YES i’m a postgrad statistics researcher and i can tell you that the state honestly has NO IDEA what to do with the data it collects, it has an obsession with big data but it’s almost impossible to work with in practice. the traditional statistical approaches that are used can’t be scaled up, the adapted approaches are substantially weakened, and the machine learning approaches have the same problems and often tell them nothing. data scientists are only just coming around to these issues too, most still just push on with it anyway - incompetence is the word. above all this though, like you say, the biggest issue for the state is at the point of data collection. they will NEVER get anything useful if they’re collecting shitty messy data. they will eventually figure out that the real solution is working how to collect accurate and meaningful data, we should make it as difficult as possible for them to do that

TrackMeNot automatically does randomly generated searches on a variety of search engines to obscure your real searches and fuck with analytics, and you can set it up to work with anything that has a search bar (including facebook, twitter, amazon, youtube, etc)

WhatCampaign replaces analytics parameters in links with the string “FuckOff”. I thought there was a similar extension that used random strings, but I can’t seem to find it

Privacy Possum is a fork of Privacy Badger with a focus on costing tracking companies as much money as possible, and idk if my limited tech knowledge is enough to understand what it does but the description does say it falsifies some data so that’s good enough for me

So it turns out the windows 11 'shut down' button no longer shuts down the computer entirely. I know this because task manager snitched on the runtime. So I shut it down and turn the main switch off and guess what happened on the next boot. American Megatrends. How the hell does windows 11 even manage to fuck up shutting down

For anyone who has any modern Windows PC: This has actually been broken since Windows 7! Maybe 8, I don't remember, I just remember being the exact same level of horrified as OP when I finally noticed an 'up time' of like three hundred some odd hours on my old PC despite it having been shut off regularly. Anyway.

The usual culprit of Windows not "fully" shutting down is "Fast Start Up" being turned on (which was and is "on" by default, because it does help a slow computer or a computer with a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) start up faster). Anyone with a modern Windows PC running an SSD as your boot drive should turn this off. The computer not fully shutting down can lead to weird compounded errors. So please follow along!

Type "power options" into your search bar and click the result, should look like this:

Now we're going to back up to "Power Options" by clicking that in the upper bar or hitting "Cancel" on the bottom right. Now you should be here:

On the left hit "Choose what the power buttons do". Now you should be here:

Ignore the power button thing, but if your "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" is still on then turn it off! If yours is also greyed out make sure to hit that little blue thing with the shield near the top that says "Change settings that are currently unavailable" and then turn it off. Remember to hit "Save changes". Now your computer should fully shut off!

If you don't know how to check your "up time" to even know if this is a problem for you the easiest way to check is in the task manager. In the "performance" tab under your CPU at the bottom it will have an "Up time" like this:

(No comment on the SVM mode randomly disabling itself, it may or may not be related to this. I've never made use of and therefore never paid attention to mine and a lot of people aren't going to have it because that's AMD and while it's been more popular lately Intel is still really big out there. AMDs known to be quirky though (I say this as an AMD user) so who even knows what happened there.)

I know the post became memeing on windows but this can cause actual issues on modern hardware so figured I'd hijack in case it helps someone out. (It's something I have forgotten to check in the PCs I've helped friends make recently so I'm now having a "wuh oh" moment wondering if quirks one of them has been exhibiting is related to this.)

Okay but I get this. All of you worms who have things blocked on your wifi or whatever and have IbisPaint this is how you do it

Open IbisPaint go to a canvas (any canvas, or make. a new one)

Select the font tool (if you don’t know what or where that is, press the tool icon (normally a paint brush or eraser) and press the T button

From there you should be able to create a text box (writing is not important…). Find the font button and add a new font. I can’t remember what it’s called but you’ll know when you see it

It’ll automatically search for you “free fonts.” Do not follow this. Your app is misdirecting you. Instead search up whatever it is you’re looking for in the search bar, and that should work

Knowledge should not be trapped behind bars, bend and break them until you can grasp it

hey, use winaero tweaker to permanently disable copilot reinstalling itself (there's a group policy editor method but this is quicker)

go to settings>privacy & security to disable recall (if your computer has an npu) (if this option goes away right click your start button and select "terminal (administrator)" or "powershell (administrator)" and then type in "dism /disable-feature /featurename:recall")

the shortcut to "office 365" that has a copilot icon is just a link to office.com which currently opens a copilot chat, you can uninstall that and it won't affect you being able to use office

speaking of office, if you're using a license you personally pay for a 365 product, you can "downgrade" your subscription to remove copilot. if you're using your school or work license on your personal device, be aware that the t&c might say that your school or work owns anything you're producing with that office license, and you should instead use openoffice, libreoffice, or let "massgrave" (google it) help you out with office

I do like this visual! I only have one lil addition. This will be controversial, but I'd make the argument that the Black Lives Matter Movement wasn't (unfortunately) effective enough to be considered "yellow" in league with its prior examples. I understand that it's meant to be defined as movements that pushed back against white supremacy, but imo it's still contained within the red of New Jim Crow. Ferguson and the Floyd protests in particular were yellow moments, but... not really a... Things didn't improve, is what I'm saying. They were in response to living under increasingly red conditions. There wasn't an upward swing the way people seem to think having a Black president, for example, meant. We've very much still been in the red all this time.
