if you wrote fanfiction. The most famous medieval German authors are famous because they wrote fanfiction about some knightly OCs they created who served on Arthur’s court. That is the literary legacy of the middle ages. Arthurian fanfiction.
Yet somewhere along the way, this concept of “I find x story/element cool and want to elaborate on it more, shift the focus onto an aspect of this original source material” has gotten this “eh, it’s fanfiction” connotation and lost respect.
Even though this very concept is still being used - even outside of the actual medium of fanfiction - and it is still being used for the very same purpose it was used for in medieval times. Original movies often don’t get as much recognition as adaptations of existing source material that the audience is familiar with. People see a movie about a character they’re familiar with and seem more inclined to buy a ticket to see the 10th new interpretation of Batman or Superman or Snow White. How are these new interpretations of familiar source material that usually add to the lore, reinterpret characterizations and dynamics, any different from fanfiction?
But heaven forbid we call The Dark Knight Nolan’s Batman fanfiction. No, fanfiction is that silly thing that we can’t take seriously, but that new Joker movie, that however is high-end art.
SO IMPORTANT
This. Fanfiction is variations on an existing theme, simultaneously making use of and satisfying people’s existing love for a story that they’re happy to consume more of, and cultivating the synergy between an existing story/mythos and a new author who, in interacting with characters they’d never have created themselves, creates something that neither they nor any of the story’s previous tellers could have made all by themselves.
Fanfiction is the new whole being greater than the sum of its parts, and fanfiction is the story being made limitless, retelling by retelling, and it is wonderful.
It’s also worth noting that Batman himself only came into being because of The Scarlet Pimpernel, a series of books about an extravagantly rich foppish playboy by day, daring hero in disguise by night (I mean, loosely. He also fopped by night and heroed by day, but you get my drift). Written by a woman no less.
Batman is a transformative work with a modernised crime-fighting SP but also borrowing strongly from earlier comic books, and yet it is seen as definitive.
Coming back here to say that I think the derision for fanart also has some of its roots in our capitalist hellscape.
It’s the age old “If thing not make you money, why you care about thing?” that’s so prevalent in the system. Of course some people do make money with their fanart, but I think that is still part of the scorn.
It’s supposed to be something you do not just for fun, but for practice, people like this think. Once you’re good at it, you can drop it and make money by focusing on your OCs and original work!
**smashes reblog**
Couldn’t agree more. Fan art and fic are absolutely valid. We really need to stop putting an age limit on fun as well!
Funnily enough, my Mum sent me this just today. It was in the front of the Doctor Who book she’d just purchased. (My Mum’s in her 70btw… tell her she’s too old for fandom, I dare you…)
Fandom, fanart, and fanfiction is for everyone. No, it isn’t something you “have” to grow out of. If it brings you joy, then who cares?
Always reblog
Right let people enjoy it if it brings them joy
Then who cares let them do what they want
Mammals both produce milk and have hair. Ergo, a coconut is a mammal.
I know you’re being facetious, but this is an actual issue with morphology-based phylogeny.
*leans over and whispers to person beside me* what are they talking about
*leans over and whispers back* Human ability to quantify and categorize natural phenomena is sketchy at best and wildly misleading at worst
consider the coconut
this reminds me of that time Plato defined humans as “featherless bipeds” and Diogenes ran in with a plucked chicken screaming “BEHOLD A MAN!”
i love how you say “it reminds me of that time” like you were there.
listen if an immortal feels brave and supported enough to come out we should respect them

Zeus: *hits joint* okay so like. It’s gonna have a duck bill right. But an otter body okay? And then a beaver tail. It’s a mammal. But. It lays eggs!
Hades: wait wait dude. Give it. Give it poison. Make it poisonous
Athena: You mean venomous, and make sure the eggs have both reptile and bird traits. Hermes: *takes the joint* Give it extra senses. Poseidon: It should be aquatic.
I MEAN where’s the lie
Demeter: … And where exactly do you expect me to put this? Everyone: Australia.

FTGO! Ch 99 teaser
Natsu flushed the toilet, eyes watering as he picked himself up. He had to stop throwing up. It was getting to the point that he couldn’t keep anything down, guilt and shame plaguing him.
But he had no one to blame but himself. He had chosen to keep what happened on that college tour a secret, and it was weighing him down, every day getting harder than the last.
Avoiding Lucy for the first few weeks had made his guilt lessen, but upon hearing how much that hurt her, he had to show her he cared about her, still wanted to spend time with her.
And he did.
He truly wanted to be by her side, to share in laughs and fun and enjoy her company. He wanted her to be happy, which was why he thought keeping the truth from her was in her best interest, but it was only tearing Natsu apart, piece by ragged piece.
Natsu rinsed out his mouth before popping a mint in, hoping it would help with his breath. Washing his hands, he refused to look in the mirror, not wanting to see what he had become.
His green eyes, which had brightened since meeting Lucy, were dull. Dark circles hung underneath his eyes, Natsu unable to sleep properly, his anxiety over what he did keeping him awake at night.
His skin seemed paler lately. He wouldn’t have noticed if it hadn’t been pointed out to him a few times, making his confidence plummet the more people picked at his appearance.
‘I can’t keep doing this. She doesn’t deserve this,’ he thought, splashing water on his face, cringing when he remembered he was wearing a bandage. He pulled it off, frowning when he felt the stickiness left on his cheek.
Natsu groaned before digging in his backpack, searching for a new bandage, only to realize with horror that he had run out. His face dropped and stomach twisted as he looked again, unable to find anything he could use.
'Damn it!’
Natsu tried putting the wet, used bandage back on, but it wouldn’t stick all the way, peeling off whenever he let go. He panicked, heart racing as his mind ran through options, but most of them involved going home.
However, that wasn’t an option.
He couldn’t blow off Lucy, not after promising to make more of an effort in their relationship. She had smiled so much when she reminded him about the game tonight, even if neither of them were huge sports fan.
She wanted quality time together, and he couldn’t let her down.
He had already done enough damage, he couldn’t risk blowing her off just because he couldn’t find a bandage.
'Porlyusica!’

she was drunk. she had a headache that hurt like a bitch and was completely, totally drunk in the back of natsu's worn down truck.
"you good, luce?" natsu's concern sounded genuine despite his earlier distaste for a drunk lucy. he never liked her drunk, she turns into a sobbing mess and he hates seeing her sad.
"m'fine natsu." she really wasn't fine, not in the slightest. the concern in her best friends voice made her want to cry.
god, she was so in love with him.
for three whole years she'd been in love with him. she kept that secret locked tight in her heart all because she didn't want to lose him, didn't want to lose the friendship they built.
there were moments though, when she was so close to confessing, but things always got in the way (flashes of her fathers death and natsu finding his biological parents burned through her mind) so lucy figured she wasn't meant to tell him, was cursed to an unrequited love for the rest of her life.
as the tears welled up in her eyes for third time since they've left the bar, natsu pulled into her apartment complex. lucy saw him frown at her tears when he opened the back door to get her.
"c'mon luce, let's get you inside"
"natsu, you're frowning! are you okay?" her words slurred and stuttered as she took natsu's outreached hand and hopped out of the car, leaning into his side.
"you're the one crying like a baby, and you're asking if i'm okay?" natsu grumbled and reached into his pocket for the spare key he had attached to his lanyard. "you're somethin' else, luce."
once natsu opened the door to her apartment, lucy detached from his arm and stumbled to the couch. following her, natsu took off her heels and lifted her legs to lay on his lap as he sat down with her.
the gesture made lucy hiccup with happiness. tears poured down her eyes, unable to control them from falling once again.
he was just so damn nice to her. so loving and caring and everything that she wanted, but was just out of her reach. she wanted more of him. more than this platonic love that she new she would never obtain.
"h-hey! what're ya crying for now?!"
"it's..it's just...you're so good to me! and it's hard to not be so fucking in love with you when you're this amazing! you are the best person i know, natsu. you're always there for me. you have been for five years! and i know this is probably the last thing you want to hear from your best friend. i know you don't see me like that, but god natsu you drive me crazy!and for the last three years i've kept it bottled up, but i don't want to keep secrets anymore! so for whatever it's worth, i'm so uncontrollably in love with you."
after she'd completely opened her heart out to natsu, she finally took a moment to look at him. his mouth was slightly open, eyes widened, and eyebrows raised in shock. his eyes locked with hers and she recoiled, scared of the rejection that was sure to come.
natsu grabbed her by the hand and pulled her up so close that they're noses brushed againsnt each other and instead of a rejection leaving his lips, he grinned.
"how could i not be in love with you too, luce?"
~
he looks up grinning like a devil!
"Okay, where do we bury him?"
I really admire Sensei's humor sense.
You can't to not to laugh at scenes like these.
OKAY TELL ME HOW THIS SOUNDS
Lucy was upset, frustrated, truly on the edge of a mental breakdown. She had had enough of her father’s rules and her role as the heir to her father’s company.
Why else would she be running down the financial district in a party dress? Only those who were truly fed up would do such a thing. She was barely eighteen and her father was introducing her to a marriage candidate? At a party for Mavis’ sake?! So many people had overheard!
“No! How dare…! Father! I—I can’t even imagine…! Screw that!” She had finally cracked, thrown her drink and stormed out of the hotel on high heels. “I’m not marrying anyone!”
It was completely unlike her to have made a scene in front of his colleagues like that, but fuck it. She wasn’t going to be that obedient daddy’s girl any longer.
The stress of her situation became adrenaline as she continued to run, tossing her heels and refusing to stop. She didn’t know where she was going, but it felt like nothing could stop her now.
“Taichou?” That caught her attention. Her ragged breath began to slow as she halted, her eyes caught by the stare of an onyx pair.
“Oh...hey, Natsu,” He stood against a storefront beside an alleyway, one foot kicked up on the wall, one hand holding his phone. He was in front of his family’s bar, but everyone knew that it was the front for the mafia. His father ran one of the largest groups in the area, but despite that, Natsu was a good kid. Unless you pissed him the hell off.
He had piercings, tattoos even. His black hair was dyed pink and he always wore a leather jacket outside of school.
“Where the hell are your shoes?” He snickered, shoving his phone into his pocket.
“Oh, I don’t really know,” She shrugged. “I tossed them a while back, they’re not really made for running.”
“You’re not being chased, are ya?” He stood up straight and approached her, calculating eyes staring down the street she came from.
“No, no, nothing like that,” She shook her head. “My, um, my dad kind of...pissed me off, so I was running from a party.”
“Makes sense,” He said, staring down the black cocktail dress she wore. “But I didn’t think you were the type to get pissed off.”
“Not usually...he pushed me too far,” Her lips twisted into a frown. “Geez, I’ll have to see him when I get home...fuck,”
“You can curse?” He laughed loudly with a split grin. “I thought you were too straight-laced to say stuff like that!”
“Well, not anymore...I’m tired of being some stupid, straight-A, follow the rules kinda girl,” She huffed, crossing her arms.
“Then I can hide ya for a couple days,” He suggested. “Since you don’t want to go home,”
“You’d do that for me?” Her eyes twinkled and he laughed again.
“Yeah, ‘course, taichou. Stay right here, I’ll go get my bike,” He said, first taking off his jacket for her to put on.
Lucy watched as he jogged down the alleyway, returning with his motorcycle and an extra helmet.
“You’re gonna want to hold on tight, alright?” He said as she awkwardly positioned herself behind him. Lucy nodded and wrapped her arms securely around his torso before they took off.
She rested her head against his back, eyes watching the lights of the city go rapidly past them. Her body still thrummed with excitement, unable to still as she burned with furious rebellion. Doing new and out of character things was seriously awesome.
“Alright, here we are,” He said, pulling his bike to a stop in front of an amazingly huge apartment complex.
“This is where you live?” Lucy asked as he helped her off.
“Nah, just a place I use every so often,” He said, taking her hand in his as they entered the building. “My dad owns it, so I have a space he let me have. No one else comes here, so you can stay as long as you like.”
“Luckily I chose the week before spring break to run away from home,” She giggled as they entered the elevator.
“You wanna tell me why ya ran off? Though I don’t mind if you keep it a secret.”
“My dad introduced me to someone he wants me to consider marrying,” She groaned, pursing her lips and crossing her arms.
“...yikes…” Natsu let out a long whistle, shoving his hands in his pockets. “Is he old?”
“At least thirty,” She shivered. “I pretty much told him to go screw himself before I took off.”
“I’m really likin’ this side of ya,” Natsu snickered as they stopped on his floor, the pinkette leading her to his door.
“I should have decided to be more rebellious sooner,” She sighed as they stepped foot into his place. “I feel like I could have been having a lot more fun,”
“What kinda fun?” He asked, Lucy’s eyes looking over the luxurious apartment.
“I dunno, going out with my friends instead of studying, normal teenage things,” She shrugged. “This is a really nice place,”
“Thanks,” He chuckled. “C’mon, I’ll give ya some clothes, you go ahead and take a shower. I’ll make some tea to warm ya up, yeah?”
“Sure, that sounds nice.” She nodded with a smile.
Standing in Natsu’s shower, Lucy was surprised to see that he had feminine soap next to his own, as well as shampoo and conditioner.
“Oh yeah...I forgot Cana mentioned he sleeps around,” She hummed to herself, rubbing the peach and white tea scented soap against her scalp. “I guess this is where he entertains.”
Finishing up with her quick routine, Lucy stepped out in a fluffy white towel to look at what she had been given to wear.
It was one of his t-shirts, long enough to reach her knees, and a pair of lace panties she assumed belonged to someone else.
“Do you usually keep the underwear from whoever you sleep with?” Lucy asked as she walked back into the living room, scrunching her hair dry with the towel.
“They seem too expensive to toss out,” He said, pouring her a cup of tea as she sat down. “It works out both ways, I have clothes for guests, and it pisses off the clingy ones,”
“I see,” She said with a light laugh, taking a sip from her cup.
“Why? You interested in who I sleep with?” He asked with a smirk, leaning back against the opposite couch as he drank his own tea.
“Not really, I never thought about it until now,” She hummed, setting down her cup to brush her hair with out with the comb she brought out with her.
“You’re a real interestin’ girl, taichou,”
“We’re not at school, you can call me by my name,”
“How about Luce? I like givin’ out nicknames,”
“Sure, I like the sound of that,” She nodded, his smile contagiously pulling her lips wide.
It was silent for the next few moments, both idly sipping their tea, Natsu watching Lucy as she brushed out her hair.
“Is it too weird if I ask you to sleep with me?” Lucy said suddenly, making Natsu choke a bit on his tea.
“Uh, not weird, more like surprising,” He coughed to clear his throat. “I didn’t think you were the type to want a one-night stand,”
“I just want to do something fun,” She sighed, letting the comb run slowly through her hair. “I’m tired of doing what people expect from me,”
“I’m fine with being a part of your rebellious phase,” He complied, standing up from the couch. “But I have rules,”
“I’m not clingy,” She rolled her eyes with a scoff. “If that’s what you’re worried about,”
“Nah, it’s cuz we go to school together. The clingy ones work for my dad.” He snickered, taking her hand and leading her towards his bedroom. “Ya can flirt with me at school if ya want, but I don’t date,”
“Do you assume that every girl who sleeps with you wants to date you?” Lucy asked with a snort in her voice as he closed the door behind them.
“‘Course I do,” He snorted as well, shaking his head. “You’ll get it once we do it, Luce.”
“That’s pretty cocky of you to say.” Her pulse became quickened as he led her onto his mattress. “How do you know that you won’t want to date me afterwards?”
“If I do,” He said, kissing her cheek as he climbed onto the bed with her. “It’ll be because I decided to keep ya,”
“Girls aren’t pets, Natsu,” Lucy said, beginning to pant as he gingerly kissed the column of her neck.
“Yeah they are, the good ones at least,” He said as he experimentally dragged his tongue against her skin, delighted by the moan she let slip. “Are you a good girl, Luce?”
“Not tonight,” She panted as their eyes met under the moonlight threading in from the window that replaced the east wall.
“Fuck, that’s kinda sexy,” He mumbled, capturing her lips with his. She wasn’t inexperienced like he thought she would be, her kisses matching his fervor and blending well against them.

For the NaLu fandom
The general perception of the anti-NaLu fandom is that we’re all rabid fans who feel threatened by Lisanna, NaLi and basically any ship that isn’t NaLu.
So to prove them wrong, I’m making this post. Reblog if you’re a NaLu shipper, but you like/love Lisanna and have stayed in your lane and have never sent hate mail anonymously or otherwise. Come on guys, we can do this!

This story is officially three years old :) Wish I had a chapter to post but covid 19 has me working extra hours and I have no energy to put into writing at the moment, but I'm grateful for all the support I've gotten for this story. I absolutely love zombie stories and I'm glad I decided to write one with my favorite characters. Thank you to those who are sticking with it and me! I appreciate you taking time out of your life to read what's been stuck in my head <3

My ideal summer evening is sitting and reading book in front of an open window, sipping from a warm mug of peppermint tea, and feeling the chilly evening breeze that brings in the night and escorts the day to another land.
