PPS, it is pretty much impossible to overstate how life-alteringly important this movie was to kids who didn’t conform to standard expectations of gender and sexuality, back in the day. Especially when back in the day was the mid-to-late 1980s, when the only queers you saw on TV were neutered AIDS tragedies, Bowie was playing straight, and even Elton John was married to a woman, and midnight showing of RHPS were pretty much the only place that felt like home. It was mental life raft for a lot of people.

Right now it’s at $23,932. Just so you guys know, one of the four officers involved in George Floyd’s death was released on a bail of $750,000 last week. It was a lot less than Chrystul’s bail, yet he got out within a very short time period. Meanwhile, Chrystul is still in prison after two years.

I hope you all don’t sleep on this post now that BLM isn’t trending as much. Let her be home while she awaits her trial.

It’s a huge mistake to imagine these schools are in any way separate or independent from government and state power, in fact ‘government schools’ is exactly what they are. And not just because they’re where the government goes to school and learns to govern - at taxpayer’s expense too. I mean that literally, the government pays for the children of diplomats and high ranking officers to attend the most expensive schools in Britain for free - millions of pounds per year....but that’s a drop in the ocean compared to the rest of the money they get.

Their tax exempt status and various tax breaks amount to a government handout of 2.5 billion pounds per year, and they get hundreds of millions of pounds in state subsidies on top of that. In return they provide 6.5% (that’s all) of the UKs schoolchildren with the network and contacts they’ll need to maintain their place at the top of the class hierarchy, regardless of ability. 

At every level of state power, from the army to the judiciary to the civil service, the police, the media - no institution is more thoroughly and intimately integrated into their functioning than the private school system. They are literally synonymous with the establishment. The fact that parents also contribute to their funding makes no difference to this relationship - it makes more sense to think of them as a branch of the state, they’re a state department which predates most others, a product of centuries of co-evolution and mutual integration. They couldn’t function without the state and the state couldn’t function without them.
