Okay so like I’m sure we’ve heard of Hiccup being his mother’s son and loving it (having fun getting to know Valka after they meet in httyd 2 bc omg!! Mom likes dragons too!!!! She understands!!!!)

But I raise you Hiccup being his mother’s son and hating it. Wretched mirrors of each other. She is all he could have been under different circumstances and he is all she would have liked to be once upon a time. He hates her for abandoning him and he hates that he can kinda see why she did it.

media trope that makes me want to throw up and cry is when a character realises there's no way they're making it out of a situation in one piece. and in a single moment they accept it and turn to their distraught loved ones with The Smile. you know The Smile. sickening

Honestly I love it when a whumpee is found like...literally half dead. They might not have one big life threatening injury or illness, but there are so many little things wrong with them all at once that their body is completely exhausted and the people who find them cannot comprehend how they're even alive when everything in them is worn down so badly. I'm talking like...multiple broken bones, barely an inch of their body that isn't bruised or bleeding, and a rising fever on top of things. They're slipping in and out of consciousness because they simply can't tolerate the constant pain anymore, it's maybe not coming from a severe wound that needs immediate tending on its own, but it's everywhere and it won't stop and they're more tired than they've ever been in their life.

And then of course there's the aftercare; the whumpee finally passing out completely and waking up some time later wrapped warmly in blankets, so sore and stiff and heavily bandaged they can barely move...they weakly ask for water and someone - they have no idea who - brings it to them, and after drinking the only thing they have the strength to think before losing consciousness again is that they're alive, somehow.

the ‘kind character snapping’ trope has been co-opted by too many people who don’t understand it fundamentally. you can’t have your character actively think of themselves as that kind of person bc that makes it like bragging. ‘you wouldn’t like me when i’m angry 😡’ ’no more mister nice guy 😈’ ’demons run when a good man goes to war 👿’ ’honestly i scare myself sometimes 😰’ WROOOOOONG. those are all threats. first off a truly kind character should be humble and not even consider kindness a thing of theirs. and second off please. if they’re truly gentle they should be ashamed of the very thought of their own wrath and not like openly talk about it. yeah i bet they do scare themselves and others when they finally get pushed too far but like don’t have them say or consciously think that without shame… it should be like a tragic thing that happens to them against their will and not like an alter ego they’ve been gleefully looking for an excuse to slip into
